PRESIDENT’S REPORT April was a good month of historic motoring !

Alan and Jill attended the Studebaker National at Toowoomba in April, celebrating the 60th anniversary of

the Lark; Ken Trethewey and I, along with John Rickett riding shotgun, attended the Jaguar National at

Wodonga; members of our club attended the South West Get Together hosted by the Goulburn Historic &

Classic Car Club; the Ballards headed over to Katanning W.A. in their Citroen for the annual Citroen Clubs

get together over Easter, celebrating 100 years of Citroen automobiles.

We have spread ourselves around quite a bit since last report.

Closer to home, we had a good turn out on Good Friday for our Hot Cross Bun Run morning tea at

Wallendbeen, where we also bid farewell to Col and Trish Stewart. They are taking some mementos from

the club to their new home in Albion Park:

The Anzac Day veterans enjoyed a ride, leading the Anzac Day March to the Cenotaph, in a Humber Super

Snipe, a Riley 2.5 and a Mk 5 Jaguar. There was also an aeronautic treat with the flyover of a Rolls Royce

V12 Spitfire, courtesy of the Temora Aviation Museum.

For May - It was a beautiful day for the Frank DeBritt run for the Southern Cross Care Retirement Village

residents. The drive, via Old Gundagai Rd and Cullinga Rd to Wallendbeen, and return, was an hour’s

country roads drive, followed by a splendid afternoon tea at Stephen Ward rooms.

Thank you to Joan for facilitating the arrangements, and Barry for organising the newspaper publicity.

When our club provides a service for people in the community, it is appropriate to have some photos and

description in the local newspaper.

Another beautiful autumn day was spent at Tierney Street Model Railway in Young, where Temora club

provided an amazing spread for morning tea, and our club cooked a BBQ lunch. It was a good get- together,

hosting the Riverina Sports Car Club who were visiting our region.

Again the following weekend was another enjoyable get- together occasion with Gundagai Club at Margaret

and Allan Schutz’s Tierney Street and at Peter and Bev Kinsela’s small gauge railway. Thanks to all

concerned.

Coming up in May is the ‘biggy ’ as far as I’m concerned, and that is Winton Historic Races weekend.

Perhaps it is not just me who thinks this is the ‘biggy’, as this year we have 20 members looking forward to

the trip to Winton. Looking forward to it indeed! (A report will be in my next President’s Par.)

Our monthly meetings have been very well attended ; it is good to see the interest shown in events and the

ongoing success of the club - your club.

Yours with Grace, Space and Pace,

Mal

P.S.

Recently at the Temora Aviation Museum, John Rickett and I entertained a group who came in 42 ASTON

MARTINS. They ranged from some early DB 4 s, (worth around $1.5 million each), to current models,

some less than 2 weeks old.

At a conservative estimate, there would have been $12 million worth of cars parked next to the

Mk 16 SPITFIRE for impressive photographs. I hope to include a photo in July magazine.

NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT :

As well as mechanical things, words interest me. I believe that if there is just one word in a sentence that I

don’t understand, then that sentence lacks its true meaning. When I come across a word, I have to look it up

in my trusty dictionary and most times things become clear, but there are exceptions. Here is a good one:

Recently the word ISENTROPIC was used several times in a TV science show. I didn’t know the meaning,

so I looked it up.

ISENTROPIC — without change in entropy ; at constant entropy.

Still not clear, so what’s entropy ?

ENTROPY - a measure of the capacity of the system to undergo a spontaneous change thermodynamically,

specified by the relationship

dS = dQ / T where dS is an infinitesimal change in the measure for a system absorbing an infinitesimal

quantity of heat dQ at thermodynamic

temperature T. ; the tendency of a closed system, including that of the universe itself, to become less

available to do work with the passage of time; A measure of the randomness, disorder or chaos in the system

specified in statistical mechanics by the relationship S = KinP+C, where S is the value of the measure for a

system in a given state, P is the probability of an occurrence of that state, K is the BOLTZMANN constant

and C is an arbitrary constant.

