Grinding Machime• These machines are also known as machine
tools;• It is used to obtain high accuracy with very
high class of surfae finish on the workpiece;• Grinding machines are classified as:-
Surface Grinding Machine, Cylindrical Grinding Machine, Internal Grinding Machine & Tool & Cutter Grinding
74-5
• Surface Grinding are further classified in the following four types :-
i. Horizontal Spindle and Reciprocating table;
ii. Vertical Spindle and reciprocating table;
iii. Horizontal Spindle and Rotary table;
iv. Vertical Spindle and Rotary table.

Horizontal Spindle & Reciprocating Table
• According to the name this grinder has a horizontal spindle.
• A disc type grinding wheel which performs the grinding action with its peripheral surface.
• In this grinding machine the work piece can be holded manually.
74-10
Parts:-• As shown in the figure this machine includes
of following main parts:-a. Grind wheel;
b. Reciprocating work-table;
c. Transverse feed;
d. Down feed;
e. Power control unit;
f. Head cross feed hand wheel;
g. Vertical feed hand wheel;
h. Cross feed selector leveler.
74-12
Functions of all parts of machine:-
• Power control unit:-• This unit is used to pass or allow the passage
of electricity in the grinding machine
74-13
Functions of all parts of machine:-
• Head cross feed hand wheel :-• This hand wheel allows the drilling wheel to
come in contact the work piece or the element on which the work is done.
• This hand wheel is 2nd most important after the power supply.
74-14
Functions of all parts of machine:-
• Table transverse wheel and down feed wheel:-
• This table transverse wheel is used to adjust the place of the reciprocating table.
• The down feed wheel is used to feed the work piece to the grinding wheel so that the work piece omes in contact with the grinding wheel and the work is done.
74-15
Functions of all parts of machine:-
• Rotation of grinding wheel:-• This grinding wheel is used to remove the
unwanted particles on the job, it is also used to polish the job or to give a shining body as well as to give a desired shape.
• The grinding wheel is decided on its speed
74-16
Wheel Speed
• Majority operated most efficiently at 800 rotations per minute (rpm) to 1500 (rpm)
• Spindle speed varied for types and diameters of wheels used.– Speed varied by adjustment of pressure regulator
74-17
• Reciprocation of work-table:-• It is the place where the job(object) is placed
which is being grinded.• This table moves in reciprocating order on its
decided place.
74-18
Applications :-
• It is generally used for grinding the metals with a small width.
• It is used in the industries with medium scale of manufacture.
• It is used at the industries which are polishing the auto-parts as well as this grinding machines are used at the productions of taps, aluminnium shops, etc,.
74-19
Applications :-
• It is also used at the industries for cleaning as well as polishing the surface according to our needs.
74-21
Advantages of this grinder
a) As this grinder is rotating in a horizontal direction a work piece can be easily holded by hands and the job can be done.
b) Due to its horizontal rotary motion the surface area of the grinding wheel is less so the minimum error can be corrected.
74-22
Disadvantages of this grinder
a) This grinder is less efficient as the area of contraction is very less due to its horizontal motion of the wheels.
b) This grinder is not used at a large extanct with respect to that of vertical grinder.
