This Wasn’t in the BrochureValentine’s Day... A Memory

Page 2 – Horse ‘n Around the Mountains, Inc.

When you are young, Valen -tine’s Day is either some -thing to look forward to or

dread. ! Well I guess when I thinkabout it, age doesn’t reallymatter. !For me being from Chicago,Valentine’s Day means Massacre, butthen that’s only me. ! I’m not asentimental person, but my husbandis a real romantic. ! I don’t giveValentine’s Day a 2nd thoughtbecause I got married once on thatday.... it didn’t work out. !I tell him Idon’t want anything, but he doesn’tlisten. !One year I was down clean -ing the barn and he had gone totown to do some errands. !The nextthing I know, a large trailer is pullingup with him following in the car. !Heget’s out and says “Happy ValentineHoney”, and the trailer doors open, and two Texas Longhorn cows areunloaded. ! Needless to say I wasspeechless. !He thought I would like

them, and yes, I did, but we reallydidn’t need them. ! With my ranchbackground I consider them “walk -ing lawn ornaments” that have to befed. !I called my lifelong girlfriend inChicago and had her guess what Igot for Valentines Day. ! She said,“diamonds?, a car?, nice dinner?” !Itold her “no, I got two TexasLonghorn cows.” ! There was amoment of silence, then she said“and you’re happy about that?” ! Ihave to admit, this was not the kindof gift she was used to. !A few yearslater I got the same reaction fromher when I told her I got a tractor. !

So you see, diamonds may be agirls best friend for a city woman, but here on the ranch, we like to getthings that we can use. !So anytimethere is a reason for me to get a gift,I usually get the tool catalog out andleave little hints. ! Life has changedfor me but for the better. !Who needs

sparkle when you get a good pair ofwork gloves! !

Have Fun But Keep it SafeGiving is Better Than Receiving

This month I am writing a littledifferent story about a young,12 year old girl, whom I have

not yet met. Her name is Beka andher story really amazed me.

Beka decided at Christmas timethat she wanted to help a family. Sheand her mother were having a dis-cussion about how things weretough this year for a lot of peopleand how Beka and her Mom hadbeen in this situation before.

Beka found a family that hadthree children of there own and tookin three more! Wow that’s six chil-dren! All on her own Beka was ableto raise three hundred dollars. Idecided to donate a riding lessonfor the oldest girl.

On Christmas day, Beka broughtall the gifts to the family. She wasamazed at how joyful it made herfeel being able to help a family andhas now made it her goal, each yearat Christmas, to find a family inneed.

The day came when the childrencame out to the house for the ridinglesson and I felt the same way Bekadid. It just touched my heart to seethose little children have so muchfun with GG. I think I got more out ofwatching them have fun then theydid.

It seems like all you hear now onthe news or in the papers is aboutcrimes. It was so nice to hear about apositive story, a true story! How ayoung girl found it rewarding to giveand help a family in need. We allhave so much more than we need. The great feeling it gave me just tohave them come to my home andride a horse was really amazing. I dothis anytime I want, but for thesebeautiful children it was so special,a wonderful day that they probablywon't forget. I know I won't, and I alsoknow Beka will not forget either.Beka taught me a great lesson ongiving!

I hope you will feel the same

way and find a family that mightneed a little help. It doesnt have tobe be at Christmas.

Have Fun and Keep it Safe. !____________________

Hi,

Well my day ended light so I picked upa copy of your recent issue.! Actually Ilooked through it twice and noticed a storyabout a family losing a brother.! I readthat story and it broke my heart yetcracked me up as how Lance made hisfamily so happy.! Then I read theBrahma story. I laughed at parts ofthat to where I had tears rolling.

I was raised on a ranch, never dealt withbrahma’s but we had to work carefullyaround Angus bulls.! Of course, they arenothing like Brahmas but while I readthe story I felt like I was right there rid-ing with them.

What a story.

Say You Saw it in...

Had a couple warm days after apiece of winter, Thank You,Lord. I might have let a few

things slip durin’ the times the firefelt good.

There’s a pile of feed sacks todeal with, Thank You Lord, that I amable to care for all my critters. Thedogs keep watch and make a gooddoorbell while keepin’ the coyoteout of the chickens. Those eggs aresure good everyday. Thank YouLord, for all my critters and keepin’them safe... and them old boots....