Still a bit muddy ? Better look up Boltzmann constant.

BOLTZMANN constant - The ratio of the universal gas constant to the AVOGARDO constant with the

value of 1, 380622 x 10 to the power of - 23

joules per Kelvin - (LUDWIG BOLTZMANN 1844 - 1906.)

So far so good, so what is the AVOGARDO constant ?

AVOGARDO constant - The number of molecules in one mole of a substance approximately 6.0225 x 10 to

the power of 23. (AMADEO AVOGARDO 1776 - 1856. )

I have to admit I am still not 100 % clear on the meaning of the word, ISENTROPIC. Maybe that is why I

am a mechanic ! Nevertheless, I think it is a great word, and I hope to be able to use it intelligently - some

day .

One thing I have learnt from this exercise however, is crystal clear. All this was formulated hundreds of

years ago, without computers, calculators or even a slide rule. Maybe they had an abacus, but that’s all.

Nowadays, if the computers shut down at Woolworths, no one can calculate your grocery bill or change.

I’m off now to my trusty dictionary again, this time to look up another word I am not sure of - that word is

PROGRESS.

A SPECIAL BIG NATIONAL RALLY FOR OUR VEHICLES

will be held at Albury in 2020. It will be a 7 day rally, called the “ 2020 National Historic Motoring Festival”.

The Australian Historic Motoring Federation invites all clubs in Australia.

It is in ten months’ time - Saturday 28 March to Friday 3 April.

It is anticipated that 900 vehicles will enter. Clubs from all over Australia are now planning a touring holiday to Albury.

As this event is “on our doorstep” it warrants our attention.

Work out the costs of a 7 day holiday at Albury. Book accommodation at Albury as soon as possible.

Then enter for the rally - on the website: www.ahmf.org.au/2020Tour.

STUDEBAKER NATIONALS – at TOOWOOMBA

The Studebaker National Meet was held over the Easter weekend in Toowoomba, Queensland.

Jill and I, in our ’61 Lark, left Cootamundra the Monday before Easter heading via Cowra, Gulgong and

Merriwa towards the New England Highway. We took this route so we would go through Tenterfield to

visit, and stay with, our eldest grand daughter who is a High School teacher there.

We arrived in Toowoomba on the Thursday afternoon and booked into our motel.

The program followed the familiar pattern of meet and greet Thursday night. Parts sales, registration and a

dinner on Friday. Saturday was a concours and vehicle display, and dinner with an auction.

Sunday was a drive around the local area, visiting some very interesting automotive and transport locations,

including the Cobb & Co Museum.

The weekend ended with farewell morning tea on Monday, and we headed for home.

Our drive home was via a more inland, and flatter route, through Goondiwindi, Moree, Narrabri, Dubbo,

Grenfell and home. Total distance travelled was about 2500 Km.

The Lark went well except that it started pumping oil out of the automatic transmission. Looks like some

major repair work has to be done!

Even though we had some vehicle problems, we had a great time meeting up with our Studebaker friends

and visiting different places. The next Studebaker Nationals will be held in two years’ time in Geelong,

Victoria.

Toowoomba, Easter, 2019.

Steph Cooke, MP for Cootamundra, being convinced by Alan Thompson

to support our need of the TAFE facilities. She was a breath of fresh air

talking about how lucky we are having these useful facilities.

She also mentioned that other clubs should use TAFE facilities.

17 May – Cootamundra club cars

Lined up on the Run to Winton Raceway:

John Mackie is restoring an amphibious Jeep. Shed space? Hang the newly restored keel from the rafters.

Don Manwaring got his International out for the Tractor Pull at the Biennial Machinery Rally, Saturday 27 April, 2019.

Surprise! A bird’s nest between the radiator and the fan. Unharmed by the fan, Don left the nest there to show at the rally.
