We know travel can be tiring. So, when you’re on the road in a foreign place with A&K this is your chance to take a step back, breathe and experience the destination at your own pace. Explore your surrounds at will, stroll through the back alleys of a small village, discover an authentic eatery, shop for a special memento of your visit… Each of our journeys gives you guaranteed time at leisure so you’ll come home refreshed and energised. For example, travellers to the Pushkar Camel Fair in Rajasthan (page 46) have a full day on their own to explore the fair, taking in all the colour and theatre of this extraordinary event with outstanding photographic opportunities.
Shiraz in Iran (page 40) is the city of roses and nightingales and when you’re there a day at leisure is all yours to trawl the labyrinth of stalls at the 11th century Vakil Bazaar. Seek out spices, Persian rugs, handmade copper pieces, antiques, sweets and much more.
Guests visiting Japan (page 32) have time at leisure in Tokyo where a stroll through the Hamarikyu Garden is a perfect way to spend a lazy afternoon. Or hit the streets and take the subway on an urban adventure.
On our journey to Georgia (page 26), take a break in the sleepy town of Kazbegi where your accommodation is in a hip new design hotel whose terrace offers the perfect place to while away an afternoon, glass in hand gazing at Mt. Kazbek, the seventh highest peak in the Caucasus Mountains.
BREATHE THE A&K WAY
12 | Hosted Small Group Journeys 2017 - 2018
SAVOUR THE A&K WAYEssential for most discerning travellers are the multitude of exciting dining experiences available in a destination. For your maximum enjoyment, we’ve included a range of opportunities so you can dine like a local with a local. From 'paddock to plate' restaurant cuisine and Michelin star fare to wholesome organic food served al fresco, home cooking in a farmhouse and street food experiences, we’re serving up an authentic range of epicurean delights so you can treat your taste buds to a variety of cuisines and culinary highlights.Inventive, fresh and flavoursome, New Nordic cuisine is at its best in Iceland and you’ll enjoy a fine sample of it when you visit Reykjavik’s (page 20) finest fish restaurant Sjavargrillid for an evening of seafood indulgence.
Oaxaca (page 62) is Mexico’s culinary capital, and when you’re there we’ll introduce you to a local family where you’ll learn about traditional ingredients and taste some regional delicacies such as mole washed down with a drop of mezcal.
Often referred to as Little Tibet, Ladakh (page 50) has been strongly influenced by Tibetan culture, and when you’re there we’ll organise the unique opportunity of a traditional Tibetan Hotpot.
In the oasis town of Kashgar in far western China (page 30) the cuisine identifies more with the Middle East than China and you’ll dine with a local Uighur family on such delicacies as char-grilled meat, spices, eggplant and rice pilaf.

14 | Hosted Small Group Journeys 2017 - 2018
MOVE THE A&K WAYMuch of our touring is done by road to maximise the time spent in a destination, but seeing things at ground level gives a different and more intimate perspective. So, on all our journeys we’ve included an active element so you can stretch your legs and get up close to special attractions. Though none of the journeys would be considered extreme, there are varying degrees of activity from a glacier hike to walking up sand dunes, a stroll through the bazaar, horse riding, sleigh rides and much more. For example, visitors to Mongolia (page 28) will explore the Gobi Desert on Bactrian camels, native to the Central Asian steppe, also providing the opportunity to meet local camel breeders for an insight to their way of life.
Our journey to Italy (page 24) is a dedicated walking tour through some of the breathtaking countryside of Puglia and Amalfi. Walks are between 5 and 8km daily and we recommend a reasonable level of fitness.
Patagonia (page 72) is an adventure destination of the first order with outdoor activity aplenty. At The Singular Patagonia, guests have the choice of a wide range of excursions from hiking and horse riding to cycling, kayaking and fly fishing.
On our journey to Iceland (page 20), guests have the unique opportunity of hiking into the heart of the country’s second largest glacier, Langjokull, through a manmade ice tunnel.

Because we know it’s not enough to skim the surface of a destination, we take you behind the scenes in the destinations we visit with some one-of-a-kind encounters. These are opportunities for you to discover a local skill and meet the artisans at work, visit a private museum or gallery after hours, meditate in private with a monk, or meet villagers in an exclusive cultural interaction. In the Caribbean city of Cartagena (page 66) we take you on foot to some of the haunts of Colombia’s most important writer, Gabriel García Márquez. See his former residence, the corridor of candy, the shoeshine boys and a local salsa bar – all sites which feature in his works.
Travelling to West Africa (page 52) is an exciting encounter in itself but we take you deeper when you visit a remote village in Togo to attend a traditional tribal voodoo ceremony.
On our journey to Central Asia (page 36) there’s an exclusive visit to the Arkadash stud farm, home of the famous Akhal-Tekke horse, one of the oldest breeds in existence well known for its stamina.
Guests travelling on our winter journey to Norway (page 22) have a fascinating introduction to the Sami reindeer herders, taking a sleigh ride through the snow and dining with a local family in their traditional Sami tent.

