How to use an English Wheel?
English Wheel An English wheel is a simple, easy-to-use machinedesigned for sheet metal fabrication.
The machine is used to form different types of curvesin sheet metal.
Generally, the machine is manually operated.However, hydraulic drives can also be used onlarger machines.
Steps required to use an English Wheel:Choose the Die: Usually, an English wheel comes equipped with five or six different types
of anvil wheel dies. Choose the die according to the type of forming you wish to achieve with the sheet metal.
Attach the Die to the Frame: The lower jaw of the C frame has 2 carved grooves while the anvil wheel has bearings on either side. Place the die into the lower jaw by fitting the bearings into the grooves.
Adjust The Spacing Between The Wheels: Turn the handle under the lower jaw to adjust the space between the anvil wheel and the rolling wheel. The smaller the space, the more pressure that will be applied to the sheet metal.
Commence the Metal Forming Process: Pass the sheet metal through the space between the rolling wheel and the anvil wheel. Moving the sheet metal back and forth between the two dies will help form the sheet metal. The metal part can be moved in any direction.
Remove the Sheet Metal after Completion: Many English wheels are equipped with a lever just under the anvil wheel. The lever allows you to remove the sheet metal without making any changes to your settings.
Tips while using an English Wheel :Choose the roller depending on the amount of
curvature you want in the sheet metal.
For creating curved objects such as motorcycle tanks, you can use the English wheel to stretch only the center of the sheet metal while leaving the edges of the same thickness.
Always wear gloves when operating the English wheel.
