Soapnuts are the fruit grown on the Sapindus Mukorossi tree in the

Himalayas. The nuts are collected by trained local people who live

near those areas. The shells are then dried and cleaned, the seeds are removed and we are left with the

soapnut shells.

They work just like normal detergent does, except without the harmful chemicals!! The shells contain a natural cleaner called saponin (soap), which dissolves in water, forms suds and dissolves fats and oils to help lift grime. Soapnuts are naturally low-sudsing which makes this a perfect natural laundry detergent alternative for all washing machines including energy efficient machines.

Soapnuts for washing laundry

•Put 5-8 soapnut shells into wash bag and tie.

•Place bag in warm tap water for three minutes to soak.

•Place wash bag amongst clothes in your machine, wash as usual.

Washing Clothes

No softener is needed, but for fragrance you can add 10-15 drops of essential oil directly onto the wash bag.

Treating Stains

When washing: add 2 tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda and two tablespoons of white vinegar into the drawer of the washing machine

...oxygenated cleaning power! Alternatively add your own laundry boost or bleach.

DisposalThese are soapnuts after 3, 4 and 5 washes. When the

outside shell is very dark and inside is beige or grey

it’s time to compost or green bin them!

Soapnut Recipes

How to make soapnut liquid•Boil 50g of soapnuts in 1 litre of

water for 20 minutes. •When cool, poor into an airtight container (this should give you 500ml of soapnut liquid). •Return boiled soapnuts to pan and repeat steps above three times.

After doing this, you will have two litres of soapnut liquid from only 50g soapnuts!!

Wash Laundry with soapnut liquid

Use 100ml in a dosing ball in your drum, and wash clothes as directed…Awesome!!

Soapnut Recipes Continued...How to make soapnut

powderGrind down soapnut shells in a coffee grinder/ food processor until you have a fine powder. When finished, sieve powder into an airtight container or jar.

How to use soapnut powder...To wash your Laundry

Add 2 tablespoons of powder into a sock and knot it. Place in the drum amongst your

clothes and wash as usual. You can reuse this same batch of powder 3 times!!
