How to Light Your Advent Wreath

1. Make the Sign of the Cross

• As with any prayer or Catholic ritual, you should begin by making The Sign of the Cross

2. Light the Appropriate Number of Candles

• Hope - the first week of Advent, light one purple candle

• Love - the second week of Advent, light two purple candles

• Joy - the third week of Advent (beginning with Gaudete Sunday), light two purple candles and one

rose candle

• Peace - the fourth week, light all four candles

3. Many families have adopted the following custom:

• The youngest child lights the candle in the first week.

• The oldest child lights the candles in the second week.

• The mother lights the candles in the third week.

• The father lights the candles in the fourth week.

Advent Week One - Light the first purple candle

1. Pray the Advent Wreath Prayer for the Week

The father (or other leader) leads the family (or group) in the appropriate Advent Wreath

Prayer: Scriptures:

Stir up thy power, O Lord, and come, Isaiah 11:1-10

that by thy protection we may be rescued Luke: 1:26-38

from the dangers that beset us through our sins; Isaiah 7:10-14

and be a Redeemer to deliver us; Matthew 1:18-24

Who livest and reignest with God the Father

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

ever one God, world without end. Amen.

2. Leave the Advent Wreath Burning

Many families light the Advent wreath before dinner and leave it burning throughout dinner. You can also

light it before private or family prayer, or before engaging in an Advent devotion such as the daily

Scripture readings for Advent.

3. Extinguish the Candles

After dinner and/or your Advent devotions, carefully extinguish all of the candles on the Advent wreath.

4. End With the Sign of the Cross

As with all devotions, the lighting of the Advent wreath should end with the Sign of the Cross.

WHAT IS ADVENT?

Advent comes from the Latin word meaning "coming." Jesus is coming, and Advent is intended to be a

season of preparation for His arrival. While we typically regard Advent as a joyous season, it is also intended

to be a period of preparation, much like Lent. Prayer, penance and fasting are appropriate during this season.

Advent is not as strict as Lent, and there are no rules for fasting, but it is meant to be a period of self-

preparation. The purple color associated with Advent is also the color of penance. The faithful should fast

during the first two weeks in particular and receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

The color of the Third Sunday of Advent is rose. This color symbolizes joy and represents the

happiness we will experience when Jesus comes again. The Third Sunday is a day of anticipatory celebration.

It is formerly called "Gaudete" Sunday; “Gaudete” means "rejoice" in Latin.

WHY IS ADVENT IMPORTANT? Preparation for Christmas is an important theme for Advent, but more is involved. Advent gives us a

vision of our lives as Christians and shows us the possibilities of life.

The vision of life that Advent gives us is twofold; it looks back to the first coming of Christ at Bethlehem, and

it looks to the future when Christ will come again. In the interval between these two events we find meaning

for our life as a Christian.

First we celebrate Christ-become-human. We view his life and experience his presence as a human

being in our history. Christ came to show us what life can and should be. He gave us true and valid principles

by which we can live true and valid lives. But Jesus knew that the human heart could not live in isolation. He

formed the Church around the concept of a people held together by love. In that community we discover

unlimited possibilities and meaning. Alone we can do nothing. Together we find real meaning.

When Christ left this earth, he did not abandon us. He remains with us in his Spirit, the Church, the

sacraments, the Scriptures and each other. He lives in community with us and keeps his vision of life before

us.

When Christ comes again, his presence will no longer be hidden behind the signs and symbols of the

liturgy or the words of the Scriptures. His presence among us will be revealed in all its fullness, a presence

that will never end, a presence that will perfect and complete our community.

This is the "greater significance" of Advent. In these few short weeks we take in the sweeping panorama of

time - from Christ's birth to his Second Coming. The season of Advent brings us the magnificent vision of life

and hope for the future given to us by Christ.

Advent is our time to become more involved, more caught up in the meaning and the possibilities of

life as a Christian community. Thus we are preparing not only for Christmas but also for Christ's Second

Coming.

Lord Jesus, when you comes again, let us be awake and watchful, so that you will not find us asleep. Amen.

CURRENT STUDY: THE LIFE ETERNAL

The biblical promise of eternal life appears late in

Scripture, but it blossoms into fullness with the

resurrection of Christ. Explore the growing nature

of the hope of those who have called upon the God

of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the past, and the

crystallization of our hope for eternal life in the

victory of Christ over death. Those with some

familiarity with Scripture will find it both inspiring

and informative as the hope of eternal life develops

and crystallizes through the sweep of salvation

history.

Poor Box Did you know that our Poor Box is the main

source of income for the Justice and Peace

Ministry?

We help numerous families throughout the year

with assistance paying for rent, water and

electricity. In the first four months of this fiscal

year we have helped 26 families and a total of 84

family members.

The second collection this weekend November 9

and 10 will go directly to this ministry, to help

cover these expenses.

Thank you for your continued support.

SACRED STUDS

Habitat for Humanity Faith Build Projects are

collaborations where churches assist In the Habitat

mission to provide shelter for families in need.

Together they work to fund and build a home.

This May 2017our area will place a “Sacred

Stud” in the frame work of a home we are building.

The Sacred Studs are cut from plain wood

construction studs. Then, the Studs will be brought to

our church. We will write our favorite scripture or

other words of encouragement on them. We will then

pray over the Studs for both the Habitat Volunteers

and the family who will be moving into the home. The

Stud will be assembled in the wall creating a Holy

Wall in the home.

Before all wall board covers the Holy Wall, a

community service will be held at the home to

celebrate how God’s Word enriches all we do in life!

Dear friends, I would like to take this opportunity to say thank

you to our wonderful parishioners, both ladies and gentlemen, for all their hard work in making this year's Holiday Craft Fair such a success.

The people who volunteer their time, starting in February, are the backbone of our Parish. They do not know the word NO.

The week before the fair is particularly grueling, yet even more of our wonderful friends come to help. This year we are able to give to Father, for the building fund, an additional $6,500.

It has been my pleasure over the last few years to serve as the chair of this great event. As of December 1st I am turning the craft fair over to the very able hands of Cynthia Aycock. I ask that you give her all your help as you have to me.

Thank you all for all you do. Holiday Blessings to all, Patricia Amato
