Alternative rock music became quite popular in early 2000’s but presently isn’t nearly as large in popularity. It is still quite a popular genre but not as popular as genres such as pop. For my alternative rock magazine to be popular it would have to target the audience that are still interested in this genre of music or are beginning to become interested. The type of the audience that would be willing to buy an alternative rock magazine would be mainly female who are in between the ages of 15-24 and have enough money to be able to buy a weekly magazine.

My Audience

My Artist

The artist I used for my main story works well for alternative because she fits into the alternative rock target audience. She is within the age range that the chosen genre attracts the most and she is female as that is the most popular gender for when it comes to buying alternative rock magazines. The majority of the artists within this genre are quite pale so I made sure that my artist fit into this criteria so that it would be recognisable to an audience. Brown, black, or brightly coloured are also common hair colours within the alternative rock genre so I made sure that the artist that I chose has this hair colour so the alternative rock demographic would recognise it.

Mise-en-SceneThe mise-en-scene for my images is the different outfits, the make up, and the lighting. The lighting was simple due to the fact that it was a simple light from the camera to make sure that the artist would be seen clearly without any major dark spots. The make up consisted of heavy black eyeliner and mascara and purple lipstick. Darkened or red eyes are very common within the alternative rock genre so my artist wore this make up. Red, black, or purple are lipstick colours that the females in this genre are most often seen wearing. The outfits she was wearing were influenced by the other artists within this genre which consists of black skinny jeans, shirt, and boots. The red plaid shirt was heavily influenced by the lead singer of Paramore, the leather jacket was mainly influenced by the lead singer of Green day, and the fingerless gloves were influenced by the guitarist of My Chemical Romance. These are three of the bands that also feature on my magazine as they are the some of the most recognisable bands of the alternative genre.

Live PhotographsBy including several images from live concerts that were performed by bands within the alternative rock genre it would make the audience more interested in knowing more about the concert and buying the magazine to do so. Even if the audience is wanting to go see the band live themselves they would still want to know what it would be like to be there and buying the magazine will give them that insight. Also if the concert looks good enough to the audience then including these photographs would also be helping the artists shown as the audience might buy a ticket after seeing these photographs. Also due to the fact that the competition on the plug is to win concert tickets this would encourage the audience to try and win so they can see a live performance.

Competition

On the plug on the front of my magazine there is a competition which allows the audience a chance to win tickets to a live Green Day concert. The tickets are for Green Day due to the fact that they are one of the most popular bands within the alternative rock genre and are a band that would be easily recognised by the demographic. By including Green Day’s band logo it will make the plug even more noticeable as it shows the image of the band through the logo and also because the colour of the logo makes it stand out against the simple blue background and white text.

Online Website

To make sure that my magazine reaches the more latest population I would need my magazine to have a digital copy as well as a physical copy. The reason that I included a website on the front of my magazine is because it would allow the audience to be able to find versions of my magazine on the internet so that it can read online. The online version would be accessed through the URL that is shown on the front of my magazine and the audience would pay a subscribers fee, the same as paying for the physical copy, and they would be able to read the entire contents of the magazine on their phones, computers, tablets, or laptops.

Other Included Bands

I included other bands on the front of my magazine as well as on the contents page to show the audience the variety of different bands and artists that are going to be available to read about if they were to buy the magazine. If the audience sees that there is an article written about their favourite band or artist within the magazine then that will encourage them to buy it so they can know about their favourite performer. Also the other bands that have been included are some of the most popular bands within the alternative genre which means they are easily recognisable to the audience.
