INTRODUCTION

Innovation is an eternal topic and has become more and more important in each domain. Many useful innovation methodologies are discussed and studied comprehensively.

Innovation thinking means a breakthrough action, which can re-structure the related knowledge and experience to get a brand new and valuable achievement.

The main objective is based on the comparison and contrast of the different methods and many common innovation methodologies.

INTRODUCTION

• Generally speaking, innovation thinking process isin a circle model. Based on the knowledge andexperience, ‘primary information input’ can be transformed into ‘information output’ withinnovation action ‘I’. ‘Rs’ means the ‘Resultstatus’ of thinking. Then, in a innovation thinkingcircle.

• Different innovation methodologies have differentways to organise the knowledge and experienceand different methods to deal with the informationinput.

INTRODUCTION

From 1930s to 1980s, more than 300 innovationmethodologies had appeared. Until today, thereare some common methods for innovationapplied in different domains, such as BS, 5W2H, Bionic association and triz, etc.

Each innovation methodology has its strength andweakness. It is a meaningful thing to know thecharacteristics of each method.

2.1. METHODOLOGIES.( Brainstorming)

Brainstorming was put forward by Osborn. BS advocates that the persons in the symposium should express their ideas freely. BS points is very helpful to break through psychological inertia to gain many valuable conceptions.

There are four rules for BS, which are: ‘Free association’, ‘Criticism-forbiddance’, ‘To improve quality by quantity’‘To reform and improve the ideas continually’.By BS, the participators can exchange information and

enlighten each other.

2.1. METHODOLOGIES.( Brainstorming)

• BS believes that innovation is a non-logical process. It depends on the participator’s intuition and inspiration. There is no essential rule for the inventing activities. The searching for the solutions to the problems depends on large quantity of possible ideas. The quantity of possible ideas is the premise for the possibility of gaining the solutions with good quality.

• BS requires the participators from the different domains. It is easy to get various possible solutions because offree association. But Optimized Solution is hard to find. BS can usually get Local Optimized Solution. And thereare always lots of un-useful solutions produced duringthe solution-searching process.

• Since its birth, BS has been applied widely in manydomains, such as technology innovation, management, market innovation and invention and so on because of itseasy operation and science. The operation procedure ofBS can be divided into five steps.

2.2 METHODOLOGIES.(5W2H)

• 5W2H suggests that problem can be analyzed based on 6 aspects, which are Why, What, Who, When, Where andHow. The essence of 5W2H is to analyze problemsystematically, including the essence of the object (What), the essence of the subject (Who), the problem-existenceways in time and space (When, Where), the solution of theproblem (How).

• Basd on the improvement of 5W2H, ‘How’ can be dividedinto ‘How to’ and ‘How much’. ‘How to’ means the way toresolve the problem. ‘How much’ means the degree of theproblem-resolving.

The procedure of 5W2H can follow the steps:

• As a kind of innovation methodology, bionicassociation means that human being observe theorganisms’ behavior and use the organisms systemas a reference to establish the artificial technologysystem to resolve the problems.

• Bionic association can produce high-levelinnovation ideas. At present, the performance ofmost bionic-artificial technology system can’t reachthe level of the corresponding organisms system.

• Bionic association can be achieved by the followingsteps:

– Observe the organisms’ behavior carefully. Takethe phenomena of the organisms as theassociation objects.

– Analyse the mechanism of the phenomena of theorganisms system.

– Analyse the practical problem. Develop a bionicidea into a problem-solving method or product.

• Combination innovation is to combine more thantwo technology elements together and get a newproduct. Those technology elements are usuallysubstance unit, technics, principles, structures,functions and so on.

• Because the existing technology elements havebeen applied in different domains, combination ofthose technology elements is a method with largepossibility. The idea from combination innovation ismore feasible. According to the characteristics ofcombination innovation, it can be classified into 6 types.

• Technology combination. It means to combine the different technology elements to get a newperformance of a product.

• Material combination. Different materials are combined together to get a new material withnew character. The new material always can meet the new engineering requirement.

• Product combination. More than two productsare combined to get a new product with more functions.

• Suit combination. In order to get a new portableproduct, the products with different standards can be combined based on the structure re-design.

• Function combination. Many different functions are combined together to get a new product with multi-function.

• Structure combination. Based on the structure re-combination, a new product with compound functioncan be gotten.

2.5 Reverse Innovation

• Based on the analysis of existing product, a new product can be designed by improvingthe example product. This kind of innovationmethod is called reverse innovation.

• Reverse innovation is employed widely in Japan and Korea. It is a very effectivemethod sometimes.

2.6 Technology Transplant

• Transplanting an advanced technology ofone domain into the other domains ortransplanting an advanced technology of oneproduct into the other products to get a newproduct with wonderful performance. Thiskind of innovation method is calledtechnology transplant.

• Example: Transplant loto efect totechnology of plasma (hridrophofic use).

2.7 TRIZ

• TRIZ (the Russian acronym for the theory) is theknowledge-based, systematic approach to innovation. Developed in the former Soviet Union by Genrich S. Altshuller (1926-1998) and his school, TRIZ methods are drawn from analysis of the most innovative inventions in different industries, technologies, and fields ofengineering.

• Triz involves a systematic analysis of the systemto be improved and the application of a series ofguidelines for problem definition. Triz classifiesinnovative problems and offers correspondingproblem-solving methods for each class ofproblem.
