why care?
• most people suck at email!
• people are busy!
• BE awesome at email = stand out
basic:subject• relevant & Searchable, W/ context
• NO: • “UPDATE” • “Following up” • “HELLO” • “introing Anthony to elise”
!• yes:
• “Intro: Anthony marnell (Mailjet) <> ELISE Nebout (le Camping)”
• “anthony (Mailjet) From MoN. API meetUP” • “SkETCHFAB Investor deck 7/2013” • “sales question from streamroot”
basic:efficiency (1)• Company email address! no gmail, com’on!
• GET TO THE POINT! no rambling. GoaL= 5 sentences or less • if not, at least break into defined sections !
• direct to one person at a time • no: “can anyone help with this?” • yes: “Elise - can you please..”
• Add links! • names (twitter, linkedin) • companies (link, twitter, angelist) • articles !
• meeting times • give me multiple range of options to choose from
basic:efficiency (2)• ASK
• Bold the ask and get to it quickly. Don’t make me search the email for what you want.
!• SIGNATURE
• include a text signature (not an image) • signature has relevant info (phone, twitter, site) !
• time of the week & day • monday > friday • morning > afternoon !
• reply to no response • reply all with a polite reminder message • “circling back on the below, Am still available to meet
at those times. are you free?”
intros:requesting• requestor MUST BE intro’ing you to SOMEONE
THEY actually KNOW & TRUst !
• Self contained forwardable email (SCFE)
• fresh email, contains all information needed forward to target in seconds
• Personalized - show you actually took the time and are not just copy/pasting !
• have a good reason!
• Don’t ask for an intro unless it’s going to be valuable! don’t make me waste my email karma
intros:responding• give target a chance to respond perhaps half a day
• if they respond first, LEAN IN
• thank them
• suggest range of meeting times
• if you respond first, Move person who intro’d to bcc
• “Thanks for the intro ELISE (moving to bcc)”
• “thanks ELISE! moving to bcc to save your inbox”
• then, lean in
Intros:closed loop• email the person who intro’d you & let them
know how it went in short note
• boomerang - powerful inbox tool to “boomerang” emails and have them return at set times
Intros:facilitate• two way introductions only!
• when someone asks you to intro them, it’s important to ask permission first
• shows you respect their time & Allows them to politely decline
final:thoughts• Personality
• Even a short & efficient email can allow your personality to show
• Don’t be afraid to be personal!
!
• Personalize
• read blogs & tweets of people you’re emailing
• don’t copy/Paste, better to spend the extra time and send multiple personalized emails
THANKS!
