How to set up Thecus NAS as storage repositories on Citrix XenServer via iSCSI

Create an iSCSI Target on Thecus NAS

Please make sure that an iSCSI Target has been created on Thecus NAS and is ready for use.

Connect XenServer to the iSCSI Target

1. Right click your XenServer under XenCenter and select "New Storage Repository".

2. Select iSCSI under "Virtual disk storage" and click "Next"

3. Enter a name and path for the new iSCSI storage

a. Enter a name for the NAS (storage repository)

b. Enter the NAS IP

c. If you have enabled iSCSI CHAP authentication on the NAS, select the option "Use CHAP"

and enter the authentication information. if no, please skip this one and go next.

d. Click "Discover IQNs" to get the target list from NAS. XenServer will discover all the iSCSI

targets on the NAS.

4. The target list has been updated, select the target you want to use. Click "Discover LUNs" to

detect all the LUNs mapped to the target.

5. Select the LUN you want to use and click "Finish".

6. XenServer will scan the LUN. If the LUN is a new one, XenServer will propose to format the

LUN in order to use it as a storage repository. Click "Yes" to format the LUN. All the data will

be destroyed.

7. When the operation has completed, the storage repository will be shown.

8. Click the storage repository, the status and multipath information will be shown. Thecus NAS

supports MPIO and XenServer, if your NAS has more than one IP address, you can use this

feature by enabling "Multipathing". The number of active paths will be shown.

Multipath configuration on XenServer

There is no required operation on Thecus NAS. Multipathing is supported natively.

1. Right click your XenServer and select "Enter Maintenance Mode". Note that you may need to

shut down all the running virtual machines.

2. Click "Enter Maintenance Mode" and click "Close".

3. Right click your XenServer and select "Properties".

4. Under "Multipathing", select the option "Enable multipathing on this server".

5. Right click your XenServer and select "Exit Maintenance Mode".

Create a new VM on the new storage repository

1. Right click your XenServer.

2. Click "New VM"

3. Choose a template and click "Next". (Here example we use Windows Server 2003)

4. Enter a name for your VM and click "Next".

5. Select the media for the CD/DVD-ROM drive and click "Next".

6. Set the number of CPU and memory quantity and click "Next".

7. Select the pre-existing location for the virtual disk location, click "Edit".

8. Specify the size of the virtual hard drive. Select the location "Thecus iSCSI virtual disk storage"

and then click "OK".

9. The virtual disk on the NAS is shown and click "Next".

10. Set up your Virtual Interface Network and click "Finish". Windows Server 2003 will be installed

to new storage repository.
