PRESIDENT’S PAR

Well, What’s happened since our last magazine ?

During the last few weeks we have had the VSCCA Sprints at the airport - with the usual selection of

exciting vintage and post vintage sports cars. Our Graeme Snape, I believe, showed the way in his Zephyr

racer. Some of our members attended and enjoyed the event.

The Armstrong Siddeley Centenary Rally in Canberra was attended by Hugh McMinn, and John Collins,

although I believe Hugh’s Hurricane wasn’t with him at the time ! [Broke down !]

Ken Trethewey and I, with John Rickett riding in style, visited the Jaguar Nationals in Wodonga. I’ve had

Jaguars for many years but that was the first National I have attended. Some very nice cars, way out of my

reach ! [In the background of this pre-war SS is Ken, Mal and John. The number plate tells it all.]

Following this was the Young Car Muster ; Peter McCarthy’s Simca, KevinWhite’s Vauxhall,

and Denis Shepherd’s Morgan represented our club at this event.

Recently we had the South West Get Together in Goulburn, which I will describe further, below. So this

month has been quite busy .

On a sad note we are losing Col and Trish Stewart, who have been stalwart members of our club, with their

green Morris Minor Woodie, and the black Morris Minor sedan - affectionately known as ‘The Clown’ –

And which has towed a caravan around Australia!

We will miss them; and wish them all the best for their future in Albion Park Rail.

The cooler, lovely Autumn weather is here, so dust off your Classic and join in!

Yours with Grace, Space and Pace,

Mal.

P.S.

In the very early days, motoring enthusiasts were described as “Autocarists”, “Chauffeurs” or even

“Autoneers”.

A name was needed for this ‘newfangled’ engine - driven device we now call a motor car.

The popular French term, “automobile”, which is now common place, was not liked in America. (!)

In fact the New York Times in January 1899, wrote the following: ‘ There is something uncanny about these

newfangled vehicles. They are unutterably ugly and not one of them has been provided with a good or

endurable name. The French, who are usually orthodox in their etymology, if nothing else, have evolved

‘automobile’ which being half Greek and half Latin, is so near to indecent - that we print the word with

some hesitation ! !’

The South West Get Together : This was held this year in Goulburn on Sunday 7th April.

Some members of our club travelled down on the Saturday to add a couple of events to the weekend,

prior to Sunday’s Get Together.

The first event - in the morning - a visit to the old Goulburn Water Pumping Station where we were

given an excellent tour of this wonderful old building and its contents by Tom Marmont, a member of the

Goulburn Historic Car Club. Thank you Tom.

The Pump house contains a magnificent steam driven Beam Engine, covering three stories in height ! The

fly wheel weighs 12 tons and the beam weighs 7 tons. This engine, which once pumped Goulburn’s water

supply from the Wollondilly River, is still in fine working condition and is steamed on a regular basis. If

you have not seen this, I really recommend it. It’s a wonderful piece of history.

Our club’s cars in the Goulburn Pumping Station car park.

XJS, XK140, Triumph, and ’58 and ’61 VWs.

Lunch was at the Paragon Cafe, where we were joined by some members of the Gundagai Club and the VW

Club.

The second event - In the afternoon we drove to Land Rover Heaven, where the old Sahara Land Rover ,

which we once owned - now resides.

The owners, David and Janelle D’Arcy , have a huge collection of Land Rovers, including very early

models, one of which - a 107 Series 1 Station Wagon - was driven across the Sahara by a young couple,

Jinx and George Rodger. Jinx is still alive in England at 97 years old. Dave and Janelle D’Arcy had just

visited her to get her story, which they also discovered is printed in an old National Geographic Magazine.

They have lent us the edition to read.

Lin and I were also interviewed by Land Rover International Magazine for our Sahara crossings story.

Malcolm Chaplin and Richard Amery in LandRover Heaven. There’s more outside:

The next day’s Get Together in Goulburn was preceded by a Swap Meet. So with the extra hour afforded to

us ( the end of Daylight Saving) we perused the Swap Meet. It was quite comprehensive with all the usual

trappings, but for me a Swap Meet rarely has the bits and pieces that I am looking for .

Sunday’s Get Together, was held at the Poidevin Rugby Oval, an excellent venue with a large

comfortable club house and plenty of shade trees. The clubs attending were:

Seized Nuts Car Club (2 cars) (seriously!)

Inner West Car Club (1 car)

Grenfell Car Club (3 cars)

Gundagai Antique Motor Club (5 cars)

Goulburn Historic & Classic Car Club (30 cars)

Goulburn V & V Car Club (3 cars)

Young Heritage Motor Club (4 cars)

Wagga Classic Motoring Club (1 car)

Riverina VW Club (2 cars)

Club Vee Dubb (1 car)

Cootamundra Antique Motor Club (7 cars)

As is the case, everyone walked around

photographing, praising or criticising according to opinion, but for me the stand out car of the event was a

1936 RILEY Falcon:

Shortly after lunch, representatives of the various clubs were called to discuss the host club for next year’s

get together. After an ‘executive meeting’ of Collins, Thompson and Chaplin, - - - - - - - our club will

host the SW Get-Together next year.

(There wasn’t much competition - in a one horse race , first place and last place are the same. )

Thank you to Goulburn for a successful event .

On the way home, Tretheweys and Chaplins swapped our Jaguar cars for a few kms. While our XJS is a

great touring car, powerful and comfortable, I found the XK 140 is a proper motor car !

Wish, wish, wish , thanks Ken.

A BIG NATIONAL RALLY FOR OUR VEHICLES

will be held at Albury in 2020. It will be a 7 day rally, called the 2020 National Historic Motoring Festival.

The Australian Historic Motoring Federation invites all clubs in Australia.

As this event is “on our doorstep” it warrants our attention.

Work out the costs of a 7 day holiday at Albury. Book accommodation at Albury as soon as possible.

It’s in 11 months’ time – Saturday 28 March – Friday 3 April, 2020.

It is anticipated 500 to 700 vehicles will enter; and clubs from all over Australia are now planning a touring holiday to Albury.

Information about the Festival is on the website: www.ahmf.org.au/2020Tour.
