Pre-Instructional Activities 5 Minutes

1. Before the beginning of the workshop, post a typed note on the projector asking

students to log into their Edmodo accounts by going to the following address:

www.edmodo.com

This will assess entry skills of entering Edmodo information to create accounts,

choosing appropriate passwords, and opening web browsers. If students have not

yet created accounts, show them how to get to the login page and enter basic profile

information so they will be ready for the next steps.

2. Welcome students to the workshop and introduce yourself. Ask students to share

aloud what the school’s expectations are for parent communication. As the

teacher’s share the school’s policy that teachers communicate with all parents

regularly, ask them to elaborate on some types of information that should be

communicated to parents. Examples include field trips, upcoming tests and

homework, etc.

3. Explain that today they will be learning a new educational social media tool similar to

Facebook that can be used to communicate information with parents. The tool is

called Edmodo, and while it can do more than just communicate with parents, that is

what we will be focusing on today. Ask them to note when and how Edmodo is used

to communicate with parents in the video

4. Play the following YouTube video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-KBwriCO-Q

5. After the video, give learners a moment to share with others near them what parent

communication they observed in the video.

6. Notify students of the goal of the workshop, explaining that when notifying parents

about important events, they will post updates using Edmodo. They will be able to

Page 6: How to Post Notes in Edmodo · 1. Before the beginning of the workshop, post a typed note on the projector asking students to log into their Edmodo accounts by going to the following

PAGE 5

attach files and library files, share links, and set the notes to post at later dates and

times.

7. Inform learners that locating the group code from their pages and distributing the

code to parents are prerequisite skills. However, if learners have not yet done those

two things, they will be instructed how to do them later in the workshop (at the end of

cluster 6).

Page 7: How to Post Notes in Edmodo · 1. Before the beginning of the workshop, post a typed note on the projector asking students to log into their Edmodo accounts by going to the following

PAGE 6

Cluster 1 5 Minutes

1. Explain to learners that first they will learn how to type a note in Edmodo after

logging in. On the screen, log into Edmodo.

2. Next, click on the note tab.

Page 8: How to Post Notes in Edmodo · 1. Before the beginning of the workshop, post a typed note on the projector asking students to log into their Edmodo accounts by going to the following

PAGE 7

3. Type a one sentence note related to a school event in the note box.

4. Repeat, but click on assignment, quiz, poll, and snapshot tabs instead one time

each to show the difference between those and the note tab. Question students

as you go, asking, “What would you likely do in this tab?”

5. Demonstrate clicking on the note tab again correctly a few times. As you go, ask

learners to tell you where to correctly click to type a note to informally assess

their understanding.

6. After modeling clicking in the note tab and typing a sentence a few times, repeat

the steps aloud again while students complete them simultaneously on their own

computers. Provide verbal feedback when students compete the process

correctly. When errors are made, explain to students where the errors were

made and how to correct them. Give students multiple opportunities to practice

these steps.

7. Have students complete the cluster 1 practice test independently without you

providing the steps. Have assistant instructors circulate throughout the room and

complete checklists for each student, indicating whether or not they have

completed all of the steps correctly. If not, additional instruction should be given

in areas where errors were made, and learners should then complete the

practice test again until they demonstrate mastery.

Cluster 2 5 Minutes

1. Explain that now that learners know how to log into Edmodo and type a note,

they will learn how to add an attached file. Explain what an attachment is, and

ask students to share times when it might be necessary to share files with

parents, such as rubrics that will be used to grade assignments.

2. Share some non-examples of attachments that would be posted differently, such

as links to websites. Explain the difference between a link (a connection to a

web page) and an attachment (a copy of a file attached to your note).

3. Then share some examples of attachments (rubrics, typed newsletters, lists, etc.)

that are saved on your computer or drive. Ask students to classify a few items as

either attachments or not attachments through whole class discussion.

sample items for attachments

a field trip note saved on your computer

a list of school supplies saved on your Google drive

sample items for non-examples of attachments

a link to the district webpage

a link to the Pebble Go webpage for students to do research

7. Repeat adding an attachment a few times on the screen, asking students

questions about where to click to complete the process.

8. Now say the steps aloud while learners follow along and complete the steps on

their own computers. Provide verbal feedback when students compete the

process correctly. When errors are made, explain to students where the errors

were made and how to correct them. Give students multiple opportunities to

practice these steps.

