How federal gun control started with the National Firearms Act

What is the National Firearms Act? Passed June 26,1934, it was the earliest form of federal gun control
legislation.
A congressional attempt at “fighting crime.”
In order to understand what it is, its history must be understood.
1900s events introduced gun control legislation
Key events prior to the National Firearms Act
World War I was ravishing Europe beginning July 28, 1914 U.S. joined later in 1917.
The Selective Service Act passed and President Wilson signed off on it. More troops were needed. The act drafted 2.8 million men.
The war ended November 11, 1918.
Prohibition precluded the NFA The Eighteenth Amendment passed in 1919.
It came into affect a year later and brought with it prohibition.
It was a failed experiment.
It drove an industry to the black market and lost the government tax revenue.
The Great Depression spurred criminals The stock market crashed on October 29, 1929. Employment rested around 25 percent. Desperate working class turned to making a living off Moonshine. Eighteenth amendment was repealed in 1933, 21st amendment ratified.
The damage was already done, however.
The NFA sparked after disaster Prohibition failed and caused a new class of criminals.
An outlaw culture mixed with economic hardships.
This caused violent incidents like St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. A string of bank robberies and police shootouts occurred. Guns were the scapegoat and received attention.
National Firearms Act effects and targeted weapons It put a $200 excise tax on certain types of firearms and accessories.
Fully automatic weapons Short-barreled rifles Shotguns with barrels less than 18 inches Sound suppressors
$200 then equated to $3500 in 2014