Got a couple feed sacks full oftin cans, they don’t burn, ya know.We sure do eat good, and haveplenty... Thank You, Lord.... and allthese boxes... it’ll take a week toburn’em all... there’s the boxes thatwe get our drinkin’ water. Purewater that don’t mess up the coffeepot... Thank You, Lord... the boxesthat my wonderful kids sent usChristmas stuff in... Thank You,Lord....

Now, those coffee cans ain’ttrash... I gotta couple buckets full ofscrews, bolts, nails, nuts, washersand other good stuff to sort out...someday, Thank You, Lord, and thecoffee sure has tasted good....

Guess I can toss the oil jugs fromchangin’ oil in my ole truck that stillruns... Thank You, Lord... and themold boots..?

Don’t need the old hose full ofleaks still layin’ by the new one towater the orchard and garden... andthe occaissional stray cow an’ calfthat comes by thirsty... Thank You,Lord...

Hmmm... a couple bustedbuckets, plastic just don’t last, a fewpieces of busted pipe, scraps ofwood from this an’ that, maybe Iwon’t fix that old chair, it never wasmuch anyway, but... Thank You,Lord... it worked til it broke... andthem ole boots....

I got all the stuff I wastn’t burnin’into my truck... I gotta good oldfriend with a dumpster open tome.... Thank You Lord... lookin’ inthe rear view mirror I saw atruckload of trash...

Got me to thinkin’ about mylife... lookin’ back.... I ain’t haulin’around near as much trash in my lifeas I was before I asked Jesus toforgive me and be my Lord.... I don’ttalk trash anymore... much.. I don’tdrink or smoke or chew trashanymore... I don’t chase trash or

throw away what my Lord givesme.... on trash... I don’t think somuch trash anymore... and it allhappened without me even thinkin’about it... my Lord just crowded itout when I started dealin’ with Himhonestly....

John 3:16 For God so loved theworld, that he gave his only begot-ten Son, that whosoever believeth inhim should not perish, but haveeverlasting life. 17. For God sent nothis Son into the world to condemnthe world; but that the world throughhim might be saved. 18. He thatbelieveth on him is not condemned:but he that believeth not is con-demned already, because he hathnot believed in the name of the onlybegotten Son of God.

I’ve had those boots better thanthirty years, gone lots of miles...several rebuilds, the heels are rundown and the soles are thin again, scuffed up, beat up... but... they willfix up and clean up and keep onworkin’... guess I’m not done withthem yet... and my Lord is not donewith me... Thank You Lord.... forcleanin’ out the trash... and my oleboots.... Along the way. !

1 Out of the depths I cry to you, Lord;2 Lord, hear my voice. Let your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy.3 If you, Lord, kept a record of sins, Lord, who could stand?4 But with you there is forgiveness, so that we can, with reverence, serve

you.5 I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits, and in his word I put my

hope.6 I wait for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning.7 Israel, put your hope in the Lord, for with the Lord is unfailing love and

with him is full redemption.8 He himself will redeem Israel from all their sins. (NIV)

Livin’ the DreamOnce upon a time I had a good

strong back and could lift anydarn thing I pleased and still

walk upright when I was done. Wow,where did those days go??? Beingolder now and definitely much morelimited in my lifting and flexibility, when it was time to purchase my forev-er horse I made the decision to go witha gaited breed. Yes I know, no selfrespecting cowgirl would ride any-thing but a quarter horse. Well selfrespect or not, I did fancy being ableto go to work after a weekend of rid-ing. And truth be told I don’t find post-ing a trot to be all that enjoyable. Citygirl for my first fifty years I was, andcan’t shake it or pretend otherwise.

My search for the perfect gaitedhorse led me to Dream Walker Ranchin nearby Las Vegas, and it’s there thatI met my good friends, Matt and Jenn. These two are owners and operators ofDream Walker Ranch, and they too areliving a life long dream. Havingfriends and family in Tennessee, theydecided back in 2007 to bring somegaited horses out to Las Vegas to see ifthere was a market for these excep-tional horses. Some five successfulyears later I would hazard to guess thatthe answer was a resounding yes! It isfrom Dream Walker that I purchasedmy three wonderful hay burners, and Ihighly recommend them if you seek asmoother ride for any reason.

