On The Trail of Those Damn Black Hats

Weekend with Lance Herde-Ed Bearss is a former Marine, serving in the Pacific in WWII and is the nation’s foremost battle-field tour guide. The Chief Historian Emeritus of the National Park Service, he is the author of several books and articles on the Civil War. He has been a featured commentator on Ken Burn's PBS documentary “The Civil War,” the History Channel, and C-Span. Ed has been a mainstay of the Chambersburg Civil War Semi-nars & Tours since our founding in 1989.

Dennis E. Frye is the Chief Historian at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. He has appeared numerous times as a commentator on PBS, The History Channel, The Discovery Channel, and A&E. Dennis is the author of more than 77 articles and seven books. His latest is September Suspense: Lincoln’s Union in Peril.

George F. Franks III is the author of Battle of Falling Waters 1863: Custer, Pettigrew and the End of the Gettysburg Campaign. Franks is a Navy veteran and business consultant. He owns the historic Donnelly House on Falling Waters Battlefield where General Pettigrew was mortally wounded and is currently involved in efforts to pre-serve the battlefield.

Perry Jamieson is a retired historian with the Department of the Defense and the author of numerous books on the Civil War, tactics and other aspects of military history such as Attack and Die: Civil War Military Tactics and the Southern Heritage, co-authored with Grady McWhitney. His other works include Crossing the Deadly Ground: United States Army Tactics, 1865-1899 and Death in September: the Antie-tam Campaign.

Tom Huntington has authored many books on the Civil War and America’s history.

Most recently, he published Searching for George Gordon Meade: The Forgotten

Victor of Gettysburg. Huntington has also written articles appearing in American

Heritage, Smithsonian, Civil War Times, and other publications.

Wayne Motts is the CEO of the National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg. A licensed

battlefield guide at Gettysburg National Military Park, he is the former director of the

Adams County Historical Society and is the author of several works including a biog-

raphy of Confederate General Lewis A. Armistead.

John Michael Priest is a retired high school history teacher and has written exten-

sively about the Civil War. His latest work is Stand to It and Give Them Hell: Stand to

It and Give Them Hell: Gettysburg as the Soldiers Experienced It from Cemetery

Ridge to Little Round Top, July 2, 1863. Priest has appeared on the Discovery Chan-

nel and is one of the historical consultants for the forthcoming mini-series,

To Appomattox.

Richard Sommers teaches at the U.S. Army War College and recently retired after four decades as the senior historian at the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Cen-ter. He is the author of numerous publications including Richmond Redeemed now available in a revised edition. He has also been a commentator on C–Span and The History Channel.

Lance Herdegen is the leading authority on the

Iron Brigade. Herdegen is a historical consultant

for the Civil War Museum of the Upper Mid

West and has written numerous books on the

Iron Brigade including the critically acclaimed

The Iron Brigade in Civil War and Memory.

Herdegen has authored many other titles includ-

ing Those Damn Black Hats: The Iron Brigade

in the Gettysburg Campaign and The Men

Stood Like Iron: How the Iron Brigade Won its

Name. Herdegen is also a retired reporter and

editor for the United International and returns to

Chambersburg Civil War Seminars & Tours by

popular demand.

Tom Clemens earned his doctoral degree at George Mason University, where he

studied under Maryland Campaign historian Dr. Joseph L. Harsh. Clemens has

published a wide variety of magazine articles and book reviews, has appeared

in several documentary programs, and is a licensed tour guide at Antietam Nation-

al Battlefield. A retired professor from Hagerstown Community College, he

also helped found and is the current president of Save Historic Antietam Founda-

tion, Inc. Clemens is the editor of the two volume Maryland Campaign by Ezra

Carman.

Gordon Dammann is a member of the Chicago Round Table and the Illinois

Historical Society along with other organizations. Educated at the Loyola School

of Denistry, he has served as a U.S. Army Dental Corps Captain as well as a

combat medic in Vietnam in 1970. Dammann was a recipient of the Nevins-

Freeman Award of the Chicago CWRT and the Iron Brigade Award of the Milwau-

kee CWRT. He is also a chairman and founder of the National Museum of Civil

War Medicine.

Joe Mieczkowski is a Civil War living historian and educator. Having received

his Bachelor’s Degree from Salem College and his Master’s Degree in Public

Administration from Pennsylvania State University, he spent 37 years working with

the Social Security Administration. Mieczkowski is a past president of the

Gettysburg CWRT, licensed battlefield guide for the Gettysburg National Military

Park, a past president of the Gettysburg CWRT, and the author of the book Lin-

coln and his Cabinet.

Dan Welch is the Education Programs Coordinator for the Gettysburg Founda-tion, the non-profit partner of Gettysburg National Military Park. He has also worked as a seasonal park ranger for the park leading numerous programs on the campaign and battle. Most recently, Welch participated in the Gettysburg National Military Park’s special 150th Anniversary programs as well as the annual Mid-Winter Lecture series.
