How To Get Rid Of Dark Circles / Under Eye Circles

A lot of people across various age groups tend to get under eye circles and the many

reasons they attribute the dark circles to are lack of sleep, stress, strain on the eyes due to

excessive use of the computer to name a few. Additionally, dark circles can be due to

genetic trait, can be post-traumatic, can be post-inflammatory, or can be a side effect of any

drug use.

Mercury or silver containing preparations can cause slate blue or grey brown discolouration.

Long term treatment with minocycline (an antibiotic) can cause grey discolouration.

Cosmetics containing phototoxic agents (8-methoxypsoralen) can cause

periorbitalmelanosis. Certain kind of eczemas (eg. Atopic dermatitis) can cause increased

pigmentation.

To manage under eye circles, a thorough investigation to rule out any iron deficiency

anaemia, Vit B12 deficiency or to rule out any systemic illness must be conducted.

Treatment includes the following:

1. Adequate rest, nutritious diet, avoiding prolonged exposure to the computer screen and a

healthy work life balance.

2. In cases of periorbitalmelanosis due to cosmetic or any chemical use, the offending

cosmetic / chemical should be disconitnued. In these cases, a mild steroid may help in

reducing the irritation and subsequently decrease the pigmentation. Topical application of

medicines containing Retinol, Vit K, Biophytex, Proteasyl, Propylene Glycol, Dimethicone

etc. applied in the night time can help in reducing under eye circles.

3. Recent advances have suggested a role of Vit C extract in removing dark circles.

4. Chemical Peeling – Among all the available chemical peels that can be used for facial

pigmentation, a small minority can be exclusively used for under eye circles. Chemical

peels with glycolic acid, lactic acid, pyruvic acid, etc. can be used at 2-3 weeks interval for

best results.

5. LASERs – Use of LASER by a qualified dermatologist / cosmetologist can also give good

results.

So if under eye circles are bringing you down then fret not. Ensure to make some lifestyle

changes and consult a dermatologist. You’ll be just fine.
