What is Pollution

Pollution is the contamination of the environment by man-made substances or energy that have adverse effects on living or non-living matter. This contamination of air, water, or soil materials interferes with human health, the quality of life, or the natural functioning of ecosystems.

Causes Of Pollution

Industrial and urban centers are the source of pollutants that can weaken and even kill trees. Damage is especially severe in parts of the humid temperate zones, where clouds heavy with chemicals drench the forests and the soils on which they grow.

Pollution by factories and industries

It really depends on the factory's production. There are many types of pollution emitted from factories. These are air, waste, water, and even noise. Most commonly, we can see that factories emit massive amounts of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane. This is the main form of pollution. However, waste is also another type. Nuclear waste is the most dangerous waste there is and it directly pollutes the surrounding environment. This comes from nuclear reactors.

Pollution In India’s industrial crowns

Maharashtra and Gujarat are the brightest jewels in India’s industrial crown. But impressive industrial growth figures fail to hide the grim realities of environmental pollution. While, the state governments are only bothered about industrial growth, the civil society is struggling to draw public attention to the impending danger to the environmental and public health. Industrial survey statistics tell you that more than one-hird — 36.3 per cent — of the total value added by to the raw materials through manufacture in the factory sector of the country comes from Maharashtra (23.66 per cent) and Gujarat (12.64 per cent). Easily, the two most industrialised states of India. Governments of both the states claim they have created immense prosperity in the region.

Prevention of pollution Pollution prevention describes activities that

reduce the amount of pollution generated by a process, whether it is consumer consumption, driving, or industrial production. In contrast to most pollution control strategies, which seek to manage a pollutant after it is formed and reduce its impact upon the environment, the pollution prevention approach seeks to increase the efficiency of a process, thereby reducing the amount of pollution generated at its source. Although there is wide agreement that source reduction is the preferred strategy, some professionals also use the term pollution prevention to include recycling or reuse.

Clean Water Act of 1972 • The Clean Water Act is the primary federal law in the

United States governing water pollution . Commonly abbreviated as the CWA, the act established the goals of eliminating releases to water of high amounts of toxic substances, eliminating additional water pollution by 1985, and ensuring that surface waters would meet standards necessary for human sports and recreation by 1983.

• The principal body of law currently in effect is based on the Federal Water Pollution Control Amendments of 1972, which significantly expanded and strengthened earlier legislation . Major amendments were enacted in the Clean Water Act of 1977 enacted by the 95th United States Congress and the Water Quality Act of 1987 enacted by the 100th United States Congress

Some Preventive Measures

1) Clean or replace air filters on your air conditioning unit at least once a month.

2)If you have central air conditioning, do not close vents in unused rooms.

3) Lower the thermostat on your water heater to 120.
