At PBS Hawaii,
we are seeing an inspiring reci-procity between generations. We witness it every week as HIKI N -O teach-
ers, mentors and students freely share skills and sensibilities; we saw it at recent HIKI N -O theater screenings on four islands, as prom-inent business leaders and industry professionals showed up to talk
with students and support schools’ expertise in storytelling; and we enjoyed it during last month’s Na Mele Moments pledge-of-support drive, with a theme of looking to the past to navigate our future. During the Na Mele Moments program, 88-year-old Princess Abigail Kinoiki Kekaulike Kaw -ananakoa spontaneously called in to say how touched she was by
both the archival music clips and by young people playing music in “the real old style.” Children, grand-children and a great-grandchild of late, great Hawaiian musical artists Genoa Keawe and Dennis Kamakahi perpetuate their loved ones’ music while being true to themselves. P -omaika‘i Lyman, Aunty Genoa’s granddaughter, marvels that by example, Tutu set the bar high in many ways – starting with that almost impossibly long note in her

signature song, “Alika,” something the family matriarch could do until late in her long life. Meanwhile, a big, active ohana kept Aunty Genoa engaged and exposed to new ways. Our Board of Directors, who staffed the phone bank during Na Mele Moments, has multiple gen-erations represented – with a significant number of
younger members than ever before. The Directors, from differ-ent islands and different backgrounds, may have differing perspectives – but they agree on core values, and the need to respect each other and work together. They have a synergy that works. This baby boomer
from the days of the “generation gap” believes society benefits from intergenerational connecting and bond-ing, and I love seeing it happen close at hand.

Bottom: Local film industry professionals, including State Film Commissioner Donne Dawson, interacted with budding storytellers at our HIKI N -O Festival event at Consolidated Ward Stadium 16 in Honolulu.
Family members from different generations were proud to support their children’s storytelling work, like the family of Kamehameha Schools Maui
student Jaylyn Nobriga (pictured, left). They attended the HIKI N -O Festival screening at Consolidated Kaahumanu 6 in Kahului last month.

a horrifying era in Indonesian history and provides a window into modern Indonesia, where corruption reigns. Not only is the 1965 murder of an estimated one million people honored as a patriotic act, but the killers remain in power. In a mind-bending twist, death-squad leaders dramatize their brutal deeds in the style of the American westerns, musicals and gangster movies they love – and play both themselves and their victims. As their heroic facade crumbles, they come to question what they’ve done.

PBS Hawaii: How crucial was your visit to the W.M. Keck Observatory?
STEVEN JOHNSON: The visit to Keck is one of the central sequences in the Glass episode, and in fact it’s one of my favorite sequences in the whole series. We wanted to show how far we had extended our vision into space – and back in time – thanks to the technologies of glass, and Keck is the perfect site to showcase that progress.
PBSH: What were your first impressions of the Mauna Kea site?
SJ: It really looks like you are on another planet: the lack of vegetation, the red rocks, the altitude so high above the cloud layer. My first thought is that it’s appropriate that this is the best place on Earth to gaze into other
worlds – it actually looks like it belongs to another world!
PBSH: Were there any challenges while shooting the Mauna Kea segment?
SJ: You’re always battling the altitude there; we had one crew member who had to go on oxy-gen, and didn’t make it back up to the summit for the second day of shooting. When I watch the sequences now, I can see how out of breath I am. It was literally breathtaking up there.
PBSH: What is one takeaway you’d like viewers to get from How We Got To Now?
SJ: I think it’s a sense of opti-mism about how much progress we’ve made solving important problems over the last few cen-turies, and learning about our place in the universe – thanks to innovations like the telescope.
Best-selling author Steven Johnson hosts How We Got to Now, a new series premiering on PBS Hawaii Wednesday, October 15 at 9:00 pm. The series features stories behind remarkable ideas
that make modern life possible, the unsung heroes behind these ideas and the unexpected and bizarre consequences each of these innova-tions triggered.
On the episode Glass, which airs Wednesday, October 22 at 10:00 pm, Johnson visits the W.M. Keck Observatory on Mauna Kea’s summit to showcase what he calls the “pinnacle of the extension of human vision” – the world’s largest pair of optical telescopes, giving astronomers a window into outer space.

Mark Dunkerley Mark Dunkerley is most happy when he’s flying an airplane – upside down. The Hawaiian Airlines President and CEO grew up with aviation fuel in his blood, flying unaccompanied between boarding school in London and his parent’s home in Washington D.C., and eventually earned a degree in Air Transport Economics. And his passion for flying upside down? That kicks in when Dunkerley is piloting his personal aerobatic aircraft.

