DATA PROTECTION ACT (1998)This law is about using personal details secure and safe , fairly and not disclosing it to the 3rd party

Any information (data) that’s held about you must be:

• fairly and lawfully processed

• processed for limited purposes

• adequate, relevant and not excessive

• accurate

• not kept longer than necessary

• processed in accordance with your rights

• kept secure

• not transferred abroad without adequate protection

COMPUTER MISUSE ACT (1990)

This law is about hacking into someone’s personal details, sending virus or using Facebook.

Example

• Accessing computer material without permission, e.g. looking at someone else's files.

• Accessing computer material without permission with intent to commit further criminal offences, e.g. hacking into the bank's computer and wanting to increase the amount in your account.

• Altering computer data without permission, e.g. writing a virus to destroy someone else's data, or actually changing the money in an account.

COPYRIGHT, DESIGNS AND PATENTS ACT 1988

This law is designed to prevent unauthorised copying of material without permission which could include: images, music, videos, movies.

When you buy software, for example, copyright law forbids you from:

•giving a copy to a friend•making a copy and then selling it•using the software on a network (unless the licence allows it)•renting the software without the permission of the copyright holder

HEALTH & SAFETY

This law is about preventing back pain, eye strain or wrist support by using chairs, desks and monitors

The law states that an employer must:

• provide tiltable screens

• provide anti-glare screen filters

• provide adjustable chairs

• provide foot supports

• make sure lighting is suitable

THREATS TO USER SAFETY • VIRUS ATTACK- VIRUSES OFTEN PERFORM SOME TYPE OF HARMFUL ACTIVITY ON INFECTED HOSTS, SUCH

AS STEALING HARD DISK SPACE OR CPU TIME, ACCESSING PRIVATE INFORMATION, CORRUPTING DATA.

• HACKING – E.G. YOU COULD LOSE ALL YOUR PERSONAL DETAILS LIKE YOUR BANK ACCOUNT DETAILS, CREDIT CARD DETAILS FROM GETTING HACKED.

• THEFT(CREDIT CARD DETAILS)- , E.G. LOOKING AT SOMEONE ELSE'S FILES OR PERSONAL INFORMATION WITHOUT PERMISSION.

• PHYSICAL INJURY FROM SPENDING LONG HOURS- E.G. EYE OR BACK ACHE

COMPUTER COULD BE RUINED, YOUR FILES DELETED, YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION STOLEN AND YOUR SOFTWARE CORRUPTED

• DO NOT OPEN ATTACHMENTS FROM UNKNOWN SOURCES

• USE APPROPRIATE CHAIRS AND DESK

• MINIMISE HOURS SPENT ONLINE-