One of the key features of our Hosted Small Group Journey portfolio is your host. On each one you are joined by an A&K Local Host. This person knows the destination intimately, has strolled the same streets you’ll stroll, knows the stall holders in the local market, the best galleries and eateries, a prime viewing spot for a festival and can speak the local lingo. The companionship of a local host means you see the place you are visiting through their eyes and with their passion. It ’s a life-changing experience.
In addition, on certain journeys, you are joined by a Guest Host. This individual has specialist expertise in the place you are visiting, the wildlife you are seeing or the cultures you’ll be experiencing. They have travelled extensively and are charismatic companions whose passion it is to share their knowledge with you - the enquiring traveller.

JOURNEY HIGHLIGHTS
This exclusive journey delivers you to the cool climes of northern Europe where one of the world’s most stunning visual experiences awaits – the Northern Lights. Best seen during the winter months when the temperatures are low and the night sky is clear and black, the Aurora Borealis lights up the sky in varying shades of green, pink and blue sending out an eerie otherworldly glow. Subject to weather conditions there are myriad opportunities outside of Reykjavik of seeing this incredible phenomenon. Not only do the Northern Lights create great drama but so too the country’s incredible landscapes. On this journey you’ll see the highlights of Iceland’s southwest with its dramatic fjords, mountains, volcanoes, geysers and waterfalls as well as the scenic attractions of the South Shore.

JOURNEY HIGHLIGHTS
Few places on earth offer more ways to witness the Aurora Borealis than Norway and during the long winter nights this extraordinary phenomenon of coloured lights dancing across the dark sky occurs. Sighting of the Northern Lights is completely weather dependent but on this journey you are spending more than three nights above the Arctic Circle which means chances are very good. You are also introduced to the fascinating Sami people of northern Norway whose traditions include reindeer herding and fishing. Exhilarating sleigh rides through magical snow-covered terrain are a highlight as well as the little known Lofoten Islands which are a rare wilderness outpost of majestic landscapes, seabird colonies and surf-swept beaches.

The museum library houses more than 3,000 volumes highlighting the history of paper making, an ancient art for which Amalfi is renowned. JOURNEY HIGHLIGHTS
The ancient Silk Road was a network of overland trade routes that linked China with the Mediterranean. For a thousand years or so, merchants made the journey with caravans of camels loaded with rubies, jade, metals, amber, musk and of course silk. From Beijing, our adventure starts in earnest in Dunhuang, the last stop for caravans to rest and replenish before facing the inhospitable desert beyond. We traverse this vast hinterland of Asia, the rugged and desolate landscapes and once-flourishing oasis cities and trading outposts. Visit sites important to both the Buddhist and Uighur culture and explore the cities of Urumqi, Turfan and Kashgar - names that have captured the imagination for centuries.

Next, visit the 18th century Emin Minaret built of brick and designed in the style of Iran’s pre-Savafid architecture. Sandwiched between a towering mountain range and the Taklamakan desert, Turfan has thrived since the 1st millennium BC mostly thanks to a monumental water irrigation system which you’ll visit today. The Kerez is a series of huge underground wells and channels which collected glacial melt from streams and rivers to form the oasis. After lunch, transfer to the airport for a flight to Kashgar. Located in the far west of the country, Kashgar is the last great oasis town before reaching the Pamir Mountains of Central Asia. It has been a trading centre for millennia and despite a period of rapid development still retains its old spirit. Uighur craftsmen and artisans still hammer and chisel away in side alleys, traders haggle over deals in the bazaars and donkey carts trundle through the streets. Stop at Handicraft Street, home to hundreds of stalls selling folk handicrafts before arriving at the hotel (B,L,D). Yue Xing Jin Jiang International Hotel (Executive Room)
Day 8: Kashgar. The first stop today is the Afaq Khoja Mausoleum, one of the finest examples of Islamic architecture in the Xinjiang region. Continue by local transport to the great Sunday Market. In short, it is a vast, all-encompassing marketplace that reaches fever pitch on a Sunday when thousands of buyers descend upon the city from the vast network of surrounding oasis towns. This afternoon, visit the Id Kah Mosque and wander through old Kashgar where there are still remains of the old Uighur city and its Turkic traditions. Savour: Join a local Uighur family in their home to enjoy the traditional sweet tea and dried fruits favoured for honoured guests (B,L,D). Yue Xing Jin Jiang International Hotel (Executive Room)

MEET OUR GUEST HOST DR. CHARLIE GARDNER
Charlie has worked as a scientific advisor for WWF and has published many papers on
Madagascar’s wildlife and its conservation. He has appeared on wildlife documentaries and assisted with the filming of Sir David Attenborough’s BBC
series ‘Madagascar’.
Curious and other-worldly, Madagascar is full of surprises and extraordinary creatures. It has people, wildlife and landscapes found nowhere else on earth and a culture far removed from any of its near neighbours. On this fascinating journey, you’ll explore the island nation and its flora and fauna with a wildlife expert who knows the destination and its inhabitants like the back of his hand. Still largely untouched by tourism, you’ll be dazzled by Madagascar's rainforests, clear blue seas, white beaches and spiny forest habitat.
