Teams working together to design and produce a robotic arm

    SENIOR SUBJECT SPOTLIGHT

They say team work makes the dream work and this

was certainly the case during Year 8’s DT lessons this

    week.

Teams were tasked with designing and producing a

claw for the bottom of a robotic arm – all within a set

    budget!

A set shopping list of materials was available to pupils

at a cost which meant they needed to agree a budget –

    no mean feat!!

Some incredible designs were on display with all pupils

getting fully involved in producing the mechanism using

all types of tools and materials.

A joy to see such enthusiasm and enjoyment during a

lesson that certainly got the pupils working together

    and using their best skills.

    SPORT SUCCESS

    Ellie (Year 10) qualified for

    the Obstacle Course Race

    World Championships in

    London on the 11th

    October.

She ran 3k on the Friday

    with 34 obstacles,

    finishing by getting over a

15ft wall with only half a

    rope. Amazing!

    Well done to our U13

    rugby boys for their

    spirited game at St

    Clare’s. Our dramatic

    last play score secured

    a 20-20 final score.

    The Sixth Form Mixed

    Netball Team entered into a

    Charity Tournament last

    Sunday raising money for

    Velindre . They were

    runners up losing in the

final by 3 goals! They all

    played really well and are

    keen for more fixtures.

    The total money raised so

    far from the tournament is

    £3000.

A lovely baking activity for the weekend

    CHEF’S CORNER

How to make Chef Iain’s delicious chocolate chip

    cookies!

    Ingredients

1 cup salted butter, room temperature

    1/2 cup granulated sugar

    1 teaspoon vanilla extract

    2 cups all-purpose flour

    2/3 cup mini chocolate chips

    Method

In the bowl of your stand mixer fitted with the paddle

attachment mix the butter, sugar and vanilla together

for 2 minutes. Turn the mixer to low and slowly add in

the flour, mixing until just combined.

Stir in the chocolate chips evenly.

Transfer the dough to a zip-top bag and chill for at least

2 hours. Or, you can roll your dough out now and cut

into shapes, and then chill the dough. Both methods

    are fine.

Preheat oven to 325°F. Line a baking tray with

parchment paper ready for your cookie dough.

Roll dough out into a large square, about 1/3-inch

thick. Cut the dough into shapes using a cookie cutter.

Place on baking sheet and bake for 18-20 minutes.

Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

And voila! Chef Iain is chief taster so be sure to bring a

    sample for him to try!
