Water according to the season. More often in summer and less in winter. Water soil directly, not the leaves. A trigger spray water bottle is recommended for succulent gardens containing small plants. Avoid overwatering. A good rule of thumb is to test the soil by pushing your finger 5cms into the soil. The soil should be dry before your plants need to be watered. Succulents thrive in natural light. They need 4-6 hours exposure per day. Indoors or outdoors, succulents prefer the morning sun. Some varieties of succulents can become sunburnt. Dropping leaves. If upper plant leaves turn yellow before dropping off, they most likely need more light. Plant becomes too tall and sparse or ‘stretched’.The plant needs more light. Leaves wilting. The plant needs a drink! Puffy stems and leaves. If the plant has translucent or mushy leaves or puffy looking stems and leaves, it has been overwatered. Reduce the watering and see if the plant responds. New plants can be grown from leaves. Break or cut the leaf off the plant. Place the leaf flat on soil and leave in shade for a few days. This allows the cut to ‘heal’ before planting in soil. Some succulents will have ‘pups’ which are baby plants that grow from short stems near the base of the plant. These can be removed and left for a few days to ‘heal’ in shade before planting in soil.
