HOW TO USE THE VARELA FAMILY TREE WEB SITE

The web site is located at npcnt.net/VFamTree/Tree/wc_toc.html. You will be asked for a Username and Password. If I haven't already given you these, email me at [email protected].

Warning: the site may be slow to open thelog-in dialog and even present a “NotFound” error. If that happens, try again. Ifit persists, email me.

Upon opening the site, you will bepresented with the Introduction page, with a1971 picture of the author and his family. NOTE: This describes the Web site'sappearance on a desktop or laptopcomputer. Pages on a tablet differ slightly. On a tablet, access the INDEX link bytapping the icon with three horizontal barsat upper right, and then, wherever itappears, for “click” read “touch”.

Now, at the very top of the page CLICK ON (oron a tablet pull down the menu and TOUCH) “Index”.

On the page that opens, up at the top click on the letter V. Then scroll down to VARELA and my name,“John Anthony (19 Sep 1935 - )”. Click on (or touch) it.

This opens the Family Card for me. It shows my spouse and our children, and our parents, with name, dates, and some other information.

Now click on my name. The resulting presentation is called a Person Sheet. This sheet repeats the Family Sheet, adding any Notes listed for the subject Person, Spouse, and Marriage.

If you were to return to the Index and click on your own name (if you are listed in this tree) you would come up with a similar presentation for yourself. Your presentation would probably lack some of the detailed information that is in mine, but you could rectify that by providing me with that information.

From either the Family Card or the Person Sheet one can travel around the family tree by clicking on spouses, parents, or children, but that's the hard way, as we shall see.

For now, click on my mother, Helene Henrietta Roehl. You are now looking at her Person Sheet. Scroll down the page to find a series of Notes regarding her, her husband and, way down at the bottom, their marriage and family.

Over 100 such Notes are scattered throughout the family tree. With only a couple of exceptions, there are no Notes for living people. Notes may contain short biographies of individuals, quotations from historical documents, stories

from family lore, and explanations of sources. (I have not always been good about recording the sources of my information.) Many of the notes are short one-liners, with remarks such as “Buried in theRoehl tomb in Greenwood Cemetery”. The Family (or Marriage) Notes contain items that relate to the marriage or family as a whole and not to one individual.

Scroll back up to the top and click on Antonio María “Tony” Varela. This brings up his Person Sheet. It shows that he had two wives. The Notes for Tony, Helene, and their marriage are repeated, and a Note is added for the second wife. There is no Note for the second marriage because I haven't written one.

Scroll back to the top of the Person Sheet and clickon the tree icon next to Helene HenriettaRoehl's name. This brings up the Tree View.

A tablet held vertically will show only four levels of ancestry. Rotate it to see five.

The Tree View shows the selected Person's ancestors. Clicking on any Person in the view will bring up a new Tree View of that Person's ancestors. For example, click on Susan LEEK, in the bottom row. TheTree View shows at most five generations. If there are more, clicking on a box in the rightmost columnwill select that person and show their ancestors. Clicking on the leftmost (“root”) person will bring up that person's Family Card.

A white line at the bottom of a box in the Tree View gives the number of spouses and the number of children that person has, when that information is known. Clicking on the downward-pointing arrow will pull down a menu that lists the spouses and children. Clicking on one of those names will make

that person the root person for a tree display. By clicking on names in boxes and pulldowns one can navigate around the tree.

Using the browser's back arrow, return to Helene Roehl as the root (leftmost) person in the tree. Click on her name to return us to her FAMILY CARD, and then click on the camera icon next to her name. This brings up the photo and documents attached to her name. At the top of the page is a list list of items. Scroll down to the bottom to find the list of Related Media Pages. Click on “Antonio María VARELA & Helene Henrietta ROEHL”. This brings up the multimedia items related to their marriage. In this case there are a pair of photos that they exchanged before they were married, photos of the car and furniture they bought soon after they were married, and some documents. Scroll down to see them.

Click your browser's back arrow twice to return to Helene's Family Card. Click on the tree icon next to Antonio Varela's name. Now click on the name Martín VARANDA. He is now the root person. Click on his name again to bring up his Family Card. Click on his name again to bring up hisPerson Sheet. Scroll down and read the Note. I brought you here to demonstrate the sort of thing that are to be found in the Notes.

You could spend a lot of time poking around the tree seeking Notes. To make that easier, here is a list of all the Persons for whom there are Notes. Be aware that women are always listed with the surnames they had at birth. Don't forget that you can always go quickly to any Person by clicking on “Search”, “Index”, or “Surnames” at the top of any page or touching the three-line icon at the top right on a tablet.

Where there is more than one spouse, the tree may branch. To help you trace the branches, a list of all the people with multiple marriages follows. Important branch points occur at August C. Wuerpel and at José Pedro de Gracia Varela. You can quickly reach the alternate branch by clicking on “Index” at the top of any page and then finding and clicking on the person's name.

Thus: From whatever page you are on, click on Index. At the top of the Index page, click on the letter W. Scroll to WUERPEL and click on August Charles Sr (~1849 – 1923). You are now looking at the Wuerpel-Almindinger Family Card. Click on the tree icon next to his name. The pulldown on his box lists his second wife, Emily Francis

That completes our tour of the family tree. You should now be able to navigate anywhere.

There is a lot of missing information in this tree. There is little or nothing about the ancestors of many spouses. I don't have photos of many of the people, even in the later generations. Where I do have photos, many are out of date. Any contributions to fill in the blanks will be appreciated. And if you don't like a photo I posted of you or yours, byall means send me a better one. I had to use what I could get.
