The problem that gave birth to this building was the lack of places where people could spend the night in bidos County. This county is located in the west of Portugals central region and has almost 12.000 inhabitants. Characteristic features of this county are the castle in the old village of bidos, its green landscapes, the lagoon of the Arelho River, its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and the various folk festivals (such as the Chocolate Fair, the Opera Festival, the Christmas Village) all of them performed every year in an old village inside the Castle. However, the county lacks hotel accommodation where tourists can sleep, so the tourists have to travel several miles to nearby counties in order to find a place to sleep. To help solve this problem, and to give bidos County a more prominent place in the national tourism scenario, this hotel was conceived. The place chosen to build the hotel was the parish of Sobral da Lagoa due to its central location in the county and its proximity to the highway that connects Lisbon and bidos. This parish is located on a 100 meter high hill, which offers great views of the county in all directions. Another important characteristic of this parish is the abandoned quarry, where the hotel is, located on the southwest side of the hill. Left by the quarrying are two impressive 100 meter high calcareous walls that create a huge contrast with the sur-rounding vegetation. Since the objective behind the construction of this hotel was to reinforce the importance of bidos County in the Portuguese tourism scenario, the main ideas were to build a tall building, which could be seen from a great distance, and to build a building which had a unique shape, an appealing shape, different from the rectangular plan usually used in hotels. After analyzing the quarry it was easy to understand how deeply human activity had changed and shaped that place. Based on that idea, another idea was born, the idea of creating a building, which would have a rationalized and manipulated shape that would continue the manipulation of that quarry. Accord-ingly, the objective was not to hide the 100 meter high calcareous walls but to make them part of the con-cept. The most important grounds for choosing the shape of the hotel were the link between the public and the private areas of the hotel as well as trying to get as many different views as possible, from the inside to the outside, in all different areas of the hotel.

Concept of the building

There are two different types of rooms in this hotel. It has 8 main rooms 40m2 in size, all the other 112 rooms measure 30m2. The main rooms were superimposed, one per floor, with several vertical win-dows 2.35 meters high to provide unimpeded views in several directions, creating a column 100 meters high, just like the hill. The rest of the rooms were arranged side by side and connected by a corridor 100 meters long. These rooms were divided in two groups, each of with 3 floors. The two groups are called inhabited beams and they connect the 100 meter high column to the slope of the hill. The two inhabited beams are differently positioned, one of them is parallel to the plan view of the column the other one is oblique, so that the two groups of rooms can have different views While the rooms were arranged in height, the public and the staff areas were built at the bottom of the hill, so that access, the reception and the car parking could be next to the main road that passes by, making it easier to reach the hotel. These are all wide spaces, easy accessible for everyone, with wide windows that show how all the different public areas connect with each other and with the quarry. The pool area is the central space of two lower floors, offering lines of sight to the reception, the restaurant, the offices, the interior spa, the gym and the calcareous walls of the quarry. In order to highlight the piece formed by the rooms and to improve the correlation of the lower floors with the site, 10 meter-high concrete walls were created. This made it possible to conceal the access ramps and all the construction on the lower floors. This way, when someone approaches the hotel only the 100 meter high column and two 100 meter long inhabited beams seem to exist. However after following the road that gives access to the hotel and going through the ramps one starts to understand that there is a big structure at the bottom of the hill. Thats when the architectural tour of the building starts. After parking the car and getting to the re-ception, hotel guests will understand how the spaces were arranged and what direction to choose in order to get to the various areas of the hotel because of the smooth windows and the non-existence of doors. In order to emphasize each edge of the column and the beams without utilizing a material, which would be strange or foreign to that environment, the entire building was coated with the calcareous rock from the quarry. This approach made it possible to hide all the different structural materials under the same coating and at the same time to create visual tension because of the two 100 meter long rock beams that are based on the column.

