How Soda Eats Away Skin Firming Collagen
At the height of hysteria, when Mayor Michael Bloomberg proposed a ban on supersize soft
drinks, the New York Times compile data on portion size to find if consumers knew what experts
call "sugar sweetened beverages."
It found that consumers consistently guessed wrong, they assumed that the larger cups held about
20% to 40% percent less liquid than they actually did.
So how much sugar is the average 12 0z can? According to the nutritional label it is 39g which
translates into 140 calories or 10 sugar cubes. So how does this affect your health, your skin and
not to mention your waist size.
Americans drink more soda than in any other country. On average, a whopping 57 gallons per
person each year. Sugar is of course the main component of this drink which actually advances
the aging of your skin, making your face appear more wrinkled and less youthful.
When a person eats foods that contain sugar, even complex carbohydrates, the body's sugar
levels spike and starts a natural process known as glycation.
The sugar in your bloodstream attaches to proteins in your body and the most vulnerable proteins,
according to Fredric Brandt, MD, a dermatologist and author of "10 Minutes 10 Years" are the
proteins for youthful and glowing skin, collagen and elastin.
Glycation robs collagen and elastin of its springy resiliency and elasticity, making them dry and
brittle, turning skin tough and inflexible, leading to wrinkles and sagging.
These aging effects are greater in people that have a sugary diet according to a study published in
the British Journal of Dermatology.
These also makes your skin even more susceptible to sun damage since you don't have
framework that collagen and elastin builds for your skin.
The entire process of course robs your skin of its suppleness, radiancy and firmness. The good
news of course is that with very little action you can begging to reverse damage skin.
Changing your diet will be a big part and doing anti-aging treatments like LED light therapy or
microcurrent facials are very beneficial, as they help build collagen and elastin.
You can always drink soda but just not too much as it ultimately affects your beautiful skin and
your health but I will cover that in a future article.
