How Do I Keep My Dog From Chewing?
Dog chewing is a big problem for puppy owners.
Your puppy can end up chewing your:• Furniture• Shoes• Toilet paper• Plants• Etc…
You should know that chewing is normal. Especially for puppies. It is their way of exploring. But it can, and should be controlled.
Chewing can be your puppy’s way of:• Discovering new
things• Releasing pent up
energy and boredom• Relieving pain from
teething
First off:Make your home puppy-proof.
You can start by:• Securing doors and cabinets• Keeping expensive things out of
reach• Using bitter apple spray on
furniture• Storing shoes and toys safely
Next:Keep your puppy as active as possible .
Make sure he uses up his energy by:• Walking him every day• Training him to do tricks• Bringing him to a dog
park• Playing and cuddling
with him• Not letting him be idle
Also:Have a vet check if he is teething.
If he is teething, he is experiencing some pain.
Chewing massages his gums which relieves some of the pain.
It also distracts him from the pain.
You can buy him chew toys to keep him off your other things.
Chew toys are good for training as well.
When your puppy chews on something he shouldn’t be, take it away and give him a chew toy.
This teaches him what he is allowed to chew on.
When he stops chewing on your things, make sure to reward him.
You need to continue training your dog.
When leaving the house, confine your dog in a space where he can play.
Give him his chew toys and make sure he can’t get out.
A crate or a play pen works well for this.
You can also install baby gates in your home to confine him to one room.
Remember:Distraction is the key.
Your puppy’s chewing is normal, so don’t stop him from chewing.
What you should do is redirect his chewing to something else, like a chew toy.
And keep him active so he doesn’t have much energy for chewing.