INSIGHTS ON PBS HAWAII: ELECTION 2014 Insights on PBS Hawaii host Mahealani Richardson remembers sitting at the Insights table with Governor Neil Abercrombie and his challenger, Senator David Ige: “We and the public had never seen them together beyond sound-bites on tele-vision, and we got a sense of who they are and where they stand on the issues in comparison to each other.” That face-to-face meet-ing of the two leading Democratic candidates for Governor was the very first televised meeting between Governor Abercrombie and Senator Ige. It was just one of 21 hours of live candidate discussions and election analysis that Insights on PBS Hawaii is bringing to Hawaii’s electorate during Election 2014. Host Daryl Huff observes that Insights “gives the viewers the opportunity to see first hand, live, the ability of candidates to express themselves and handle the stress of a live format that is not available anywhere else.” Host Malia Mattoch says of the candidates invited to the Insights table: “They’re asked everything from what’s in the headlines to a question from a constituent that is unexpected and sometimes quite illuminating.” During the month of October, Insights on PBS Hawaii will continue covering Election 2014, with a discussion between U.S. House candidates Charles Djou and Mark Takai, Kauai mayoral candidates Dustin Barca and Bernard Carvalho, as well as candidates from other lesser-known races around the State. Insights on PBS Hawaii airs live Thursdays at 8:00 pm and encores Sundays at 2:00 pm.

Outbreak In the summer of 1950, the people of Korea trapped between two new superpow-ers of the postwar world flexing their muscles – the United States and the Soviet Union. On June 25, 1950, the North Korean People’s Army invades the South. For the next 12 months, the opposing forces of North and South march up and down the Korean peninsula in a series of attacks and counterattacks until cease-fire negotiations begin on July 10, 1951. But the negotiations do not bring an end to the conflict, and the war drags on for another two years.
10:15 KOREA: THE FORGOTTEN WAR IN COLOUR Stalemate While diplomats wrangle and negotiators argue, the fighting in the blighted Korean countryside continues. Stories emerge of atrocities committed by both sides. Amid allegations of retribution and reprisals, one of the major issues at the negotiations is the repatriation of prisoners of war. Eventually, the prisoner issue is resolved and a ceasefire is declared on July 27, 1953. After three years of war, with the country destroyed and at the cost of millions of lives, a divided nation returns to the status quo of 1950.

For over 34 years, First Hawaiian Bank has been a supporter of PBS Hawaii programming and currently sponsors Leahey & Leahey and Insights on PBS Hawaii. Jeff Higashi, Senior Vice President
and Area Manager, explains why it is important for First Hawaiian Bank to support locally produced programs. “As a large institution, we wanted to dem-
onstrate that First Hawaiian Bank is still first and foremost a community bank,” Jeff says. “Local programs engage, inform and create discussion on issues that matter to the Islands. We care about the uniqueness that is Hawaii and by supporting local productions, we’ve created a better connection to the community we serve.”
As a longtime viewer, Jeff recalls fond memo-ries of growing up on PBS Kids programs, an experience that many employees share. “Almost
all of us have a connection to PBS Hawaii,” Jeff says. “We see our kids watching the same programs we grew up on, and as employees, it’s great to see our organization share and support the same values that we do.” Mahalo a nui loa to First Hawaiian Bank for your business support. If you or your business would like to become a PBS Hawaii community partner, contact Tatsu Sasaki at [email protected] or please call (808) 973-1990.

PBS Hawaii’s Recent 90-minute Pledge Considered Most Successful
Individuals, businesses and labor unions invested $55,100 to help build a new facility along Nimitz Highway near Sand Island. With our lease in Manoa expiring, we now have more than $23 million toward our goal of $30 million. Led by Robbie Alm, our Board of Directors staffed the phone bank during the Na Mele Moments presentation last month. Three $5,000 gifts came from the Hawaii Government Employees Association, Univer-sity of Hawaii Professional Assembly and Lanai Resorts LLC. Aloha Petroleum gave $10,000. Besides these four gifts, the average individual contribution was $230! Donations came from throughout the state. Former Board Chair Neil Hannahs and other former Board members made contributions. And Princess Abigail Kinoiki Kekaulike Kaw -ananakoa phoned in and said, “I am profoundly touched by all of the aloha.” So are we. Mahalo a nui loa.
