Healthline Celebrates 20 Years

www.evergreenhealth.comcontinued on back page

Many people wouldn’t dream of calling their doctor in the middle of the night; instead, they try to go it alone, alternating between “I’ll wait until morning” and “It’s time to call 9-1-1.”

Fortunately, a registered nurse at EvergreenHealth’s Healthline is ready to take your call any time of night or day, seven days a week, to help you decide whether to treat at home or seek professional care. The number is 425.899.3000.

Healthline is EvergreenHealth’s 24-hour call center, from which staff members provide health information, offer physician referrals, and arrange class registration. Healthline nurses, trained to give guidance over the telephone, use nationally recognized guidelines to help direct patients to the appropriate level of care based on their symptoms. The Healthline staff has answered 93,000 calls this year.

Sometimes, a little TLC is all that’s needed – “The nurse I spoke with helped calm my fears. She had a great bedside manner,” one patient says. At other times, Healthline nurses have a role in saving someone’s life:

“A woman called who had had recent surgery,” remembers Healthline Director Vickie Ravenscroft. “She was complaining of back pain and a cough. Our nurse advised her to visit the emergency department, and though she didn’t want to, our nurse was persistent. Later, the woman got in touch with us to say, ‘I went to the ED, where they found I had a pulmonary embolism, and I was hospitalized for three days. I’m home now ... alive!’”

Physician ReferralOur trained staff members help with another important aspect of health care: They provide community referrals to EvergreenHealth’s physician providers and specialists, identifying the provider that best fits each caller’s personal and medical needs.

Horizons promotes a healthy outlook beyond age 55.

“It is an extremely great comfort to be able to call the nurses when things go wrong at 3 a.m.” – Healthline caller

continued from page 1

Class RegistrationEach year, EvergreenHealth offers hundreds of health education classes such as those listed in this publication. Healthline registers participants for many of these classes. (Please see individual class listing for registration information.)

Healthline turns 20 this year, celebrating 20 years of serving our community one caller at a time. The nurses love their work, and they have the satisfaction of knowing they’re helping people every day of the year.

One grateful caller sums it up by saying, “I’m delighted you’re there. It makes the dark hours of the night safe again, to know a real, caring, knowledgeable person is there when events are beyond my expertise.”

Thank you, Healthline. And happy birthday.

Cindy Wootton, RNHealthline nurse
