Teachers should have their door keys with them at all times. When leaving the room with your class, please lock the door behind you.  Windows in doors are not to be covered or obscured during the school year. Check to be sure all outside windows are closed and locked at the end of the day.

CPS                                          CHILD PROTECTIVE SERVICES

The Texas Family Code §261.101 requires professionals to make a report within 48 hours of first suspecting abuse, neglect or exploitation of children.

*Call 911 or your local law enforcement agency if the situation is an emergency. Any person having a reason to believe that a child may have been abused or neglected is mandated to

report this information to the appropriate agency within 48 hours of the initial suspicion

It is NOT necessary for staff to make multiple CPS reports regarding the same incident UNLESS different staff members have different information regarding the incident. If multiple reports ARE made, whenever possible, collaborate with other staff members to obtain the CPS reference number they received for their call and report this number to the hotline worker who takes subsequent calls about the same incident”.

14

HOW TO REPORT: You may call the Abuse Hotline toll-free 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 1-800-252-5400 or you may fill out your report online at www.txabusehotline.org.  Teachers/Staff may report anonymously, with full disclosure, or with assistance.

After making a report, inform Dr. Bashara as soon as it is submitted. The school counselor is available to assist during this process but it is not required.

CRISIS, STUDENT RELATED

If you believe someone is in crisis call the front office and ask for either Mr. Warden or an administrator, let them know that it is an emergency.  Do not leave the student alone. If needed, send someone else for help.

DRILLS

An administrator will orchestrate bus evacuation, weather, fire and safety drills.  Please follow instructions and keep students as comfortable and quiet as possible.

All teachers should have a binder sleeve with a red and green card in it. If you do not have one, please ask Gracie in the front office.  A class list and parent contact sheet should be in the sleeve. These will need to be updated periodically through the year. If you teach more than one class, you should have class lists for each class that you teach.  Whenever a drill is performed, the red and green cards should exit the building with you.

LOCKDOWN

In the event of an extreme emergency in or near the school, it may be necessary to “lock down” the school.  In this event, an administrator will announce over the loud speaker that we are in lock down.

Immediately check to see that doors are closed, locked and the window(s) covered and lights turned off.  Students are to sit along the wall out of sight in silence.  CELL PHONES ARE NOT TO BE USED. If students call parents and they arrive at the school, they WILL NOT BE ADMITTED. Do not open your door for anyone until given the all clear by an administrator.

 LOCK DOWN/BOMB THREAT etc.

In the event of a lock down you will be asked to lock doors and windows and place students in the least approachable area. Administrators may enter your room with their keys to determine specific needs.

BOTH OF THESE SITUATIONS MAY BE PRACTICED AT ANYTIME DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR TO ASSURE

EVERYONE IS FAMILIAR WITH THE EMERGENCY PROCEDURES.

15

SECURING PERSONAL PROPERTY

INSTRUCTIONAL TIME / STUDENT CHECK OUT

At HDE, we teach “bell to bell”. Parents must “check out” their child in the office when removing a student earlier than 2:45 PM.  Teachers may release students only if they receive a note or other contact from the office by or before 2:00PM.  Parents who go directly to the classroom should be asked to stop by the office first to sign out their child.

KEYS & SWIPECARDS

Teachers will be issued classroom keys by the school secretary.  Teachers will also receive a swipe card that allows you access to the building through particular doors.  Classroom door key, file cabinets, teacher desk key, and classroom cabinet keys are all dispersed together. Reports of lost keys should be made to principal’s secretary who is required to report to the superintendent.

LEAVING CAMPUS DURING THE DAY

Hornsby staff must sign out if they leave campus at any time during the school day (between 7:30 AM – 3:30 PM), and they must also sign back in upon their return.

MAILBOXES & VOICEMAIL

Each staff member is assigned a mailbox and a voicemail box.  Please check both daily.  Telephone messages will be forwarded to classroom voicemail.

MASTER CALENDAR

The master calendar is a living document that logs every activity planned for the school year.  Activities include practices, meetings, athletic events not on approved individual sport schedules, ceremonies, performances, guest speakers, pep rallies, etc.  A master calendar request must be prepared for any and all activities on campus even if being held in your own classroom.

19

Requests to the campus secretary must be submitted at least 15 working days prior to the planned activity. NOTE: Larger events may require more than 15 days. Plan accordingly.

MEETINGS

Professional staff members are required to attend a variety of meetings that decide the instructional programs for students, including but not limited to, ARDs, 504 Meetings, LPAC, and SAT meetings. Teachers are required to follow the meeting schedule for PLC and interdisciplinary team meetings.

