SETTING THE PACE

Ever since the early days of electric lighting OSRAMhas been responsible for milestones in the photo-optical sector with its development of innovativelighting solutions and manufacturing technologies. Its special lamps owe their superiority to dedicatedand pioneering development work and have frequentlyshown the way forward, not only within the industry but also in their particular areas of application.

PHOTO OPTICS DIVISION

The Photo Optics Division was created in October1988 to bring together our various development, pro-duction, sales and marketing expertise. The name waschosen at the time to reflect our involvement in lightingfor classic photography but it hardly does the Divisionjustice today. From specialising in flash bulbs andother “photographic” lamps, OSRAM’s Photo OpticsDivision has now become a problem solver for a greatmany special areas of lighting. Since October 1997,the Division has been organised along internationallines. Development and production now take place atthree sites, namely the USA, Japan and Europe, and all our products are marketed world-wide under theOSRAM name.

PROFESSIONALS IN TOUCH WITH THEIR CUSTOMERS

By concentrating all the entrepreneurial activities of the special Photo Optics sector into a separate international Division we have created the basis for greater speed of service and better customer support. These are absolutely essential if we are tocontinue to operate successfully in this technology-led market. The applications and requirements of ourcustomers are of paramount importance. Projectteams comprising marketing and developmentexperts from Europe, the USA and Asia are createdto develop and implement product concepts forspecial equipment together with our internationalOEM customers – famous-name manufacturers fromthe fields of industrial optics, medical engineering, the photographic industry and chip fabrication, toname but a few.

INNOVATION AS A DUTY

In our efforts to provide products of the highest qua-lity and maintain a technical lead, we place great im-portance in the Photo Optics Division on researchand development. As a result, around 50% of sales isachieved with discharge lamps that have been deve-loped within the last five years.

COOLLower electrical con-sumption, less heat, morelight. These are the attri-butes that are usually mentioned whenever wetalk about fluorescentlamps. Hardly surprising, then, that over the past few years more and morefluorescent lamps havebeen used as studio, TV,film and stage lighting.Fluorescent lamps withtheir high luminous efficacy and low connectedload values are ideal wherever soft area lightingis needed. Cool light insmall studios, backgroundlighting that does not bring actors out in a sweatand luminaires that can be connected to the normal mains supply arejust what lighting professionals have been looking for.

OSRAM MIXES AND MATCHES

Traditionally there have been difficulties in mixing the light from fluorescent

lamps with that from halogen lamps or daylight lamps. OSRAM is taking a

typically pioneering approach to the problem and will shortly be launching

fluorescent lamps that are perfectly matched to the various media and light

sources used in filming and TV work.Whether you normally work with halogen

or daylight lamps, the new OSRAM TVLINE fluorescent lamps can be used

with them without any problem at all. TVLINE lamps are fully dimmable and

retain their excellent colour stability even when dimmed.

Page 6: HOTOOPTIC INSIDE - DJMVIP lamps from OSRAM are used in light valve projectors (video pro-jectors) based on LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) or DMD (Digital Micromirror Devices) technology

OMPACT AND RUGGED:HSR® AND HSD®

In view of their high luminance, HSR® and HSD®

lamps are perfect for lighting equipment thatare fitted with high-quality optical systems.Their applications range from discos to TVshows, from films to stage shows. Whereverthey are used they put the stars and the sce-nery in the right light and create theright special effects. Their ruggeddesign means they are easy to handleand will operate reliably, even innotoriously demanding applicationssuch as effect lighting. This is thanksmainly to their single-ended design, compact dimensions, outer bulb andan internal construction which, thermally and mechanically, is extre-mely robust.HSR® and HSD® lamps complementone another perfectly. Together, theycover a wattage range from 200 W to1200 W. The principal strengths of theHSD® lamp are its extremely long lifeand high luminous efficacy. In addi-tion to the successful HSD® 200 andHSD® 250 lamps, OSRAM can nowoffer a 400 W version – and develop-ment of the HSD® 575 is alreadyunder way. Higher wattages equatedirectly to high luminous flux. In ourtwo new developments we havemade sure that despite achieving“more” light we have maintained thesame high quality of light thatcustomers have come to expect from the HSD® 200 and HSD® 250.

Lamps from the OSRAM family ofmetal halide lamps are all shiningstars with their high luminousefficacy (two to three times asbright as halogen lamps) and theirbrilliant light that’s very close tonatural daylight. They are usedabove all in spotlights and pro-jectors for effect/disco lighting, stage lighting and studio/film/TVlighting.

Long-life HSR® lamps.

A MULTITALENTED

FAMILYC

HSR® lamps are available inwattages from 400 W to1200 W. They are renown-ed for the high quality oftheir light which remainsconstant throughout theirentire life. Because of theirhigh luminance and ruggeddesign these lamps areideal for use in effect light-ing projectors and othersuch equipment.

HSR® lamps: highluminance and

constant quality of light, 400 W

to 1200 W

Page 7: HOTOOPTIC INSIDE - DJMVIP lamps from OSRAM are used in light valve projectors (video pro-jectors) based on LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) or DMD (Digital Micromirror Devices) technology

The light from HMI® lamps is asclose to daylight as you can get. These lamps offer a luminousefficacy of up to 100 lm/W, acolour temperature of around6000 K and a colour renderingindex (Ra) > 90. They aretherefore used mainly for filmand television work – the lowerwattage models tend to be used for news reporting and thelike, while the higher wattagelamps are used in studioproductions. On stage, HMI®

light is being increasingly used for dramatic effect, and moreand more photographers arediscovering the benefits of HMI®

light.