This past Christmas Jenn and Matttook in a beautiful little black geldingthat they had sold three years prior toa customer in Florida. Apparently theheat and humidity didn’t suit this littleboy. He had been turned out for sometime and his condition not monitored, which resulted in some pretty unfortu-nate results. Black Night had leftDream Walker a beautiful 2 year oldgelding full of youth and potential. Hecame back weathered from neglectand the apparent inability to toleratethe heat and humidity that is so preva-lent in Florida. Poor Night was thin andemaciated, and covered with oozingsores on his neck and body. Thesesores had caused Night to itch to thepoint of him scratching off his maneand skin. When his owner finally dis-covered Night’s condition he calledJenn and offered to give him back ifthey would be willing to bring himback to health. Needless to say Jennand Matt had him returned to the ranchwithin days. They consider him aChristmas gift and are thankful to havehim back in their care. Night is now onthe road to recovery and should even-tually return to the beautiful blackbeauty that he once was.

Dream Walker does not just selltheir horses, their dream is to find for-

ever homes for these magnificent ani-mals. While not inexpensive, I’vefound my three wonderful foreverhorses at this ranch. I highly recom-mend them, as they don’t misrepresenttheir horses in any way. They allow acustomer the time to make a choicewithout pressure. Anyone who haspurchased a horse knows how impor-tant, and unfortunately rare, integrityin their sales can be. Matt, Jenn andtrainer Christy will match a horse tothe rider’s ability, and patiently allowas many rides and visits as might benecessary to determine if the two are amatch. Dream Walker has a largearena and nearby trails for testing apotential purchase, and are verypatient and honest with a nervousclient. That would be me! Their kind-ness and concern for their horses aswell as their customers is apparentwith every visit.

Don’t hesitate to schedule anappointment with Dream Walker Ranchif the purchase of a gaited horse issomething that you are considering. You won’t be disappointed!

You can find Matt and Jenn atDreamwalkerhorses.com, or call theranch at 702 468-0915. I guarantee youwill visit the website often to view theirhorses and drool over them. How doyou think that I ended up with three???As for the plight of little Night, I wasjust informed today that he has alreadyfound a new forever home. Customersvisiting Dream Walker this past week-end saw him, rode him and fell in lovewith him. He is now recovering in hisnew home in California, and lookingforward to a long healthy future. Don’tyou just love it, another happy ending!

Until next month, thanks again forlistening and as always, enjoy theride!and until next month, enjoy theride! !

Almost 5 months old and BabyZoey gets to meet her adop-tive parents Jim and Nancy

Vareberg.! Living at the property justnext door to the Rescue, Nancy hasbeen asking about a baby burroever since they moved to Wikieup 8years ago.! When we first picked upBaby Zoey I called Jim & Nancy rightaway at their part time home inMinniesota, and that same night theysaid yes to the adoption.! Raising ayoung burro or equine and bottle

feeding for months can be veryexpensive, but Baby Zoey was justtoo cute to say no to.

Jim and Nancy arrived at theirhome here in Arizona in latterJanuary and there have been manychanges in Baby Zoey's life andours.! Even though we could weeneZoey from the milk feeding, we arecontinuing to build her up just a bitmore and also to create a specialbond! with her new owners.! Now,weeks later Baby Zoey comes run-

ning when she hears their jeep driv-ing up the road and get pretty excit-ed as they jump out of the jeep withher gallon size baby bottle.! WhileNancy holds the bottle, Jimmybrushes Baby Zoey to keep herclean and soft.

But Baby Zoey is still here at theRescue, and I have to admit it is a bitheartbreaking when we comearound her pen and she kicks up herheals all excited and runs into herlittle house.! She waits by the frontoutside door peaking through thecrank! between the doors, waitingfor us to open it up and bottle feedher.! But instead we just try and keepwalking or maybe stop and playwith her some.! Its time for her tobond with Jim and Nancy, and wedon't want to confuse her.! But we doget to babysit while Jim and Nancyare gone for the day and now it is avery special treat to bottle feed her.I think it affects Ashley even morethan me, she really loves Baby Zoeywith all her heart.! Its a hard lessonhere at the Rescue, to be happyenough to find a special home forour animals, where they will beloved and cared for.! But its easiersaid than done, even though werecieve adoption fees to keep theRescue going, its still hard to watchthese animals we've thrown our loveinto, leave.

