Materials Worsted weight yarn (I use Red Heart Super Saver) - approx. 85 yds main color (MC) - approx. 7 yds contrasting color (CC) Size H crochet hook (Note: the size of hook and yarn yardage may vary depending on what yarn you use) Black yarn to embroider nose and eyebrows Black felt & black thread for eyes Darning & sewing needles Poly-fil or similar stuffing Plastic pellets & scrap fabric (optional) (I use Poly-pellets) Stitch marker (optional)

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS The finished horse stands approximately 7" high, depending on the yarn and hook used.

ABBREVIATIONS USED ch = chain sl st = slip stitch sc = single crochet hdc = half double crochet (Yarn over and insert hook into stitch. Draw up a loop. Yarn over and draw through all three loops on hook.) dc = double crochet sc2tog = single crochet 2 together (Insert hook into stitch and draw up a loop. Insert hook into next stitch and draw up a loop. Yarn over, draw through all 3 loops on hook.)

Head With main color (MC), ch 2 Rnd 1: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook; 6 sc. Arm (make 2) With contrasting color (CC), ch 2 Rnd 1: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook; 6 sc. Sl st to join this rnd Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc; 12 sc. Sl st to join this rnd. Fasten off.

With MC Rnd 1 - 4: sc in each sc; 12 sc Rnd 5: (sc in next 2 sc, sc2tog) around; 9 sc Rnd 6: (sc in next sc; sc2tog) around; 6 sc. Sl st to join this rnd. Leave 12" tail to sew arm to body. Fasten off.

Ear (make 2) With CC, ch 4 Rnd 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and next 2 ch; 3 sc. Ch 2, turn. Rnd 2: dc in each sc; 4 dc (ch 2 from previous row counts as 1st dc). Ch 2, turn. Rnd 3: dc in each dc, holding the last loop of each dc on the hook; then, yarn over and take off all remaining loops. A tight ch st should then be made to fasten the cluster. Fasten off CC. You should now have a somewhat triangular-shaped piece ("Piece A") (Fig. 1)

With MC, Rnd 1: evenly up right side of Piece A: 3 sc, 2 sc in one st, 2 sc. Hdc & dc & hdc in one stitch at peak of Piece A. (Fig. 2) Evenly down left side of Piece A: 2 sc, 2 sc in one st, 3 sc; 17 sts. Sl st in CC chain row. (Fig. 3, 4) (This helps shape the ear.) Rnd 2: Ignoring sl st you just made in CC chain row, sl in 1st 2 sc, sc in next 5 sc, hdc in next st, hdc & dc & hdc in next st, hdc in next st, sc in next 5 sc, sl st in next 2 sc; 19 sts. Sl st in CC chain row. Leave 12" tail to sew ear to head. Fasten off.

Muzzle With MC, ch 2 Rnd 1: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook; 6 sc. Sl st to join this rnd only. Rnd 2: (sc in next 2 sc, 3 sc in next sc) around; 10 sc Rnd 3: sc in next 3 sc, 3 sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc, 3 sc in next sc, sc; 14 sc Rnd 4: (2 sc in next sc, sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc) around; 18 sc Rnd 5 & 6: sc in each sc; 18 sc Rnd 7: (2 sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 3 sc) around; 22 sc Rnd 8: sc in each sc; 22 sc. Sl st to join this rnd. Leave 24" tail to sew muzzle to head. Fasten off.

Finishing: 1. Stuff body. Do not sew shut. You may wish to put some plastic pellets in the bottom of the body before stuffing to add some weight and stability. If you do, I recommend placing the pellets inside a small fabric pouch before putting them in the body; otherwise, they are likely to eventually fall out between the spaces of the single crochets. This is not only messy but also a potential choking hazard for small children. (I cut two circles approx. 3" in diameter from scrap fabric, sew them together leaving a 1" opening, fill the pouch with a scant cup of pellets and then stitch the opening shut.) 2. Sew head to body using inside loops only of last rnd of body. 3. Stuff arms lightly and sew to body. 4. Weave ends in ears and then sew ears to head. (I usually sew them between Rnd 8 & 9) 5. Stuff muzzle lightly and sew to face, using inside loops only of last rnd of muzzle. 6. Sew felt eyes to face (alternatively, embroider eyes to face) 7. Embroider eyebrows and nostrils. (Fig. 5)

Tail With MC, cut 10 pieces 6" long each. Stack the pieces on top of each other, forming a bundle. Cut a 12" piece of MC and tie the bundle in half. (Fig. 6) Fold bundle in half (Fig. 7) and sew to body. Wrap MC around base of tail a few times before fastening off. Trim tail to desired length.

Mane With MC, cut two pieces 5" each. Stack them on top of each other like a bundle and fold the bundle in half. (Fig. 8) Use crochet hook as a latch hook (that is, insert hook into head, under a stitch where you want a strand of the mane to be, and up out from head). (Fig. 9) Catch the loop of doubled-over MC with hook. (Fig. 10) Pull loop through head halfway. (Fig. 11) Catch opposite ends of loop with crochet hook, and pull through loop. (Fig. 12, 13, 14) Pull to tighten the mane to the head. Repeat till mane is complete (approx. 24 "bundles" will be used). Trim mane, if desired.
