  • How to Draw Goku from Dragonball Z

    Front View

Step 1:Most Dragonball Z characters can bedrawn using these basic shapes andproportions. Dragonball Z characters allhave similarly constructed faces: theyhave large foreheads, slanted, triangulareyes, and small lower faces. Once you seehow the basic face is proportioned, itshould be easier to draw whichevercharacter you like.

Begin by drawing a large, slightlyelongated circle for the forehead. Drawthe lower half of the face and divide it upwith lightly drawn guidelines as shown.Notice that the lower half of his face canbe divided up into equal sections; the mainhorizontal guidelines are equidistant fromeach other. Draw the slanted guidelinesfor the eyes, and sketch the position of themouth (which should be directly below theguideline for the nose). Make sure all theguidelines are drawn lightly, because youare going to erase them later on.

Step 2:Erase some of the unnecessaryguidelines. Draw the outline of theeyes, which are just blocky, angledtrapezoids. Make sure the bottom ofthe eyes line up with the slantedguideline you drew in earlier.

  • Step 3:Next, sketch the outline of his hair. The hair is very large and spiky;notice how it smooths out slightlyon the right side (our right, not his)of his head, though. Add more detailto his eyes and ears. When drawinghis eyebrows, make sure that theyrest directly above his eyes. Drawthe nose and mouth next, makingthem very small and close together. The nose should be sort of like ablocky 'L' or wedge.

Step 4:Next, erase all the guidelines. Addthe shading under his eyes andmouth, and add detail to his ears.Next, draw the neck, muscles, andclothing. DBZ necks are usuallypretty wide, so make sure the neckstarts just beneath the ears. Eraseany unwanted lines and clean upyour sketch.

Step 5:Take your final sketch and color or

  • shade it however you like. Noticethat the shading on his hair is verysubtle, and gives the otherwise flatspikes more dimension, so youknow his hair doesn't just go straightback like Ryoko's (from TenchiMuyo), it kind of sticks out in alldirections. ^_^

    3/4 View

Step 1:Next, we'll draw the 3/4 view. Theseproportions will work for other DBZcharacters, too.

Draw a large circle, then add thelower half of the face and divide theshapes up with guidelines. These arepretty much the same shapes as inthe front view, except they havebeen rotated downwards and to theside. The 3/4 view has lessguidelines than the front view, butthat's only because adding themwould be unneccesary at this angle. We'll only be using the guidelinesfor the eyes, nose, and the centralguideline that runs from theforehead to the chin.

  • Step 2:Next, use the upper horizontalguideline to draw in the eyes andeyebrows. Draw the nose andmouth, making sure to draw themouth very close to the nose. Thefeatures of the face should havevery sharp angles. Notice that whileon the front view his nose lookssmall, on the 3/4 view it is muchlonger and pointed.

Step 3:Erase all the guidelines. Draw thebasic shape of his hair, making itvery thick and rounded. Noticeagain that the hair flattens androunds out on the right side of hishead. Add his pupils, draw in theeyebrow ridges above his eyes, andshade beneath his mouth.

Step 4:Erase all unnecessary lines. Add thedetail in his ears, and add shading to

  • his eyes. I added a few light glaresto his pupils out of habit, eventhough DBZ characters almostnever have such details on the eyes. You can leave them out if you like, but I think they look fine. Again, hisneck muscles are very large, so startthem just below the ear. Add therest of his muscles and clothes, thenclean up your sketch and prepare itfor the final draft.

Step 5:Now that you have drawn his face, you can shade and color it howeveryou like. Notice again that the subtleshading on the hair shows that itsticks out in various directionsrather than just going straight back.Make sure to try to include this ifyou shade your picture.

  • Goku, like several other characters on DBZ, cantransform into a Super Saiyajin (my apologies if Ispelled that wrong). From what I could discernfrom the internet, he has at least three or fourdifferent forms, but I really don't have the patienceto go through each of them right now. ^_^ Thedifferences are slight, anyway, and if you knowwhich features to exaggerate, its not that much of aproblem.

To draw Goku (or anyone, for that matter) in SuperSaiyajin form, you'll have to make a fewadjustments to his face, as well as his hair. Hishead and body should be wider, while the faceitself is smaller. The features are more slanted andgrouped closer together. The lines of his face willbe much more sharp and slanted, and his eyes willbe much more narrow. The chest and arm musclesare increasingly larger and rounder for everyfurther transformation. These adjustments can beused on any Super Saiyajin. For the hair, basically just draw a series of sharplyangled, pointed spikes that extrude from his scalp. It helps to draw the outline of his head, as shown inthis picture, so you can tell where the hair shouldgo. It's easy to make it too big or too small if youdon't know where to position it. Even though it'sspiky, make the hair full and rounded, rather thanjust using straight spikes. All the spikes shouldcurve inward, not just stick straight.

Here's what the hair should look like when theguideline for the back of the head has beenremoved and the hair has been shaded. I did asloppy job of coloring the hair, though; the shadingshould be much less rounded than it is in thisparticular picture. You can look at other pictures ofhim on the internet or elsewhere for furtherreference.