One thing for sure though, there

are plenty more animals for us tocare for that need good homes.! Justa few weeks ago we picked up awhole family of Burros. Mom(Jenny)!Dad (Jack)!and a young babyboy (JJ), and mom Jenny is preg-nant.! ! With horses, goats, andsheep!coming in on a regular basisit's never dull.! And as crazy as thissounds, by the time this issue hitsthe street we will have a small heardof cattle, 5 different breeds!! Theywill be part of a new educationalprogram we are designing for thekids that visit our Rescue.Volunteers are always welcome.......

Well next month we'll have pic-tures of Baby Zoey in her new homeand keep you informed on how shesgrowing up fast.! Maybe even pics ofher 6 month old Birthday Party.

If you would like to Help theRescue Feed Abused Animals justsend in you donations to: SacredGrounds Rescue, POBox 967,Wikieup AZ 85360 or maybe youhave some extra fencing, Tposts, lumber, corrigated tin, the list islong but needed.! Thank You forbeing Baby Zoey's friend. Thanks forreading. !

The Grim Reaper

He’d ridden hard the last twodays. Too hard! The buckskinstallion he rode was the

toughest horse he’d ever owned, andeven he was showing signs of thehard trip.

Sweat streaks coursed their waydown his flanks and legs, and he wasdrawed up some. The fire was still inhis eyes, though, and he’d die beforehe’d quit. He was just that kind ofhorse. Made tough in a tough land, for tougher work. And that’s exactlywhat they were doin’ now.

Two days ago he’d left AztecNew Mexico and started west on thetrail of five men. He knew two per-sonally, and knew of the other three. There wasn’t a real man in the wholedamn lot of ‘em.

Trouble hunters and bullies whotook their strength in numbers, notas individuals. The McCallister twinswere just plain mean, with norespect for themselves, or others.Grady Jackson was a coyote from theground up. He’d look you in the face, but not the eyes, while tryin’ ta figureout how ta steal from you, or stab youin the back.

Then there was Allan Taylor andClint Carver. They were basicallygood boys, only they followed what-ever way wind blew, instead ofbeing strong, and leading.

At least they’d been good untilfour days ago! That’s when they’dcrossed over the line of no return.

It had been a pleasant, sunny, spring day, and he was sitting in achair on the porch of his officesoakin’ up the sun. A dog dozed inthe shade of the water trough over infront of the livery, and the ringing ofa hammer on an anvil down atCharlie’s Blacksmith Shop echoedthrough the peacefulness.

I had plans of takin’ Lizbeth todinner tonight, ‘cause it was her 16thbirthday. She didn’t know it, but thatdress she’d wanted was wrapped up

and hid away in my office. I’d give itto her tonight!

I was thinkin’ on how happyshe’d be, when a horse racin’ up thestreet shattered the calm of the day.Grady came around the corner ofthe livery at a dead run, on his blackand white paint, and slid to a stop infront of my office, covering me with acloud of dust.

“Sheriff, ya gotta come quick,”he blurted out. “One of our handswas shot, and the three that done itstole a bunch of our cows, and lit out.Dad says please come quick. I gottago get Doc, and get back. See ya atthe ranch!”

He whirled his paint around, headed towards the Doc’s house, as Isprinted over to the livery and sad-dled the buckskin.

Steppin’ aboard, I headed totheir ranch, ten miles away. I wasn’twaitin’ on Grady. I’d much rather getthe straight story from his dad. Iwished now I’d waited,” the thoughtcame into my mind.

The buckskin had a naturalground coverin’ fast walk that wasmuch faster than most horses at afast trot, and he settled into it now. Ilet him stay in the walk, ‘cause I did-n’t know what the trail might have forme up ahead.

I knew I was goin’ after the menwho’d stole the cattle, and woundedthat cowhand, but I wanted my horsefresh when I did. I also had no ideaas to how much of a lead they had.

I’d got to the ranch, and Grady’sdad came out, smilin’! “What yadoing, Clint” Light, and set a spell.Vera, git me and the sheriff sometea, would ya please?”

“Wait a damn minute,” I said.“Grady just came inta town whippin’and spurrin’! Said ya had a cowboyshot, and three rustlers took off withsome cattle. What the thunder isgoin’ on?”

I was getting’ a sick feelin’ in the

pit of my stomach, and that wasnever a good thing. The astonishedlook on Grady’s dad’s face wasn’thelpin’ either. Then he grinned. “Oh,he was prob’ly just teasin’ ya! Youknow how kids are. C’mon, and sitdown.”