9. Have students complete the cluster 2 practice test independently without you

providing the steps. Have assistant instructors circulate throughout the room and

complete checklists for each student, indicating whether or not they have

completed all of the steps on the practice test correctly. If not, additional

instruction should be given in areas where errors were made, and learners

should then complete the practice test again until they demonstrate mastery.

5. Type the name of the website you are linking. Explain to learners why it is

important to provide a specific name of the website so parents have an idea

where the link is leading them. Ex: Xtramath

6. Provide non-examples for what to name websites, using vague terms. Ex: “link”

and “website”

7. Then provide examples of specific names teachers could use to name websites,

such as “Reading A-Z” or “Pebble Go.”

Page 17: How to Post Notes in Edmodo · 1. Before the beginning of the workshop, post a typed note on the projector asking students to log into their Edmodo accounts by going to the following

Cluster 5 10 Minutes

1. Explain that students will now learn how to set their notes to post at later dates

and/or times. Ask students to share aloud times when it would be beneficial to

delay the posting of a note until a later date and/or time. Ex: setting a note to

post the night before an important assignment is due

2. Using the projector and screen, begin modeling the process of how to set notes

to post at a later date and/or time by typing a new one sentence note in the note

box and clicking the Send Later icon beneath it. Ex: Tomorrow morning is the

unit 6 math test!

8. Provide a few examples where you repeat steps 2-7 and deliberately make

errors. Ex: set the time but forget to set AM/PM. Ask learners to share with

partners where the errors were made.

9. Repeat steps 2-7 again correctly. Ask learners questions about where to click

as you go to informally assess understanding.

10. Now say the steps aloud while learners complete the steps on their own

computers. Provide positive verbal feedback when students complete the

process correctly. When errors are made, explain to students where the

errors were made and how to correct them. Give students multiple

opportunities to practice.

11. Have students complete the cluster 3 practice test independently without

providing the steps. Have assistant instructors circulate throughout the room

and complete checklists for each student, indicating whether or not they have

completed all of the steps correctly. If not, additional instruction should be

given in areas where errors were made, and learners should then complete

the practice test again until they demonstrate mastery.

Post-test

1. Tell learners that now they will have the opportunity to demonstrate all of the

skills they have learned during the workshop to post a note in Edmodo

independently.

2. Tell learners to close all open browser windows so they have only their desktops

visible.

3. Pass out the post-test directions to each student. Read over them briefly and tell

learners they will need to complete all steps independently, without consulting

the instructor or other students. They should work quietly.

4. Pause to allow learners to ask any questions before beginning.

5. Tell students to begin. You and your assistant instructors should walk around the

room with the post-test checklists. As students work and complete the tasks, fill

out the checklists for all learners. If learners fail to complete any of the steps

correctly, provide feedback about where errors occurred. Then ask those

learners to repeat the steps again until they do them successfully. Provide

positive feedback when students complete the steps correctly.

Conclusion and Survey

1. Review the goal of the workshop, telling learners that now when notifying parents

about important events, they have the necessary skills to post updates using

Edmodo. They are able to attach files and library files, share links, and set the

notes to post at later dates and times.

2. Compliment learners for their hard work and thank them for their time and

attention.

3. Pass out the learner surveys and read the directions aloud. Ask learners to fill

out the surveys and hand them to you as they leave. Explain that they should be

filled out completely and honestly.

4. As they hand you the completed surveys, again thank them for their time and

attention.

Follow-Through Activities

Memory Aids

A handout will be provided to all learners at the end of the workshop. The handout will

contain directions and photos for each step of the process of posting notes in Edmodo

covered in this workshop.

Transfer strategy

After the completion of this workshop, it will be school policy that all elementary

teachers in the building will use Edmodo to communicate important information to

parents. Parents will be notified of the policy and trained in how to access their

children’s classroom Edmodo pages through handouts and brief presentations at Meet

the Teacher Night and other school events. Clearly conveying the expectation that

Edmodo will be used for communication will help increase the likelihood that teachers

will use the skills learned in this workshop in the future.

The school will also continue providing support for teachers using Edmodo. Teachers

will be informed that they can contact the technology help desk either by phone or

electronic tech ticket to receive guidance with any issues they encounter using Edmodo.

Links to Edmodo will be installed on the district webpage, providing easy access for

teachers. Administrators will also follow up with teachers throughout the year to get

feedback on both benefits and frustrations teachers are encountering with the use of

Edmodo.
