How to obtain Vista Recovery Media and/or use the Vista Recovery Partition on yourcomputer to put it back to Factory Settings.

There is no legal free Vista download available.

Contact your Computer Manufacturer and ask them to send you a set of Vista Recovery disk/s.

They normally do that for a small $ cost.

Also, ask them if you have a Recovery Partition on your Computer/Laptop to restore it toFactory settings.

See if a Manual came with the computer, or go to the Manufacturer's website, email or phone

them for info on how to do a Recovery.

Normally, you would press F10 or F11 at Startup to commence the Recovery Process..

Another way I have seen on some models is to tap F8, and go to a list of Startup options, andstart a Factory Standards Recovery from in there, by selecting the Repair computer option.

Also ask them if it is possible to make Recovery Disk/s from the Recovery Partition in case of Hard Drive failure or System Crash.

They will tell you how to do that.

Each Computer Manufacturer has their own way of making Recovery Disk/s.

Or borrow a proper Microsoft Vista DVD(not Dell, HP, etc).

A proper Vista DVD contains all Vista versions.The Product Key determines which Vista version gets installed.

There are 2 Vista disks: one for 32bit Operating System, and one for 64bit Operating System.

If a clean install is required with a proper Vista DVD (not HP, Dell Recovery Disks):

Go into your Bios/Setup, or Boot Menu, at startup, and change the Boot Order to make theDVD/CD drive 1st in the Boot Order, then reboot with the disk in the Drive.

At startup/power on you should see at the bottom of the screen either F2 or DELETE, to go intoBios/Setup, or F12 for the Boot Menu

Even though using the Windows Add/Remove utility to uninstall the application is therecommended way for removing application files, linked libraries, and registry entries, there aretimes when applicati ons folders dont get removed automatically even after following the proper

3. Insert a blank unformatted CD or DVD into your CD/DVD drive and click on the Create disc button. If you booted from the USB drive to install Windows 7, then you may need to change the hard drive backto being listed before the USB key in the boot order in BIOS after the computer restarts duringinstallation to prevent the computer from booting right back into the USB key starting the installationprocess over and over.

In very little time this can be accomplished by even a novice, and in this tutorial I'm gonna show youhow. I have seperated this tutorial into 2 sections: Part 1 covers how to burn a bootable DVD and Part 2is on creating a bootable flash drive.

This is primarily going to be useful to XP and Vista users who do not have .iso burning software installedon their current HDD and wish to perform a clean install.

2) In step 2 of 4 you are given the choice of making a bootable DVD or a bootable USB flash. In this firstsection of my tutorial I show you how to burn a bootable DVD. So click DVD if that is what you want.

5) Once the burn starts, you should see the progress bar here at Step 4 of 4. Remember the amount of time it takes to complete the burn depends on many factors... be patient.

6) If all you wanted was a bootable DVD, you are finished when you see the image below, close theprogram or start over if you wish to make a 2nd copy.

You need a USB flash drive with at least 4GB of free space, and the flash drive will be formattted toNTFS! So backup your data before creating this bootable USB, or you will lose all your data!

Repair CD - System Repair Disk

Recently questions were raised as to what functions are available onthe System Repair CD - Create that Windows 7 will create and burnto a CD.

These clips are are from a 32 bit CD I made:Insert the CD in the CD / DVD drive and reboot the computer.When requested, "Hit any key to boot from CD."

How to Restore the Windows 7 MBR (Master Boot Record)

Information

If you have been dual booting with Linux, then you probably know one of the Linux boot managers likeGrub or LILO has been installed in the MBR of your hard drive. What can you do when you no longerwant Linux on that hard drive? This tutorial will show you how to use your 7 DVD and BOOTSECT.EXE torestore the "bootsector code" of the MBR and allow you to begin booting to Windows 7 again.

Tip

You can use this method to update the bootsector code for Windows 7, Vista, XP, 2000 or switchbetween Bootmgr and NTLDR. Just check the Microsoft TechNet site for the correct command.

Here's How:

1. Boot your computer to the Windows 7 DVD (or to a "Repair CD "). At this screen choose to install now.

2. Select your language and click next.

6. The command we will use, bootsect.exe, is in a folder (named boot) on the DVD.We need to know what drive letter has been assigned the DVD drive to access the folder.

Code:

Type: diskpart and press Enter

Type: select disk 0 (zero)and press Enter

type: list volume and press Enter

7. Use your DVD drive letter and

Code:

Type: exit

and press Enter

to close Diskpart

Type: G: (use the letter of your DVD drive)and press Enter

Type: cd boot and press Enter

to verify that bootcect.exe is there (if you really need to)


8. To restore the "bootsector code":

TYPE: bootsect /nt60 SYS /mbr and press Enter


NOTE: If this method fails to restore the MBR, you can try the bootrec command as it is also a tool for repairing the MBR .

9. When completed successfully,

Bloatware

Most all factory built PCs today come with many programs and applications added by the PCmanufacturer that have little or no use in everyday life, they tend to take up space and in some

instances cause performance issues and using Windows to uninstall these progs/apps may result instartup and / or shutdown issues; here is a way to get a fresh, clean installation of Windows without allthe factory added software; this method also works for Windows Vista.

Warning

Some of the methods outlined below will completely over-write any and all data on the entire Hard DiskDrive / Solid State Drive depending on the method you use. Doing a clean install of Windows will over-write the "old" factory installed Windows and may void any factory warranty the PC came with.

You will have to reinstall all the programs/apps that you use as they integrate themselves into theWindows registry and are not moveable from one Windows installation to another so be sure to savethe program installers and the product activation keys where applicable.

Note

It would be a good idea to copy out or make backups of any data you need to save to the externalmedia of your choice before you start this; also be sure to create the set of Factory Restore disks if youhaven't already so you have a path back if need be.

You may also choose to create and store externally an image of the entire HDD / SSD so the PC can berestored to factory condition if the need ever arises, have a look at this tutorial.

Imaging with Free Macrium

More than likely your factory built PC didn't come with a Windows 7 installation DVD so you will need toborrow or download installation media of the exact same Windows 7 version the PC shipped with so youcan do a clean install using the Windows activation key on the Certificate of Authenticity (COA) stickerattached to the PC though it may require a robo-call to MS to sort the OEM batch-key; the factory COA

sticker MS Windows activation key will be similar to this one below, 5 groups of 5 letters / numbers.

Restoring From The Acer Aspire System RecoveryPartition

Keep in mind that running the recovery will restore the computer to the way it was when youfirst brought it home. Anything you added will be lost, so make sure you have program disks,

passwords, favorite websites, photos, documents and anything else you need backed up before proceeding with the recovery of your Acer Aspire.

Hard Disk Recovery should be enabled by default. If it is not, you may need to go into your systems BIOS by hitting F2 at boot and enable it under the Advanced tab.

Once Hard Disk Recovery is enabled, restart the system and hit ALT+F10. This will beginrestoring from the Aspire system recovery partition. You will be prompted to type six zeros as asecurity step. Type 000000 to proceed.

You will then see a screen to select your Operating System. Do this and hit enter and therecovery process will begin.

Partition Magic is a commercial program by Symantec that allows you to move partitionswithout destroying data. This is called a non-destructive partitioning. Typically, if you wanted tomake two partitions out of one, you would have to delete the large partition and create two. With

partition Magic, you can simply resize the large one and create a second partition without losingdata.