Him making light of what his boyhad just done didn’t make me feelany better.

“No thanks,” I snapped. “Yourson better have a damn good rea-son, Chester. I mean a damn goodreason.”

With that, I spun the buckskin, and headed for town, with my stom-ach churning up a storm. Like I said, when that happens, it’s never good,so I put the stud into a long, fast lopeand headed for town. Something waswrong here!

About two miles from town, Juddfrom the mercantile store cameracin’ at me on a dead run, wavinghis hat, and shouting. All I could getout of it all, was the words “bank”and “dead”.

Slammin’ the spurs to my stud, Iwent right by him on a dead run, andraced for town. When I got there, Isaw a crowd in the street.

I pulled the stud down to a walk, and the sickest feelin’ I’ve everknown came rushing over me. I wasalmost physically sick over it. Withdread and fear, I rode up to thecrowd, as some of them turned tostare at me.

No one said a word as they part-ed, so I could pass. Tears were flow-ing from some of the women, as Istepped down from my horse.

Then, I saw her! Lizbeth waslying on the ground, in a pool ofblood! Doc held her head in his lap,and shook his head “no” as I lookedat him.

The next two days, I alteredbetween pain, mourning, and hate,to a white-hot rage, then back tonumb pain and mourning.

Somewhere in that space of time, Iburied my daughter, and got thedetails of what had happened.

After I’d left town, Grady, theMcCallisters, Allan, and Clint rodeout of the alley down by the bank.Dismounting, they’d gone inside, and at gunpoint, had robbed it. Theclerk thought they were joking ‘tillJed McCallister shot him! Then, themanager gave them the cash, andthey left.

Lizbeth had heard the shot, andhad stopped to see what was goin’on. Clint rode past her on a deadrun, and laughed at her. The othersrode right over the top of her as theyraced away! Jake McCallister hadtaken the time to shoot her as hishorse trampled her young, innocentbody further into the ground.

Two days later, after the funeraland buryin’, I left town, on the trail.I’d given the judge my badge, as Iprepared to leave.

“Don’t you think you’ll needthis,” he’d asked.

“Nope,” I’d answered back.“Where I’m goin’, ain’t no place for abadge, believe me. I rode this trailyears ago, before I came here!”

As I stepped into the saddle, hesaid, ”Where’s that?” “Hell,” Ianswered, then added, “And I’m theGrim Reaper!” He stepped back as Iturned to go. Grady’s dad, Chester, rode up just then.

“Ya goin’ for ‘em?” he asked.“Yep. Just leavin’.”“Look, I’m sorry ‘bout Lizbeth,

but go easy, will you? They are justyoung men, who made a mistake.See ya’ when ya’ get back.”

Reachin’ out with my right hand,I grabbed his throat, and with a lookof hate and disgust, I squeezed, as Isaid, “Chester, I ain’t comin’ back. And neither are they!”

What You Doon the Ground

Translates into the SaddleDisplay strong leadership qualities on

the ground before you mount. Your horse willcomply in a willing way if the way you ask inthe saddle is consistant with the way youasked when you were on the ground.

Remember you are alpha mare with twofeet on the ground and you remain alphamare with two feet in the stirrups.

Drive Up Insteadof Pulling Back

This can be one of the most profoundthings to find and execute in your riding.Once you do feel this movement you need tosearch for it and make it a natural movementfor you and your horse. It takes good balance, the understanding of cadence and harmonyin movement, which can be achieved by usingall your aids as if you were riding in the horsenot on top.1) Relax and let the horse move your hips2) When you relax your legs will start mov-

ing with the back legs of the horse.3) Use your hands (reins) one at a time in

conjunction with the movement of yourhips.

4) See-saw your hands5) When your right hip goes down lightly

engage your right rein - the see of thesaw.

6) When your left hip goes down lightlyengage your left rein - the saw of the see.As you see-saw your horse into a supple

head set his back will round out and his bodywill become well balanced. This is true col-lection. Now try to ride him with that supple-ness into a different cadence. Feel how yourlegs move with his movement to enhance theharmony in your ride nd between you andyour horse.

Lift, Don’t PullWhen working with your horse don’t pull

down and back to lower your horses head orto slow down. Instead lift slightly, curl yourwrist for better feel and see saw to lift yourhorses shoulders one at a time and round hisback. Respect and love your horse and enjoyyour ride. !
