1. Bug reporting

What will you do when you encounter a bug?


Report the bug to developers

● Bug Tracking System: openSUSE uses Bugzilla– http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/– a web-based tool to manage bugs from reported to resolved

● We need more reporters– to resolve Asian-specific bugs

Just reporting is not enough

There are many abandoned bug reports


What do we have to do so thatthe bug is really fixed?


Write enough information

● Developers can reproduce the bug– Steps to do, expected and actual results

● To understand what is happening– Screenshots, problematic inputs– Backtrace generated by gdb

● Tell the worst case caused by the bug– Security risk– Data loss


Keep to be contacted

● Developers need your help if they cannot reproduce you problem– For example, when necessary environment is not available

● Confirming your bug is resolved is your task– Sometimes reporters have gone away before resolved

sometimes happen while fixing Chinese/Japanese bugs


Inform appropriate developers

● Only limited developers can understand and fix a bug● Find such developer and add them to CC list on Bugzilla

– Might be able to find them from change log● Share your report in public mailing list of the related

community


2. Packaging

Creating packages of applications or libraries so that users can easily install them

● Need Asian packagers to maintain language or region specific applications– Fonts– Input method (for Javanese, Japanese, Chinese, etc.)

● Easy task if you know how to build from source butneed more people to maintain huge numbers of packages

How to update packages by using OBS

● Suppose updating IBus from 1.5.13 to 1.5.14

$ osc branch M17N ibus

$ wget https://github.com/ibus/ibus/…/ibus-1.5.14.tar.gz

- Version: 1.5.13+ Version: 1.5.14

$ emacs ibus.spec

copy ibus from M17N proj. into your online home proj.

get new source code from upstream

modify version number in its spec file

$ osc checkout home:$yourid:branches:M17N ibus

download the copy to your local machine


Build and test the updated package

$ osc build

make build env. and build package

● OBS set up clean virtual build environment automatically

● Now you can find RPM packages in/var/tmp/build-root/openSUSE_Leap_42.1-x86_64/home/abuild/rpmbuild/RPMS/

– Note that you can also install built package from onlineby zypper after “commit”

● Test your package

3. Translation of applications and documents

We need more peoplewho translate applications and documents

into Asian language!


Translation of openSUSE means

● translation of openSUSE's tools– YaST, zypper

● translation of applications on openSUSE– KDE, GNOME, LibreOffice, Firefox, ...– You need to translate and commit to upstream projects

● Upstream first: no special translation for openSUSE

important too!
