Aims
- Outline a workflow for gaining maximum
learning from work experience
- Demonstrate key Kloodle features for this
Overview
1.Creating a badge to teach students how they can “sell
themselves” to an employer
2.Making work experience a competitive process
3.Learning to articulate skill development whilst out on work
experience
4.Following up work experience to cement learning
5.Deriving data from the process
Work experience is a valuable learning
opportunity. Students should learn
valuable employability skills, what it takes
to get a job and workplace behaviours
Problem 1
Employers are often reluctant to participate
in work experience as students contribute
little during their time on work experience.
Solution
Students should learn that work is
provided if you can fulfil a need. I.e. the
skills you possess add value to the
organisation you work for
Exercise 1: - Kloodle badge to get students
to think about how they could add value to
an employer
This information can then be shared with employers to
demonstrate that the student understands what is
required of them
EXTENSION - create a “health and safety” badge -
students produce work that outlines they understand
health and safety risks. This will allay employers’ fears.
Problem
- Students are trained to think work experience is a right
- Teachers do all the running to provide a placement
- Students need to learn that applying for jobs is
competitive and they need to be GOOD!
Solution
Make work experience a competitive process
Share profile with employer
Whilst out on work experience, students should be
consciously developing their employability skills
Problem
- Students struggle to identify the employability skills they
are developing in everyday activities
Solution
- Provide activities that teach students to learn the
vocabulary of employability and how to associate skills to
each activity
Reflections on work experience should cement
learning.
Solution
- Create a vigorous follow up process
Generate a badge to award post work
experience
- Get students to present their profile
- Award them a badge for follow up
Derive data / evidence from the process
Post work experience, student work then generates
information you can use for your records.
