    WHY WE FEAR PUBLIC OPINION.

When other people’s voices are added to the accusing voice of guilt, then it can totally annihilate

the individual. The destruction could e great indeed. !t could oth e emotional, mental or even physical. That is "hy in a lot of ancient cultures, guilt "as used as an instrument of crime

prevention, along side shame. #ormally people "ho commit crimes are only needed to e ta$en

ac$ to their communities, to"ns and villages to e pulicly e%posed. That in turn is used to

scare and frighten other citi&ens to discourage them from similar offenses in the future. That is

the po"er of pulic opinion eing used as an instrument of 'ustice.

“There are certain times when public opinion is the worst of all opinions.” – Nicolas Chamfort

(ome offenders in some other cultures are pulicly e%ecuted or punished as in some !slamic

nations today. (o this is ma%imi&ing the fear of pulic opinion to prevent crimes and uncalled for

ehaviors. Apart from the e%tremely destructive effect these actions have on the guilty party, families and relatives of such people suffer the conse)uences for generations to come.

*et another reason "hy people are panic$y efore the po"er of pulic opinion, is the fear of

eing ostraci&ed. #o one "ants to e an outcast in his very community. #oody desires to eostraci&ed from his neighorhood. #oody "ants to e ostraci&ed from his city, country or from

his society. +ecognition and acceptance are some of the fundamental human needs.

We need to e accepted. We possess the need of eing accepted. !t is legitimate to "ant to e

recogni&ed. !t is an inherent feeling inuilt in us that "e should e recogni&ed. oth those asichuman needs are completely destroyed "hen you are ostraci&ed from our very family or

community. (hame, guilt, eing an outcast, fuel the fear of pulic opinion.

As "e can see, our fear of pulic opinion is so po"erful, ecause it is inherently connected to thefundamental human needs of man. The need to e accepted, the need to e celerated, the needto e recogni&ed, the need to e honored, the need to feel important, the need for "orth, the need

to e understood and the need to feel needed.

ecause these needs are so asic to man, psychologically "e don’t "ant to live "ithout them. !t

is difficult. -specially "hen you need to go against a large population of people "ho are all

opposing you. !n such cases you need a lot of "ill po"er and inner strength to simply survive it.

#o "onder pulic opinion has ecome a po"erful control factor in our "orld today.

The prolem is once you fall under that influence of fear of pulic opinion, you ecome evenmore susceptile to control, ondage and psychological slavery. The fear of pulic opinion ends

up captivating you, inds you hand and foot, so much that you still lose those same fundamentalhuman needs of acceptance, celeration, recognition, honor, importance, "orth, understanding

and the feeling of eing needed.
