Compartmentation ComplianceFor a system installation to be compliant, the

install must have no modifications, assumptions or leniency from the

manufacturer’s product tests.

If the install isn’t a direct replica of the tested prototype, the “Fire Certificate”

at the end of the job isn’t worth the paper it is printed on.

VBA website > Building Practitioners FAQs.

FAQ8. Does the VBA have a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) program?

Victorian Building Authority

No. The voluntary Continuing Professional Development (CPD) program previously administered by the Building Commission is not provided by the Victorian Building Authority (VBA). The VBA encourages building and plumbing practitioners to undertake continuing professional development to maintain the currency of their skills and knowledge,

however, the VBA will not be recording their attendance or results. Practitioners may determine what training opportunities are suitable for them to participate in. Industry associations may also provide assistance with professional development programs and activities.

Penetrations Sealed with TESTED Systems

“The BCA states in C3.15 and NZBC Section C, you must adequately seal any service penetrations passing through a building element with a Fire Resistance Level (FRL) with respect to integrity or insulation or a resistance to the incipient spread of fire. As compliance with Specification may not be practical for your building, following the Deemed-to-Satisfy Provisions is an adequate measure of compliance.”

Compliance can be attained in the form of Tested Systems & Compliance with Specification C3.15.Systems that are identical with a prototype assembly of the service, building element and protection method which has been tested in accordance with AS/NZS 4072.1 and AS/NZS 1530.4 and has achieved the required FRL.Compliance regarding services such as hydraulic, electrical, active fire, mechanical and structural services detailed in the BCA & NZBC.

COMMON FIRE COMPLIANCE ERRORSFoam Fill (PU Foam): It is often incorrectly assumed that it can be used to fill large voids or service penetrations to provide a compliant seal. In all cases, it can only be used in narrow voids or gaps.

Fire Collars:• they should never be fixed

with nylon anchors. • there should not be caulk

covering the intumescent stopping the collar from reacting.

• collar should never be cut or altered from its original shape.

Mechanical Dampers:Should always be connected to duct work with ‘break away joints’ as per AS1682.2 allowing the duct to collapse and not get dislodged in the damper within a fire.