PASSES / STUDENTS LEAVING CLASSROOMS / NURSE PASS

Students are expected to be in the classroom during class time. Students MUST have a pass if they are unaccompanied by their teacher. When a student leaves a classroom a generic pass should be used to signify where they are going.  The pass can be reusable and writeable (restroom, library, etc.) or be a red plastic pass that is always used for the restroom or library.

Please follow Ms. Jeffer’s guidelines for sending a student to the nurse. Teacher must use the NURSE PASS provided except in emergency situations. The NURSE PASS helps identify the student and concern more efficiently.

Parking

All staff will park in either the large parking lot in the back or in the small one by the Pre-K and Kinder wing.  Only designated administrators and office staff members will use the parking lot near the front office. A portion of this parking area will be designated for visitors.

RECYCLING & ENERGY CONSERVATION

We will continue the Recycling program here at Hornsby. Hornsby earns money for its paper recycling. Once a week students will come pick up your paper and cardboard recycling from outside of your classroom. There will also be can and bottle recycling bins in all staff work rooms and the teacher’s lounge. Please continue to recycle your water bottles and soda cans in these areas.

Our District has set a goal for every campus to reduce its energy consumption. There are not set rules

concerning refrigerators and microwaves as of yet, however, we highly encourage teams to share these items. Personal items that do not need to be plugged in (microwaves, coffee pots) should be unplugged unless they are in use.  If there is nothing in your refrigerator, unplug it over the weekend. Also, be sure to double check the air conditioner/heater controls in your classroom before you leave in the evening. Do not leave controls all the way up or down. Turn off all lights, television and computer monitors before leaving your room. Also, be very mindful of the projectors, not only do these take energy to run, but the bulbs will burn out when they are left on unnecessarily.  These bulbs are expensive and may be hard to replace.

STUDENT ASSISTANCE TEAM (SAT) INTERVENTION PROCESS

The SAT Process is being updated. More information will be added and trainings will be conducted by our RTI Teachers.

Student Academic Referral System: It is often the classroom teacher who is the first person to notice that a

child is having a problem or may have special needs.  Hornsby has a process where students' needs are reviewed, discussed in a professional forum, and recommendations are made to meet the child's needs.  In order to initiate the process, the teacher will need to fill out a Student Referral Form (SRF).  This form can be found in Eduphoria.  Please follow the SAT process that has been developed by the district.

Student Assistance Team: This is a committee of professional staff members who meet regularly to

review and make recommendations for interventions for students who are referred.  Remember that you are the best advocate for your student.

SMOKING & TOBACCO USE

Del Valle ISD is a smoke-free school system.  Smoking or use of any tobacco products is not allowed on school property.

STAFF DEVELOPMENT

 ON CAMPUS

See the District Webpage, under District Services and watch for emails from principals and grade level leaders.  Staff development days are mandatory.

 LOCAL

Before any reservations are made or fees paid by an employee, the employee’s supervisor, principal, and the superintendent must give approval.

 TRAVEL

Before any travel expenses (that one expects to be reimbursed for) are incurred by an employee, the employee’s supervisor, principal, and the superintendent must give approval.

STUDENT DRESS CODE

Upon arriving on campus, students are expected to be in dress code and to maintain that standard until they exit the building at the end of the academic day. Note: The academic day includes any after school tutoring, enrichment program, etc.

21

Students are to exhibit basic cleanliness and grooming that will not be a health or safety threat to themselves or to others, students or staff members.  The District prohibits any clothing or grooming that in the principal’s judgment may reasonably be expected to cause disruption of or interference with normal school operations.

The entire staff is responsible for monitoring dress code and behavior expectations. Additional and more specific information is available on request or you mat refer to the DVISD website.S

STUDENT SUPERVISION

Students are never to be left unattended and unsupervised.  In the event of an emergency, please notify the office. You can be held personally liable when leaving students unattended. If you notice a group of students that are not supervised, please dial “3650” to notify the office.

It is imperative that every staff member follows the campus schedule and adheres to designated timeframes. For example, we cannot expect special area teachers to supervise multiple grade levels during transition times. Being late for pick up times constitutes failure to supervise your students. During all transitions, the students should be continuously monitored.

OFFICE VISITS

Because we do not want students to be unsupervised, please do not send students directly to the office for any reason. If you have a student who you would like to read to an administrator or other adult, please contact that person directly to work on what time would work best. If you are experiencing a behavior challenge, please call the office at “3650”.

