What is a Capstone Course? A capstone course is a course designed to provide opportunities for students to integrate knowledge from their core and concentration courses, to gain insight into the meanings of professionalism and professional practice, and to reflect on the norms of a discipline or profession.

The capstone for the Certificate Level I – Hotel Management and Certificate Level I – Restaurant Management is HAMG 2480 Coop Education (or Field Experience) - Hospitality Administration Management, a 176-hour combination of practical, workplace training and face-to-face instruction. Experience is documented through an individualized learning plan developed by the employer, college, and student.

What is Coop Education? “Coop Education” is the term used to represent practical education in relation to the state approved program of on-the-job, hands-on training. Such training is funded by the state when it meets guidelines set forth by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB).

Coop Education: A method of Technical/Academic instruction for individuals who, through written practicum arrangements between the school and sponsors, receive instruction, including required academic courses and related vocational instruction, by alternating study in school with a job in any occupational field. The two experiences must be planned and supervised by the school and sponsors so that each contributes to the student’s education and employability. Work periods and school attendance may be alternate half days, full days, weeks, or other periods of time in fulfilling the coop education program.

“Coop Education” at HCCS, is that part of a technical or academic program consisting of one or more approved courses. These courses carry the technical program or academic area name and number. Each technical course consists of one lecture hour per semester and a minimum of 10 hours per week of “hands on” job experience in a 1-semester hour course. Actual use of the credit hours toward degree requirements is specified on the degree plan or at the discretion of the instructional dean, within college rules and regulations.

Each course must have its own course prefix and course reference number. Training must be delivered, supervised and coordinated by a “qualified instructor” to satisfy the THECB requirements. The instructor and the program receive 10 contact hours per week, per student, per 1 semester hour course for a total of 160 contact hours per semester, per student. The program area is responsible for requesting course approval, student counseling, student registration and supervising the training, just as with any other course in the program curriculum.

The Cooperative Education Office was established to promote practicum, to assist and train workforce programs in procedures for conducting practicum courses, to assist the workforce programs in setting up job sites, to keep a coordinated system of practicum records and to function as an intermediary between the workforce programs and the Coordinating Board.

MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS COOP EDUCATION? It is a team effort involving your work supervisor, you, and your instructor. Coop Education is a method of instruction that offers you the opportunity to earn college credit for the achievement of learning activities, which are accomplished through current work experience or a special project.

HOW IS COLLEGE CREDIT DETERMINED? Credit for coop education during the semester will be based on the following:

1. A minimum of 10 external contact hours per week for 16 weeks and 1 lecture hour equals 1 credit hour. No more than ten (10) hours of work may be credited to your work requirements each week.

2. Successful achievement of the requirements listed on the course outline for Coop Education and completion of scheduled reports from first day of class to the last day of class.

HOW DO YOU QUALIFY FOR ENROLLMENT? You must have successfully completed at least 66% of the Certificate Level I requirements and have departmental approval and meet individual department requirements.

DO VA BENEFITS APPLY? Coop Education is an approved course of study at HCCS for graduate and VA programs. For all questions concerning VA benefits, check with the HCCS VA office or Registrar.

MUST YOU HAVE A JOB TO ENROLL? Yes. Your instructor will assist you in seeking approved employment. However, you must be employed by the official day of record.

CAN THE JOB BE PAID? Yes, students can choose to work as a paid employee or as an un-paid intern/volunteer. International students should work with the International Student Office to obtain proper documentation (CPT) to gain paid employment.

ARE COOP EDUCATION CREDITS TRANSFERABLE? Typically, it will depend on your major and the institution in which you want to transfer. Currently, our agreement with University of Houston’s Hilton College does accept our course as an equivalent to their year one practicum course. However, always check with the college of your choice to be sure.

5

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU QUIT OR CHANGE JOBS DURING THE SEMESTER? You will be dropped if you quit working without an instructor’s written permission. If you change jobs, you must repeat the paper work for the new job just like you did at the beginning of the semester.

HOW DO YOU DROP OR ADD COOP EDUCATION? These courses are just like any other course. Regular registration procedures are followed. The only difference is a permission code will be required when enrolling, which can be obtained after completing the Coop Education application.

