The Business & Enterprise Committee

The Business & Enterprise Committee is appointed by the House of Commons to examine the expenditure, administration, and policy of the Department for Business, Enterprise & Regulatory Reform.

Resolved, That Roger Berry has leave to visit Austria to attend an International Parliamentary Forum for the ban of cluster munitions hosted by the President of the Nationalrat of Austria in relation to the Committee’s inquiry into strategic export controls, in a representative capacity.

Draft Special Report (Future of UK Manufacturing: Public Procurement Government Response to the Trade and Industry Committee’s Thirteenth Report of Session 2006–07), proposed by the Chairman, brought up, read the first time and second time, and agreed to.

The Government’s response to the Thirteenth Report from the Trade and Industry Committee in Session 2006–07 was appended to the Report.

Resolved, That the Report be the First Special Report of the Committee to the House.

4. Creating a higher value-added economy inquiry

The Committee considered this matter.

Resolved, That the Committee visit the West Midlands and Scotland in connection with its inquiry into Creating a Higher Value-Added Economy.

Resolved, That the Committee visit the United States of America in connection with its inquiry into Creating a Higher Value-Added Economy and that the Chairman seek the approval of the Liaison Committee for expenditure in connection with the said visit.

Mr Maitland-Walker’s interests were declared as follows:

“I have specialized in UK and EU competition law for many years and have been involved in advising on competition issues in the beer sector since 1982. Legal confidentiality prevents me from listing specific clients, but I can confirm that I have acting for clients representing all parts of the UK beer supply sector including pubcos, brewers and individual pub licensees. My firm continues to act for such clients.

However, I can confirm that we have not been instructed to act for any other organization in relation to the forthcoming inquiry.” (31 October 2008)

Mr Adrian Bailey declared ownership of a cottage in Cornwall from which rental income may be received.

Roger Berry declared that flights, hospitality and accommodation costs during a visit to Syria on the 27 May-2 June 2007 as a member of a UK parliamentary delegation to meet government ministers, parliamentarians and business leaders had been paid for by the British Syrian Society.

Mr Brian Binley declared a remunerated directorship as non-executive Chairman of B.C.C. Marketing Services Ltd, a company which he founded in 1989, and a remunerated office as a member of Northamptonshire County Council. He also declared a registrable shareholding in B.C.C. Marketing Services Ltd.

Mr Lindsay Hoyle declared that flights, accommodation and in-country costs during a visit to Turkey on the 18-22 March 2007 with the All-Party British-Turkish Parliamentary Group had been paid for by the Turkish Government. He also declared rental income received from a commercial leasehold property at Adlington, Chorley and a registerable shareholding in Screen Arts Ltd, a screen printing company.

Miss Julie Kirkbride declared having received remuneration of up to £5,000 for lectures given for the Civil Service College.

Peter Luff declared that on 10 February 2007 he and his wife attended the BAFTA Awards and a dinner as guests of Orange, the mobile phone and broadband operator, and that on the 30 September–6 October 2007 he had visited Hong Kong as a guest of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office to study economic developments there. He also declared a terraced property in Worcester, let on an assured tenancy.

He also declared a flat in London.
