How to use this Bible study tool:

Ask it — Parents or children can hide God’s word in their hearts by rotating back and forth to ask these important questions about God and His Word. These include many of the questions of the Christian life. All will benefit from asking them.

Answer it — As we memorize the answers, God’s word is planted in our hearts. Memorization begins by thinking about the question and giving our best answer. However, as the individual aligns themselves with God’s Word, “Our best answer” changes to become “His only answer.” Children from the youngest age to the most educated of adults will benefit from learning clear and concise answers to these questions.

Prove it! — The Bible is the complete Word of God. The sixty-six books, as originally written, comprising the Old and New Testaments, were inspired by the Spirit of God and were entirely free from error. The Bible is the final authority in all matters of faith and practice and the true basis of Christian union. We prove what we believe when we find it in God’s Word. You can have races to these passages. You can take turns reading. Children benefit when they hear dad and mom read the Word of God aloud. They benefit when they read the Bible out loud.

“What do you do with a man who’s a new believer?”

That's one of the most common questions my church faces when discussing our approach to equipping family shepherds. The common understanding seems to be that children can be discipled only by sophisticated programs led by persons having years of training. However, this is a far cry from the biblical and historical model.

As we noted earlier, the Bible is void of any patterns of instruction that would clearly point to the establishment of modern age–segregated ministries. Instead, what we see again and again is a pattern characterized by the wisdom of Proverbs: “My son give me your heart, and let your eyes observe my ways” (Prov. 23:26).

But it's legitimate to ask what this pattern should look like if the family Shepherd knows little of God’s ways. Enter catechism.

In his memoirs, Jonathan Edwards encouraged heads of households… “to revive… the ancient good practice of catechizing.” This practice, though foreign 2

to many contemporary minds, is an old and trusted family discipleship tool. And while no catechism, creed, or confession is infallible or rises to the level of scripture, it's important to have tools to define and teach the doctrines we derive from the Bible.

This is especially important since the very benefits catechism provides are needed by a spiritually immature father as well as by his children.

14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.