This building can be divided into three parts: lower floors, column and beams, according to the con-struction processes used. To build the lower floors, which contain the car parking, reception, public areas, staff areas, restaurant, spa and pool, a concrete portico method was adopted, comprising columns, beams and slabs all made of concrete. Its also important to note that the car parks green roof is intended to imitate the green area that was in that part of the hill before the hotel was built. On the other hand the roof of the public areas and the staff areas is covered with grey gravel in order to create a color link between the quarry and the rooftop. The 100 meter high concrete column is one of the most important structures used in this building be-cause the two beams are attached to it and because it is responsible for dissipating the horizontal and vertical forces acting on the building. In order to fully resist the vertical forces, both its its own weight and the weight of the two beams, the column is made of concrete. The column was built using sliding formwork, which enabled the same formwork to be used on all the floors. After filling the first floor formwork with concrete and letting it dry, the formwork was hoisted to the second floor, creating a column composed of superimposed floors. One of the most important elements of the column is its foundations. The column rests on a concrete base parallel to a plan view of the column, 3 meters larger on every side and also 3 meters deep. The concrete base prevents the building from moving even if an earthquake occurs. The two beams are also embedded into the hill by means of concrete bases that prevent them from moving. The concrete bases used on the beams are 24 meters high, 12 meters wide and 3 meters deep. Another very important aspect of the column is the points where the beams and column connect to each other. Those connection points are in reality four concrete boxes, each 2 meters high, where the four perimeter beams of each inhabited beam fit. For each inhabited beam, there two concrete boxes, the upper and the lower one. On the basis of concrete boxes there are rails with ball bearings that allow horizontal move-ment of the beams, either because of the natural expansion of materials because of temperature changes or during an earthquake. However, in the event of an earthquake, it is necessary that both beams be fixed so that the building does not get partially destroyed. Therefore, the structural perimeter beams of each inhabited beam have at their end a wedge. These wedges have micro-holes in their sides and are lying in a second box, filled with a liquid lubricant. This allows the beam to move when the steel dilates because of the temperature. However, if an earthquake occurs, the liquid lubricant is unable to pass the micro-holes, holding the beam and giving it sufficient rigidity to withstand the horizontal forces acting on it. Both beams have three floors, which contain the vast majority of the hotel rooms. The first beam and second beam both have a width of 9.6 meters and are, respectively, 110 meters and 93 meters long. Each of the beams has four steel RHS profiles, 0.5 meters across, which are the main structural ele-ments. These profiles are located in the corners of the cross section of each beam and traverse its entire length. These are four profiles, which fit all secondary structural elements, columns, beams and slabs. These profiles are also key factors in respect of dispersing horizontal forces, since they are to a great degree respon-sible for connecting and locking each of the beams to the column and to the hill. The secondary structural elements that function as diaphragms create rings around the four main RHS steel profiles, ensuring the rigidity of each of the beams throughout their long length. The great length of both beams, along with the rooms, led to the diaphragm rings, pillars and beams being spaced 5 m apart, which is the width of each room. However, in addition to the pillars and beams, steel cross trusses are used on the underside of both inhabited beams, which add stability by compressing the main bottom profiles. The metal profiles that constitute the pillars, beams and trusses are also steel RHS profiles but they measure 0.35 meters across. The repetition of elements 5 meters by 5 meters, used for constructing the beams, aided the con-struction process by leading to standardization of the components used and reducing the total construction time, including the possibility of shipping them pre-mounted from the factory and then bolting and welding them together.

I m a Portuguese archi tect that recent ly concluded my Masters Degree in archi tec-

ture at Faculdade de Arqui tectura de L isboa. I have a huge interest for the l inks between

archi tecture, engineer ing and f ine arts, which led me to choose as my graduat ion theme

Structures as e lements of the archi tectura l d ia log.

There are severa l aspects that contr ibute to the fact that I m a good worker, a good

th inker and a good creator. The sol id set of sk i l ls that I acquired dur ing the 5 years course

now al low me to work under pressure, to meet deadl ines, and to fu l ly present you my

ideas. As an archi tect I use severa l technics that go f rom hand drawing, to CAD, bui ld-

ing models, creat ing 3D models, combin ing a l l the in format ion based on a logica l and

chronologica l way and in the end on exposing them through paper sheets or computer

presentat ions with great f i rmness and object iv i ty.

Beside the hard sk i l ls that I show on my CV there are other soft sk i l ls that I got f rom

sports, one of them is teamwork. The fact that sa i led, that I competed and even repre-

sented Portugal at the European Championship, shaped me and made me hardwork ing,

persever ing and focused in everyth ing so that I could help my team to reach the number

one place. Hard winds used to scare me and extremely soft winds used to make me lose

my concentrat ion in my f i rst couple of years as a sa i lor. Later on I d iscovered both of them

were my best teachers.

I ve had var ious chances to t rave l and I took a l l those opportuni t ies because I con-

s ider i t as the best way to acquire cul ture and to understand the b ig p lanet we a l l l ive

in. I a l ready v is i ted great part of Europe dur ing my one month InterRai l and because of

severa l other t r ips I ve done. I ve a lso been outs ide Europe two t imes, one in Austra l ia

and another one in Braz i l , Uruguay and Argent ina, dur ing a univers i ty student exchange

program that took 7 months. These t r ips made me want to grow my inte l lect and learn

f rom new exper iences and to gather more knowledge about the conceptual thoughts and

technica l aspects behind a lot of th ings I saw, whether they were paint ings, sculptures,
