Dell uses its own Dell Advanced Infrastructure Manager (AIM) to reduce its server requirements for training classes by a projected 50% Benefits • Projected 50% fewer servers required to run ETEC training classes • Estimated 40-fold faster provisioning of server images (approximately 3 minutes vs. 2 hours) • 2 hours a week of IT staff time saved after initial deployment • Potential for hundreds more hours saved annually (up to 90% reduction in infrastructure management time) • Estimated 25-50% reduction in power requirements for servers managed by Dell AIM • Approximately $40,000 cost avoidance on servers to support new classes • Ability to manage resources and workloads remotely AIM Infrastructure Efficiency Power & Cooling Systems Management–Server “Dell ETEC offers several new training classes every year. My assistant and I are maxed out as it is. Dell AIM will change our lives, potentially saving hundreds of hours a year and avoiding the hire of an additional FTE.” Tom Hall, Enterprise Technical Support Advisor, Dell Customer Profile Company: Dell Inc. Industry: Technology Country: United States Employees: 65,000+ Web: www.dell.com Business Need Dell wanted to simplify server provisioning for its Dell Enterprise Technology and Education Center (ETEC), a customer training base for Dell Education Services. Returning servers to a known good state following each training class was taking inordinate amounts of IT staff time, and traditional imaging tools weren’t always reliable. Dell also wanted to reduce the amount of hardware and associated power and cooling resources required to run ETEC. Solution Deploy Dell Advanced Infrastructure Manager (Dell AIM) on 12 Dell PowerEdge servers to decouple workloads from the servers supporting them. Servers can now be reset in minutes, and workloads can be saved for later use, increasing agility and reducing hardware requirements.

Despite the proliferation of more advanced management consoles and widespread use of imaging tools to speed deployment, most data centers still deal with the constraints of a siloed IT environment. Even when each silo is virtualized and management automated as much as possible, that separation inherently increases costs and complexity.

“Using Dell AIM, we can provision all 12 servers approximately in three minutes instead of two hours, just by assigning each server a specific AIM persona.” Tom Hall, Enterprise Technical Support Advisor, Dell
