Samuel Franklin Cody (known as S.F. Cody), was part Wild West performer, part dramatist, part cyclist, part aviator, and entirely a colorful character. Born Samuel Cowdery in 1861, by some accounts in Birdville, Texas, and others, Iowa, much of Cody’s life was spent cultivating a personal mythology and a fantastical origin story. Much of that mythology was centered on aligning his image with that of the famed William Frederick Cody, also known as Buffalo Bill; Samuel assumed both his surname (sometimes even calling himself Cody Jr.) and

his facial hair. Cody began his performing life with Adam Forepaugh’s Circus and Wild West Shows as a sharp shooter, cowboy, and pistol shot. By 1890, he had arrived in England with his first wife, Maud. For the first few years after their arrival, the couple performed trick shooting displays in music halls around Great Britain. By 1893, Cody had parted ways with Maud, and began a relationship with Elizabeth M. King, who became known as Lela M. Cody. Lela and her three sons, Edward, Leon, and Vivian joined Cody’s company and accompanied him on the remainder of his European tour. At this stage of his career, while touring England and continental Europe, Cody had branched out and was staging races between men on horseback and cyclists. In 1898, Cody debuted his first and most successful Wild West melodrama, entitled Klondyke Nugget. For at least five years the family toured all over Great Britain performing this play to very high acclaim. Klondyke Nugget was followed by Viva - A Woman at War, Nevada,
and Calamity Jane, but none reached the level of success of the original Cody melodrama. Around 1899, Cody began to experiment with kites. Members of his troupe were
involved in both the performance of plays and the creation of kites. By 1901, he was working on perfecting a man-lifting kite, known as the War Kite, which was subsequently used by the British military until the advent of the airplane rendered it outdated. In 1908, he began testing his powered airplane, the first of its kind in Great Britain, the British Army Aeroplane No. 1. The flight of this machine is recognized as the first official flight of a machine heavier than air in Great Britain. Cody continued to develop and improve his airplanes for the rest of his life, easily rising to the status of Britain’s most successful sporting pilot through his triumphs in many international flight competitions. On August 7, 1913, the plane that Cody was piloting with a companion broke apart midair, resulting in both passengers’ deaths. Over 50,000 people attended his funeral to help memorialize Britain’s most beloved aeronautical pioneer.
Description of Papers
This collection documents the activities of S.F. Cody, his family, and their performance company throughout their various ventures in Great Britain and continental Europe. The majority of the items document Cody’s production Klondyke Nugget and his ventures in cycle racing. Very few items document his aeronautical experimentation.
Performers named in this collection include, but may not be limited to: Samuel Franklin Cody, Lela Cody (also known as Elizabeth Mary King), Vivian Cody, Leon Cody, and Edward Cody (commonly referred to as Edward Leroy). Correspondents, when named, are included in the correspondence inventory.
The majority of materials in the collection are records of Cody’s business operations for his performance company, consisting of contracts, correspondence, accounting ledgers, receipts and invoices, and tickets. The collection also contains a large component of visual materials and printed advertising materials. These include posters, playbills, programs, clippings, and photographic materials. The photographic materials consist of cabinet cards, card photographs, and photographs in various sizes. Represented in these photographs are portraits of performers (in and out of costume), performance scenes, family and leisure activities, and landscapes of locations visited while on tour.
Archives Howard Tibbals’ Samuel Franklin Cody Papers
The collection represents a diverse geographic area, including all regions of Great Britain and much of continental Europe. The bulk of materials represent activities in England and France, with fewer materials representing Germany, Italy, and other European nations.
The collection is arranged as it was received. This collection was purchased by Jonathan King in 1996 and sold to Howard Tibbals in 1998. Jonathan King included a typed inventory with some identifications, dates, and locations for materials. There are gaps in the collection and not all materials included in original inventory sheets are present as assembled to date. Some materials were removed by Howard Tibbals before donation and may be included with other portions of the Tibbals Collection. There are items in the collection that do not have a King inventory number recorded on them. Jonathan King’s inventory sheets are divided by material type and numbered within each division. The material type groupings are rearranged in some places in order to accommodate for ease of the researcher and housing requirements, but items retain their original order within their groupings. Inventory lists may be viewed in Appendix 1.
Some materials have been cataloged and digitized in the Museum collections database, and are available online through the Ringling Collections portal (www.ringling.org/collections) Cataloged objects have been assigned an object number, and in this finding aid they are referred to by their object number.
