your profile is much the same as for any other social networking site.

“dynamic badges” have just been improved, according to

StumbleUpon; and adding one will get your site or blog

…by the more than 12 million estimated StumbleUpon users. (When

they click on your badge, they’ll get a tiny popup that allows them to

instantly and easily perform these 3 actions.)

You can be “stumbling” within minutes – it’s that easy to use. And the

buttons on its easily installed toolbar (one click) allow you to instantly

share your finds with your Facebook and Twitter accounts. (One

particularly nice feature is the automatic use of thumbnails from the

sites you find, to enhance your Facebook post. And if the selection of

thumbnails is not suitable for any reason, you can turn them off as

simply as clicking the little “no” checkbox.)

archives whose work you want it to stumble. It’s as simple as clicking

on the icons.

IV: How StumbleUpon Works

We can all agree that clicking a little button is simplicity itself, but the

real reason StumbleUpon works so well lies in the quality of the

content it instantly serves you. Not only does that include websites

and blogs, but you can choose (or refuse) to have content served by

channels for WikiPedia or the News media; plus you can search

videos, as well as images and photos only, too.

There were, at last count, over 500 topic categories to choose from.

With one click, you can press the “All” button on the toolbar and select

a specific topic instead from the drop-down menu. Even the “All” is

not generalized – it’s something you are able to customize and align

with your own specific interests when you set up your account, which

is free.

you – presenting you every time you arrive with a selection of sites

A Solid History

StumbleUpon has stood the test of time, too. It’s no flash-in-the-pan

social phenomenon, quick to die off. Its developers have a solid track

record of listening to users and refining the service so that it performs

ever better. Born in 2001, it grew from just under 2 million users in

2006 to 12 million and counting in April, 2010.

A brief stint of being owned by eBay ended in 2009 when a group

including 2 of its original developers, Garrett Camp and Geoff Smith,

bought their baby back.

V. Drawbacks of StumbleUpon

If you’re thinking StumbleUpon sounds almost too good to be true,

well, there may be one little fly in the ointment. There are many

complaints of users acquiring viruses through sites stumbled.

However, the risk would be just as great if you were manually surfing

multiple sites.

There are 2 concrete actions you can take, however, to make sure you

never run into this problem:

1. Make sure your virus protection is thoroughly up-to-date. If

your areas of interest are in particularly high-risk sites, prone to

frequent spyware, malware or viral attacks (for example, adult

sites, indiscriminate music download sites, gambling sites or

marketing sites) this will be particularly important to your success

in never encountering a virus problem.

In addition to a good virus program (a “professional” version is

highly preferable over a free one) you might want to specifically

add an anti-Malware or Spyware program.

Many people really speak highly of McAfee’s Site Advisor, which

rates sites with “red” or “green” lights as you visit them, warning

you of possible risk. WOT (Web of Trust) provides a similar service

(for free, though you can upgrade to a pro subscription).

2. Use Mozilla Firefox for browsing StumbleUpon – even if you

prefer to use a faster browser like Google Chrome for everything

else.

The reason for this? Unlike Internet Explorer, Opera and Google

Chrome, which are Microsoft Windows based, Firefox is Linux-

based. Most viruses and malware are created strictly for Windows-

based browser operating systems – far easier for hackers to access

than Linux-based ones.

But what about Safari, created for MAC users? The jury is out,

with half being firmly convinced that viruses aren’t a problem for

MAC users on Safari; the others insisting there are vulnerabilities.

Your own vulnerability, however, really does depend more on the

type of sites you access and the validity of your anti-virus and

anti-malware protection.
