The Genre

The History HouseHouse originated from Chicago, Illinois USA during the early 80’s that gradually started to gain popularity within America eventually reaching Europe. House was influenced by the funk and soul varieties of disco. It was influenced by DJ’s who started mixing and editing songs, although some songs were entirely produced by synthesizers and drum machines. Its was considered as an underground genre mainly used in clubs, the term ‘House’ was created due to a club in Chicago called ‘The Warehouse’ where House had been popularized by DJ, Frankie Knuckles, however most claim the term is due to artist being able to create music from their homes. The popularity of House was aided by the newly created cheap synthesizers and drum machines such as the Roland TR-909.

HouseThe Key Artist

There have been many artist who played a part in developing House, right down to the unknown DJ’s to the famous music artist, right from its beginning to present days its still being developed and branching out to form sub-genres. The most notable artists are:

Frankie Knuckles played an important role in the development of House with his works as a remixer and producer.

Jesse Saunders, the first music artist to have a publicly released house song with ‘On and On’. Considered ‘the originator of house music’.

Mike Pickering, A member of T-Coy that released the first UK house tune with ‘Carino’

Daft Punk, mainstream music artist who also started French House.

Crookers, a recent music duo to come into the scene of house.

HouseThe Fans/Audience

House is a genre that most people would assume is just for dance, however there are the minority who listen to it casually. In its early stages the audience and fans were incredibly specific, nowadays the audience is broad but if had to be classified it would be clubbers.

Its initial audience were the African-American and Latin-American communities.

Throughout the years it’s audience expanded to other countries, sprouting fans from Europe

Back then, House is age specific due to it being listened to those who rave, so roughly around 16-40. However nowadays,

it isn’t really used as a genre for raving.

Therefore, with House moving to mainstream music the audience has yet again broadened. It is too vague to provide any specific type of fan or audience.

HouseThe Sub-Genres

House as a genre alone was very basic, as the years passed on, DJ’s and music artists started to explore and create new complex types of sub-genres. As House was introduced to other cultures it started to be experimented on as each culture would add their own style and spin to it. Here is a list of sub-genres created:

•Acid house•Balearic beat •Dark house•Diva house•Euro house•Microhouse

•Progressive house•Electro house•Dream house•Tribal house•Disco house•Vocal house•Hardbag

The PredictionMy Prediction for the future of House Music is that House itself will be gone, there will be too much sub-genres dominate it. With new technology being created and the current mainstream House artist long gone has the original ‘Chicago’ House sound and been replaced. House itself is popular due to current artist such as David Guetta and Ke$ha, but I feel that House is going down a more mainstream approach trying to appeal to a broader audience by implementing other genres into it’s sounds.
