A crankshaft position sensor helps the engine to keep running smoothly.
![Page 3: How Does A Crank Sensor Work](https://reader031.vdocuments.site/reader031/viewer/2022030316/5872d2ee1a28ab74188b55d7/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
It also measures the position and the rotational speed of the sensor to estimate the exact time for fuel delivery.

Most of the vehicle uses the combination of the crankshaft with camshaft sensor to get a better information on fuel requirement of
the engine.
![Page 5: How Does A Crank Sensor Work](https://reader031.vdocuments.site/reader031/viewer/2022030316/5872d2ee1a28ab74188b55d7/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
The engine control unit uses the information from the crankshaft to control
the timing of ignition and fuel injection.

It helps the engine to maintain all the parts in a well timed manner to deliver a smooth operation of the engine.

Where is the Crankshaft Position Sensor Located?
![Page 8: How Does A Crank Sensor Work](https://reader031.vdocuments.site/reader031/viewer/2022030316/5872d2ee1a28ab74188b55d7/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
The location of crankshaft sensor varies from vehicle to vehicle.
![Page 9: How Does A Crank Sensor Work](https://reader031.vdocuments.site/reader031/viewer/2022030316/5872d2ee1a28ab74188b55d7/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
In most vehicles, it is located on the front underside of the engine.
![Page 10: How Does A Crank Sensor Work](https://reader031.vdocuments.site/reader031/viewer/2022030316/5872d2ee1a28ab74188b55d7/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
In some vehicles, it is found near to the timing
cover.
![Page 11: How Does A Crank Sensor Work](https://reader031.vdocuments.site/reader031/viewer/2022030316/5872d2ee1a28ab74188b55d7/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
In some vehicles, it is mounted at the rear or the side of the
engine.
![Page 12: How Does A Crank Sensor Work](https://reader031.vdocuments.site/reader031/viewer/2022030316/5872d2ee1a28ab74188b55d7/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Sometimes the sensor is mounted to
the bell housing of the transmission.
![Page 13: How Does A Crank Sensor Work](https://reader031.vdocuments.site/reader031/viewer/2022030316/5872d2ee1a28ab74188b55d7/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
If the sensor is near to the transmission, it measures the speed of the clutch flywheel to
determine the speed of the crankshaft.

What are the different types of crankshaft sensor?
![Page 15: How Does A Crank Sensor Work](https://reader031.vdocuments.site/reader031/viewer/2022030316/5872d2ee1a28ab74188b55d7/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
There are 4 types of crankshaft sensor found in vehicles. :- A magnetic pickup coil
:- A hall effect sensor :- A magneto resistive element
:- An optical sensor.
![Page 16: How Does A Crank Sensor Work](https://reader031.vdocuments.site/reader031/viewer/2022030316/5872d2ee1a28ab74188b55d7/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
The magnetic pickup coil, Hall-effect sensor and magneto use metal teeth on the wheel that helps to
create the signals for the ECM to read.

The optical position sensor uses a LED light to send the information to the ECM.

This information is only good for high and low-speed vehicles. If the sensor is dirty, it gives inaccurate information that causes
the vehicle to run poorly.

What are the symptoms of a bad crankshaft sensor?

:- Acceleration problem :- Reduced gas mileage
:- Engine misfire :- Rough Idle
:- Stalling :- Starting problem etc.

Why the sensor fails?

There are few causes that affect the crankshaft sensor. They are

:- Wheel and pin damage :- Magnetic problems
:-circuitry and wiring problems etc.
