The Torah teaches that when we harvest our fields we shall not reap all the way to the edges of our fields, or gather the gleanings, or pick our vineyards bare. Instead, we leave the corners of our fields and the falled fruit for the poor and the stranger (Lev. 19:9-10.) Centuries later, the earliest rabbis ask how much produce is in a peah—corner? The answer is that there is no fixed measure. While they consider that peah can depend upon the size of the field, the extent of the harvest and the number of poor, it still comes down to the size of ones heart. Few of us are farmers today, yet it still important and very possible to fulfill the spirit of this mitzvah. We donate to food pantries, soup kitchens and support organizations that fight hunger on several fronts. MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger is one such organization. It has a simple but vital mission: “Through strategic advocacy, education, and partnerships, we take action to impact the lives of millions of people who struggle with hunger.Twice a year—at the High Holy Days and Passover—we make a special appeal for funds for MAZON. Just as there is really no fixed measure for the corners of our fields, there is no fixed measure of support for MAZON. Despite all that we and others do to assure that none of our neighbors go hungry, millions of Americans go to bed hungry each night. It may get worse. According to MAZON, Congress has released a draft of the 2018 Farm Bill. The Farm Bill includes the funding and structure for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). SNAP is the cornerstone of our nation’s nutrition safety net and was crafted by bipartisan Congressional leadership and has worked effectively for over 50 years. If passed as drafted, this year’s Farm Bill will irreparably weaken SNAP, which could cause millions to suffer needlessly. Thinly disguised in the language of “reform,” these proposals would vilify the poor and reduce the number of people on SNAP without regard for the consequences to those impacted by these harsh and severe cuts. MAZON’s Senior Engagement Officer, Rabbi Erin Glazer makes this appeal: “The Jewish community can and must stand up in opposition to these harmful proposals. Jewish text and tradition compel us to honor the dignity of every person, especially those who are struggling. No matter a person’s circumstance, no one deserves to be hungry Your voice matters. Now is the time to speak up.” As citizens who enjoy so many freedoms, we have the opportunity to advocate for those who are so busy earning their daily bread, they may even be unaware of the possible threat to their wellbeing. We not only have the right to speak out against this “reform” but the obligation to do so. Millions of American families’ lives may depend on it. Please pick up a MAZON envelope when you are here or call and we will mail you a few (some for your friends!) Then go to: mazon.org to sign a petition. What’s Inside:

How Big are Your Corners? It has a simple but vital mission: “Through strategic advocacy, education, and partnerships, we take action to impact the lives of millions of people who struggle with hunger.” Twice a year—at the High Holy Days and Passover—we make a special appeal for funds for MAZON. Thinly disguised in the language of “reform,” these proposals would vilify the poor and reduce the number of people on SNAP without regard for the consequences to those impacted by these harsh and severe cuts. At our Special Meeting on April 18, 2018, we the members of BAS voted on one of the most important directions for our congregation. We have agreed to sell some of our land that we have never used. Although we are a congregation busy and alive with fundraising, i.e. Religious school fundraising, Bingo-game and kitchen fundraising, Women of BAS fundraising, Men’s Club fundraising, Special event fundraising and we even have a Fundraising committee that does fundraising! Yet, we have a small congregation. We have new members joining, but not at the rate at which we have members moving away, passing on or deciding not to stay after their child/ren have been a Bar/Bat Mitzvah. All of which make me so sad. Even with all the fundraising we are doing, without raising dues, we would not be able to keep the doors open and the lights on, etc, etc. Selling this piece of property will allow us to invest this money and use the interest to live off of. Isn’t that the way every Senior citizen should live? After all Beth Am Shalom is well into his/her senior years as a congregation Stay tuned to the latest info on this exciting part of our endeavors. Shalom, Arlene Gaona, President

WHAT OUR TEACHER’S ARE TEACHING First let me introduce myself my name is Stacey Friedman, I am the kindergarten first grade teacher. I have been working at Beth Am Shalom for nine years and love every minute of it. Wow what a year it has been these kids have learned a lot throughout the year starting with Rosh Hashanah, where we made cards celebrating the New Year. The kids also got to taste apples and honey. The highlight of the year was our Model Seder where we got together with the second grade and third grade class and the kids got to follow along and participate in the Seder not only was it fun it was educational. Lastly the children learned all about Yom Ha’atzmaut and decorated the Israeli flag. I love being a religious school teacher and inspiring young children year after year. Stacey

As promised here are additional testimonials from members who attended a March for our Lives, on Sunday March 24.

Yvette Atkkins... "I am still "fired up" with so many thoughts about Saturday. The sign I carried began with the words; "This person of faith..." I am a person of faith and Saturday, March 24, 2018 reinforced my faith and hope for the future. From the beautiful beginning of the day, the "spiritual charge" being at the Reform Movement Gathering & Prayer Service, to the March itself and the speakers who inspired. My faith and hope for the future of Reform Jewry was validated by the young men and women who led us in prayer and song. My faith and hope for the future of our country, confirmed, by the young people at the March, who spoke with conviction about their goals, while eloquently honoring their friends whose lives were lost. Every word invoked compassion and reignited my passion to do my part. I will continue to "march" with action, words... Fran Gimpel "It was a wonderful experience that I shared walking with so many like minded people. It was very peaceful. People of all ages participated. I hope we accomplished our goal, universal background check, raising the age to 21 for gun purchases, banning semi-automatic rifles and lowering the capacity of magazines. By the way, I do believe in the second amendment and yes, you definitely can use my name." If we want a sensible application of our Constitution's Second Amendment that takes into account 21st Century realities, we must keep the pressure on. Let our elected officials know what you expect them to do to represent the majority of American citizens who want sensible laws regulating the use of firearms. CEMETERY COMMITTEE Dear Friends, We at Beth Am Shalom are writing you today in regards to our cemeteries, Beth Olam Memorial Park in Lakewood and Toms River Jewish Cemetery in Toms River. As you are well aware, Beth Olam Memorial Park is in dire need of restoration and beautification. Though much has been done to try and maintain this cemetery, it just hasn’t been enough with the limited funds we have. It has been decided that those of us with loved ones buried there deserve a more serene environment. With this in mind, our cemetery committee has moved forward with a more aggressive plan to rejuvenate the grounds:

1.Grave Stones that have sunk below grade level are being raised to ground level. 2.Starting in late September, a fertilization & seeding program will be started. 3.Irrigation system has been fixed and watering times adjusted to meet needs.

The above courses of action are quite costly and will soon deplete our cemetery fund. In order for us to continue to upkeep our cemeteries and maintain the need of our dearly departed…WE NEED YOUR HELP!!! Funds are sorely lacking and the cemetery Committee is asking for your help in accomplishing our goals. We are asking for donations to be made to the cemetery fund, in multiples of $18, chai! These donations can be made on a monthly basis or in one larger amount to be specified to the cemetery fund. It is up to you and up to us to make the cemetery a place to be proud of. Thank you for your generosity.
