‘We are almost 50 per cent up on sales for 2016,’ says Daniel Prendergast, director atThe Rug Seller, an online company offering more than 20,000 rugs. John Lewis hasalso seen an increase.

‘Sheepskins seem to grow in popularity every winter as a quick additional layer ofsoftness,’ says Claire Jeffrey, rug buyer at John Lewis. (Try the grey sheepskin rug,180cm x 115cm, £175, johnlewis.com).

They aren’t just warming, they can transform a room, too. According to designerAnne Haimes, a rug can create a focal point, or be used to divide your home intoclearly defined areas. ‘If you have an open-plan kitchen-dining room, then a rug is agreat way of sectioning it off, ensuring the space doesn’t feel too functional,’ shesays.

So, what are the rules of the rug?

COLOUR CODED

Rugs are an ideal way of expressing your taste and individuality. There are thousandsof shades, patterns and materials from which to choose.

One basic rule, according to interior designer Pippa Jameson, is to avoid a rug thatmakes a room appear busy. ‘Go plain if the room is vibrant and colourful, or bold andbright if your room is decorated in neutrals,’ she says.

Silvers, greys and yellows have been very popular this year, according to Ben Dale, founder of Modern Rugs, an online rug retailer.

Art deco flair: The Persian Thistle rug by Genevieve Bennett for John Lewis is £295 in the sale

These delicate colours influenced designer Genevieve Bennett in her latestcollection for John Lewis (her Persian Thistle rug, 240cm x 170cm wool and viscose,is now £295 in the sale, johnlewis.com).

She was inspired by the Art Deco movement. ‘I love the stylised forms and patternsof the period,’ says Bennett.

A bold rug can work as a feature in its own right, according to Anne Haimes. ‘If youhave a large entrance hall, you could consider laying a gorgeous patterned rug, making an immediate style statement,’ she says. (Nima rug, 216cm x 165cm 100 percent wool, £685, perchandparrow.com).

KEEP IT CLEAN

Keeping carpets and rugs clean can become tiresome, especially if you have pets orchildren.Polypropylene is one answer, a hard-wearing synthetic fibre that can betreated to feel very soft; it’s washable and scrubbable, so perfect for kitchens orhigh-traffic areas.

Dash & Albert has a selection of polypropylene rugs, including the Indoor/OutdoorHappy Yellow Rug, in various sizes from £190 at cuckooland.com

according to Ben Dale.

‘The Nordic style seems to incorporate a lot of natural materials, so things likesheepskin, sisal, wool and jute are popular,’ he says.

Jute and sisal are hard-wearing and create a pared back Scandi look (Jute Soumakrugs, 160cm x 230cm, £249, modern-rugs.co.uk).

Wool has never lost its allure. ‘One of the qualities that makes wool so popular is itsability to “breathe”. It won’t be damaged by moisture or temperature changes,’ saysBeckie Carlisle, homeware buyer at Matalan Direct.

Breathable rugs such as the 100 per cent wool Kashba collection by Brink &Campman are flatweave without heavy backing, making them lightweight andreversible. They cost from £259 to £529 according to size, modernrugs.co.uk.

Cotton works well in children’s rooms because it’s easily washable and dries quickly.Habitat has some lovely bright rugs (Agnes bright stripe, 140cm x 200cm, £80,habitat.co.uk).

Bamboo is used to make rugs, too. It has a beautiful silky texture and a gentleluminous sheen. The Silk Shadows Collection by Nourison combines wool andbamboo (Silk Shadows Amethyst rug 25 per cent wool, 75 per cent bamboo silk,168cm x 226cm, £1,920, therugseller.co.uk).

FLOOR PLAN

A little rug floating in the middle of the room is a design disaster, according to BenDale, because it will make a room look smaller.

‘The trend is for large rugs where all four legs of a table or sofa are on the rug,’ saysAlan Russell, of Louis de Poortere, the carpet and rug specialist. (Fading WorldCollection Pink Flash rug, 230cm x 330cm, £845, louis depoortere.be).

The same holds true in the bedroom. A large rug with a clearly defined borderaround the bed will create a chic, symmetrical look.

Or for something different, you could hang a rug on the wall. The Royal Academy is