STILL THE BEST

Even now, 25 years after itsinvention, our HMI® light has lostnothing of its shine. Quite theopposite: HMI® lamps wereoriginally developed to providethe first colour televisioncameras with enough light fortransmission, but the daylightcharacter of the light and itsexcellent colour renderingproperties have combined toensure that HMI® lamps areused in more applications thanever before. HMI® lets the sunshine not only in the televisionstudio and on the stage but alsoon film locations and at open-airconcerts and has become firmlyestablished as a high-qualitylight source for large-scale andoverhead projection, underwaterlighting for divers, effect lightingfor discos and many otherapplications. In 1988 an OSCARwas even awarded to OSRAMby the © Academy of MotionPicture Arts and Sciences® forthe development and conti-nuous improvement of HMI®

lamps. This award was, and stillis, an enormous incentive for usto continue our developmentwork on these lamps, whichrange from 125 W to 18,000 W.

The latest newcomer to therange is the HMI® 1200 W/Swhich is squarely in line with thetrend towards more compactlight sources. Lamps fromOSRAM are famous for theirreliability and performance, backed by our many years ofexperience. Our close contactwith leading manufacturersensures that our latest devel-opments at the leading edge oflamp technology will soon beused in new and even betterproducts that have been tailoredto their specific requirements.

TAILOR-MADE TO

MEET THE HIGHEST DEMANDS

VIP lamps are halogen discharge lamps that meet the particular require-ments of multimedia data and videoprojection. They have a number ofspecial features, including:✔ extreme short arc✔ very high luminance✔ long life✔ high luminous efficacy✔ tailor-made colour spectrum✔ optimised reflector configuration✔ ECG operation

VIP lamps from OSRAM are used inlight valve projectors (video pro-jectors) based on LCD (Liquid CrystalDisplay) or DMD (Digital MicromirrorDevices) technology. Their spectraldistribution has been adapted to thecolour filter curves of the projectorsand their service life optimised formaximum luminance and luminousefficacy. These benefits make them

ideal light sources for professional pro-jection applications.

STANDARD VIP AND VIP-P

VIP lamps are available as reflector lamps (“R” models) with elliptical orparabolic reflectors, or as single-ended(“S“) models. VIP lamps of the P gener-ation achieve very high luminance values and very small spreads thanks to their specific filling parameters andvery short electrode gaps. Standard VIPlamps, on the other hand, are based onmore conventional filling systems. Withtheir longer arcs they offer a high degreeof freedom for spectral matching.

With OSRAM lamps, videoprojections are always anexciting experience. Large-screen projections, multi-media presentations and film shows take on a new light thanks to the high lumi-nance, excellent luminousefficacy and long life of thelamps from OSRAM’s VIPfamily. What’s more, they allprovide a spectral distribu-tion that is perfectly match-ed for video projectors. Yetanother highlight in OSRAM’slong line of innovations in the photo optics sector.OSRAM VIP is the perfectchoice for anyone looking for the best possible lightsource for their video pro-jectors.

OSRAM IS PLAYING

A LEADING ROLE

There is harsh competition to providemore and more light, but we would becompletely out of the running if we didnot constantly seek to develop andimprove our halogen lamps. OSRAMhas always set the pace with lampssuch as the high-performance HPL 575 W (specially developed for aparticular spotlight manufacturer) andour latest models, the 64716 (ANSIcode GKV), 64711 (HP600) and 64712(ANSI code FLK), which are suitable fora wide range of spotlights from differentmanufacturers. These spotlights have a number of features in common – lampwattages from 575 to 600 W, ellipsoidalreflectors and at least the sameluminous flux as conventional 1000 Wspotlight systems thanks to lamps withextremely compact filaments and highluminous efficacy from the optimisedblend of filler gases. The latest gener-ation of spotlights produce the sameilluminance from 800 W lamps astraditional systems with 2000 W lamps. Here and for all future developments,OSRAM is just the reliable partner youneed on your side – to assist in systemdevelopments and to supply high-quality lamps.

LESSIS MORE

For some time there has been a clear trend in professional lighting for custo-mers in the stage, studio and TV sectors to demand more and more light from fewer and fewer spotlights. This meansthat more light has to be produced fromthe same lamp wattage, and it also means that the volume and weight of the spotlights have to be reduced. Spotlight manufacturers have responded

to the challenge by equipping theirproducts with high-quality

optical systems. Whereasthe standard combination in the past was a sphericalreflector, vertical lamp anda fresnel lens, we are nowseeing more and moreellipsoidal reflectors, axiallamps and projectionoptics.

HLX® lamps from OSRAM inXENOPHOT® technology are halogenlamps filled with xenon instead ofkrypton. They achieve up to 10%higher luminous flux than conven-tional versions. Their compactfilament geometry produces abrighter, whiter and fresher light thatis so important for projection pur-poses. HLX® lamps are therefore areal alternative to discharge lamps. The optimised filament designmeans the lamps can be operated to achieve either maximum luminousefficacy or long life. This is whyOSRAM’s HLX® family of lampsincludes models that offerextremely high luminous efficacyfor projection and models thatwill last up to 300 hours formedical, laboratory and indus-trial applications.

The new HLX® 64669 offers a luminous flux of more than20,000 lm with extremely high luminous efficacy. This, together with its colourtemperature of 3400 K, makesit the perfect light source foroverhead projection.
