Hospital programme could helpreduce medical errors
The Regional Medication Safety Program for Hospitals(RMSPH), set to be implemented in 65 hospitals inPhiladelphia, US, could become a national model in theUS as hospitals seek new ways to improve patientsafety, reports JAMA.
The RMSPH has expanded on the six goals outlined bythe US Institute of Medicine’s 2000 report, ‘Crossing thequality chasm: a new health system for the 21stcentury’.* 16 ‘action goals’ have been developed, alongwith tools to assist hospitals in achieving these goals. The 16 objectives fall under four main categories:infrastructure, institutional culture, technology andclinical practice. Vice president of medical affairs forTenet HealthSystem, Pennsylvania, Dr ThomasMcCarter says that the RMSPH may be just what isneeded to integrate patient safety data andprogramming efforts to reduce errors. However, henotes that healthcare is complex, with many errors oftencontributing to adverse events; therefore, ‘it’s hard tocome up with the silver bullet that will fix everything’.* see PharmacoEconomics & Outcomes News 304; 11, 17 Mar 2001;800840472