WHAT KIND OF GRADE MAY YOU RECEIVE? Grades are just like those in other courses. Your instructor will base your grade on how well you met the requirements listed on the course outline for Coop Education.

WHAT STEPS SHOULD I TAKE NEXT? 1. See the Department Chair or Coop Education instructor for the program responsible for

your area of study as some requirements may vary slightly from program to program.2. Read the Student Guide thoroughly and any additional questions can be answered by your

Coop Education instructor.3. Do not wait until registration begins. Make sure all forms and paper work are filled out and

turned in on time.4. In cooperation with your Coop Education Instructor or Cooperative Education Office,

secure approved employment and have it verified by the department.5. With the help of your Coop Education Instructor and employment supervisor, develop a

work agreement.6. Sign up for class and remember there is a one (1) hour lecture in Week 1 that must be

attended.

COOP EDUCATION FORMS

COOP EDUCATION STUDENT APPLICATION This form is for organizational and communication purposes; it is required documentation for permanent files. The form helps generate a list of all interested students, along with all data needed to allow follow-up and to assist in practicum job placement. Completion of the form encourages the student to begin thoughtful consideration of factors involved with Coop Education. The forms will be completed and kept in the program files by the instructor.

Once practicum instructor ensures all pre-requisites are met, he/she will issue student a permission number for enrollment into the course. The information will also allow instructor to know which student may need assistance finding employment for the course.

This form should normally be completed the semester proceeding the intended practicum semester. Such timing will allow sufficient time for placement of the student. Applications are accepted up until the last day of registration. The later the application, the less chance of placement.

This form is due PRIOR to enrolling in the course, the semester prior is ideal.

PRACTICUM WORK EXPERIENCE AGREEMENT All HCCS practicum programs are required to procure and maintain letters of agreement between HCCS, the student, and the practicum sponsor. These documents should be retained for a period of 5 years.

External learning experiences must be governed by a written agreement of affiliation between the higher education institution and the affiliated public or private entities. The practicum agreement form is the initial document verifying employment. It is important to turn in the agreement form as early in the semester as possible as it must be turned into the HCC Workforce Office. Also, it is important that the form is accurate. The employer’s name and address are used for evaluation mail outs from the practicum office; therefore, the correct information is essential.

This form is due by the 2nd week of class or risk being dropped from the course.

MAP TO PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT Download a map from MapQuest leading your instructor to your place of employment. Your map should be from your class location (HCC Central Campus) to place of employment. Please note and special parking instructions, security precautions, etc.

Please submit this map to your instructor with the work agreement form.

COOP EDUCATION PROGRAM TRAINING PLAN The Training Plan is a required document. This document must be completed and on file before a Practicum position is official. It is desirable that the Training Plan be completed before the student reports to work. Due to the substantial number of students and the vastness of the area over which they are spread, that is sometimes impossible. We can satisfy the “Coordinating Board” requirement by having a verbal agreement with the sponsor to initiate hiring and have the actual written agreement (the Training Plan) delivered by mail or by the student as soon as possible. The due date for completing and filing the Training Plan is the end of the third week of the Practicum Semester.

NOTE: If there is no Training Plan on file, there is NO credit given for Practicum training. The program earns no contact hours and NO funding is received from the State.

The goals or training schedule must be developed and kept current by an instructor qualified to teach in the program. A general list of goals or training functions for all students is satisfactory, if they are acceptable to the sponsor and allow the students to significantly improve their knowledge and skills. Otherwise, a specific Training Plan should be developed for the student and sponsor involved.

The signatures are essential to establish the practicum agreement between the parties as spelled out in the THECB Guidelines.

This form is due by the 3rd week of class or risk being dropped from the course.

WEEKLY WORK REPORT Students should actively report their exact hours works each week which requires their supervisor’s approval. This report should be updated weekly and ensure students are meeting the minimum requirement of 10 hours. This will be retained to ensure the student worked the full 160 hours required by the practicum guidelines.

This form is due on the final week of class or risk receiving a lower grade for the course.

PRACTICUM STUDENT EVALUATION FORM An external learning experience evaluation form must be initiated by the instructor for each student in the practicum course and maintained at the educational institution. The evaluation form should be retained for a period not to exceed the retention period the instructor has for other course documents.

This form is due on the final week of class or risk receiving a lower grade for the course.