SUBSTITUTE TEACHER PLANS

If you are unable to come to work due to illness or a personal matter, please let us know as soon as possible.  Call SubFinder and email the school secretary and principals.  Teachers are required to maintain a sub-folder. SubFinder has a screen where specific instructions can be left for your sub.       Reminder:       anything    recorded in this space is public record.

Teachers will be given two folders to use for substitute plans. Each folder needs to have matching, generic information about your class.  The folder should contain the following items:

1. Updated seating chart2. Daily schedule3. Phone lists specific to your class (Sped teacher, Assistant Principal, Team Leader etc.)4. Student dismissal procedures along with bus numbers.5. Breakfast and lunch procedures6. Attendance Sheet

22

7. Split Class Schedule – in the event that a substitute does not fill your position, it may be necessary to split your class among your grade level.  Please create a document that lists each of the teachers on your grade level and the name of each student who would be going to that teacher if the need to split your class arises. Along with the student name, you should include how that student goes home as well as any special considerations (speech schedule, other regular pull-out, etc.) that are needed for that individual student.

In addition, the YELLOW folder will be used in case of an emergency.  These plans should be created and saved for any unforeseen emergency that may come up and would result in absence.  We do not normally promote worksheets as a primary instructional delivery model; however, for emergency plans several packets of work would be appropriate.

These completed YELLOW folders will need to be turned into Ms. Krystal Perez in the office by the end of the second Friday of school, September 6, 2013.

The other GREEN folder will be kept in the teacher’s possession.  At anytime you know you will be absent please complete the appropriate, detailed plans outlining that day for your substitute.  Please be sure to include adequate information for all activities and work as well as any materials that will be needed by the substitute teacher.  If you know you will be absent it is your responsibility to make sure the GREEN substitute folder is turned into the office the day before your absence.  There will be a designated box for you to leave your sub folder in.

SUPPLIES

Staff is issued basic supplies such as tape, pens, clips, chalk, etc.  Copy paper, construction paper, and bulletin board paper is stored for your use in the workroom. Per principal approval, staff may receive additional supplies from principal’s secretary.

TARDIES

Any student, who is not in the gym or the cafeteria when you pick up your class at 7:30am, should come to class with a tardy pass. Please be mindful of these students and make sure they have an opportunity to pick-up a breakfast.

TEAM HANDBOOK

Each grade level should keep a handbook. The handbook can be stored in the team leader’s room. It will serve as a reference for the team, as well as administrators, and can be updated throughout the year.

Items to be included in the handbook include, but are not limited to: Daily Schedule:  The times will you teach core subjects within your teaching blocks?

For example, if you are blocked from 8-10 you could have:

23

8:00-8:20 – phonics

8:20-9:20 – Language Arts – whole group and centers

9:20 – 10:00 – Math Whole group lesson

Behavior Management Plan:  Describe the behavior plan your team teachers use.  Explain the classroom

steps that are used prior to a referral being written.  Remember, one of those steps should be parent phone

call for disruptive and work related behaviors. Ensure that plan is in sync with PBIS campus expectations.

Assigned committees: A simple list of committees and who attends which one.

Personal Contact Information: A list of personal phone and e-mail contact information for each person.

Grade Level Overview:  A brief paragraph description for each of the four major content areas. This would be

great information to share with parents at the open house, giving an idea of the subject matter that will be

covered through the year.

Grading, Corrected, Late, & Make-Up Work Policies: What are your grade level grading policies?  Do you

deduct for corrected, late or make-up work?  We want consistency among your team with these procedures.

Homework and Late Work Policies: What are your homework policies? How long do you expect the students

to work on the homework that is assigned?  Do you have grade penalties for incomplete homework?

Student Supply List:  Just a running list of school materials that you ask the students to bring.  This can be adjusted through the year to create a more accurate list of materials that we ask students to have.  Please remember cost of the materials when you are thinking about what would be helpful for the students to have.

 TECHNOLOGY REQUEST

Technology work orders are completed through Eduphoria. Please follow the instructions on the website and include all pertinent information.

TEXTBOOKS – TEACHER RESPONSIBILITY

Teachers:1. Must keep an accurate record of all textbooks received and/or issued to students.2. Must keep a record of the textbook number stamped on the inside cover of all books issued to each

pupil.3. Conduct periodic textbook inspections as required by the assistant principal.4. Ensure that all textbooks have the name of the student in the appropriate place.5. Must notify the parent when first becoming aware of any textbook that is lost, destroyed, or

damaged.6. Must return all surplus textbooks to the assistant principal.  Surplus textbooks are defined as any
