From the Principal Easter - The religious celebrations of Easter are considered the most significant of our Christian faith. Throughout this week at school our children and staff are gathering to share and reflect on some of the important aspects of the Easter story. Over Easter our local churches will celebrate these events and you are most welcome to gather, reflect, pray and be renewed by God’s Word. May the risen Christ be with you and your family this Easter season. New Phone System - Thank you for your patience as our school has migrated to the new phone system. I am aware that there are still some ‘teething problems’ with the new system, and we are working closely with the IT staff at the Catholic Education Office to have these sorted as soon as possible. We welcome any feedback you may have to offer. Thank you – to the staff of the school, particularly Miss McLennan and Mrs Starr, for taking on additional roles and responsibilities in my absence over the last two weeks. Mrs Gawne also took on additional administrative duties when the two Assistant Principals attended the Diocesan Leadership Conference last week. During my leave I attended the International Religious Education Congress with 40,000 other Catholic Educators. The calibre of speakers and workshops was absolutely amazing, and the experience was well and truly worth it, as were the visits I made to a number of Catholic schools in the Southern California area. Thank you to you – the community of St Joseph’s Wandal. Throughout Term One, many parents, carers and grandparents have generously supported the school, working in partnership with the staff to provide a positive learning environment for all of our children. Please know that your efforts are deeply appreciated. Newsletter No 10 28 March 2018 How do I love you? Just how was God’s love revealed in Jesus? Firstly, he came and lived among us. How often are you patient when it would be so easy to be annoyed? Yes, these and many other ‘small events’ are the weft and waft of our lives and into them we can weave the passion of love. Over these coming days, when we think on the love shown by Jesus, ponder to on the love we give (and receive) and recognise that here and now in our lives, God wishes to reveal the depths of his love. Loving Father, as we ponder the great love of Jesus in these holy days, let me realise the holiness of the love I offer to my family, friends and community. How do I love you? Just how was God’s love revealed in Jesus? Firstly, he came and lived among us. In our flesh he spent time with us. He loved in a human family, grew up in a community, prayed in the local synagogue. When he went on the road as a preacher, he spent time with people, enjoying their company, accepted invitations to dinners. School resumes on Tuesday, 17th April. Cross Country – The rain held off long enough for us to complete our two Cross Country events this week. Congratulations to every student who ‘had a go’ - the sportsmanship and perseverance we witnessed by our students is to be commended. Mrs Sonya Murphy did a fantastic job of organising and running these events. Thank you Sonya. The overall House points were as follows: 1st place Tenison House on 222 points 2nd place Penola House on 200 points 3rd place MacKillop House on 181 points Winter Uniform – With the cooler weather not too far away I know many of you will be beginning to organise your child’s winter uniform during the Easter break.

· The winter uniform consists of the SJW logo jacket and plain navy tracksuit pants. · Girls may wear navy blue tights. · Long sleeved shirts under uniform shirts are not permitted. · Jumpers and pants with stripes, brands and logos etc. are not permitted. · ‘Hoodies’ are not permitted.

· Once again, a reminder that all students are to wear plain black leather shoes or plain black joggers. Canvas style shoes are not school uniform and should not be purchased by families having to replace school shoes over the holidays. I also take this opportunity to remind parents about appropriate hairstyles for school. If you are unsure whether a particular fashionable style is permitted, then please refer to the Guidelines, or ask the school office for clarification. ANZAC DAY – Wednesday 25 April 2018. * Reminder * We have accepted the invitation for the students of St Joseph’s Wandal to march in the ANZAC Day March and encourage as many children as possible to represent our school at this important commemoration. We ask that the children gather in Alma Street, between Archer Street and Fitzroy Street by 9.20am (the back of Target). The children are to wear their formal school uniform along with their blue school hat. Please ensure that your child has applied plenty of sunscreen before attending the march. Children may carry a water bottle. At the conclusion of the parade, parents are asked to collect their children from right of Alma Street behind City Hall. Our school, under the supervision of Mr Stephen Hunt, will also make a tribute at the Dawn Service with a laying of a wreath. We are looking forward to a strong turnout from the students of St Joseph’s Wandal. Further communication of the march route will be advised when it becomes available. Year 5 & 6 Chromebook Sessions and Fees - A reminder that a compulsory Chromebook Session will be held this afternoon for all Year 5 and 6 students and their parents at 3.30pm - 4.15pm. We thank you most sincerely for your understanding with regards to the delay of these devices and the subsequent rescheduling of this session, Teachers too, have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of the devices. When we ordered these in October of last year, we could not possibly have anticipated the huge delays from the manufacturers and we appreciate that most of you understand that these circumstances were entirely out of our control. We have made the decision to credit Term One’s $25 hire fee and you will see this as a credit on your Term Two statement. An invitation from the Cathdral Parish of St Joseph - You are invited to a Liturgical Ceremony to mark the decommissioning of St Vincent’s Church, Wandal at 5pm, Thursday 5th April, 2018. The ceremony will be followed by sharing of food and the telling of stories. Temporary carpark closure - The church carpark accessed from Meade St will be closed to school use from the 9th of April through to 23rd of April. This closure is necessary for the parish to carry out planned works. Thank you in advance for your cooperation with this temporary closure.

APRE News

This week classes from Prep to Year 6 have led special liturgies in preparation for Easter. Feel free to join us for this most important time in our Catholic calendar.

Friday (last week) Palm Sunday Liturgy – Prep and Year 6 Mark 11:1-11 Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey while crowds of people covered the streets ahead of him with their cloaks and with palm branches.

Monday – Year 2 & Year 1 Last Supper– Luke 22:19-20 Jesus celebrated the Feast of the Passover with his disciples. He gave them bread and said, “This is my body.” He gave them wine and said, “This is my blood.” Then Jesus said, “Do this in memory of me.”

Tuesday - Year 5 Jesus Prays in the Garden and is arrested Liturgy -Year 4 & Prep A Matthew 26:36-50 After the Passover meal, Jesus went with his disciples to the garden of Gethsemane, where he prayed. His disciples could not stay awake to pray with him. Then he was betrayed by Judas and arrested.

Wednesday - Year 4 Crucifixion Liturgy Luke 23:26-47 The Roman soldiers took Jesus and put a crown of thorns upon his head. They beat him and mocked him. Jesus was made to carry his own cross. At a place called Golgotha, Jesus was nailed to the cross and left to die. Jesus prayed when they were crucifying him and said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”

Thursday - Year 3 Resurrection Liturgy Matthew 27:57 – 28:8 The body of Jesus was taken down from the cross and placed in a tomb. Guards where placed outside. Early on Sunday morning, when the women went to the tomb, they found the body of Jesus gone. An angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. Jesus is not here. He has risen, as he said he would.” The

women ran to tell the disciples. Leadership Conference In Kellie’s absence last week Janette and I attended the Leadership Conference held in Rockhampton with leadership team members from all schools in the Rockhampton Catholic Diocese. It was a wonderful opportunity to catch up with colleagues and participate in quality professional development. We had the privilege of hearing David Kirchhoffer, author of “Human Dignity in Contemporary Ethics,” speak about a

Catholic Perspective on the Human Person. Towards the end of the week Janelle Wills presented “Leading Teaching Learning and a High Reliability Schools Framework.” I found the three day leadership conference to be professionally and personally rewarding.

Project Compassion

On Friday last week staff wore shades of purple to raise awareness and much needed funds towards Caritas Australia - Project Compassion. Special thanks to our Year 6 students who sold Jelly cups yesterday with all proceeds going to Project Compassion.

Have a Happy Easter and travel safe!

measurement! We brainstormed ways that we could share our knowledge of
