Racing News Strait Of Dover Dead Canyon Farms’ homebred Strait of Dover, winner of the $1 million Queen’s Plate passed away on July 14th. He won ‘The Plate’, Canada’s most famous horse race, in record time of 2:01.4Strait of Dover began his career at Hastings as a 2-year-old but finished sixth and fifth in his only two starts here.A BC Bred son of English Channel-Bahrain Star, was the first Plate win for owner-breeder Canyon Farms (Wally and Terry Leong), who had one previous Plate starter, Illusive Force in 2003.“It is with much sadness and heavy heart,” wrote Leong. “that STRAIT OF DOVER was eutha-nized this evening at Milton Equine Hospital in Toronto. He had an operation for a twisted large colon (540 degrees) on July 11th. The surgery initially appeared hopeful but turned for the worse the last two days. grunting. He was trying so hard.” Golden Itiz, with

Gerry Olguin riding at 118, finished well to take third. Great Canadian Gaming Corpora-tion Announces Appointment of Raj Mutti, Executive Director of Hard Rock Casino Van-couver Peter Goudron, Senior

Vice President, Opera-tions - West, Great Canadian Gaming Corporation, is pleased to announce the ap-pointment of Raj Mutti as Executive Director of the new Hard Rock Casino Vancouver. The Hard Rock Casino Vancouver is set to open this winter, debut-ing as the first of its kind in Canada, and will be a rebranding and renovation of the Boulevard Casino in Coquitlam, B.C. As the Executive

Director of the Hard Rock Casino Vancou-ver, Mutti will directly oversee operations and future development of the property. “We have a highly

engaged team at our Boulevard Casino that is committed to the very significant trans-formation required to implement the new Hard Rock Casino brand. It’s a tremen-dous undertaking - much more than a simple renovation - and Raj will play a pivotal role with our current team to ensure the success of this transfor-mation,” Goudron stated. Mutti leaves Great

Canadian’s Hastings Racecourse & Slots property following a 15-year career that resulted in him being recognized as one of the young-est and most successful general managers of any major racetrack in North America. Owned by Great Canadian Gam-ing Corporation, Hastings Racecourse & Slots employs 450 full-time, part-time and seasonal staff. “Despite the contin-

ued systemic challeng-es associated with the horse racing industry in North America, Raj and his management team have had a positive impact on the repositioning of Hast-ings Racecourse in the marketplace as an entertainment-based destination over the last several years. He has left an enduring legacy; one that allows for Great Canadian, the Hastings’ management team, and the horse racing community to continue that work moving forward,” Gou-dron stated. “I am grateful to have

had the opportunity to contribute to the BC horse racing industry, and I now look forward

to bringing the new Hard Rock Casino Vancouver to the regional marketplace and making the casino an iconic entertainment destination,” Mutti said. “Although this was a mutual decision between myself and the company, it will be difficult leaving my wonderful team at Hastings Racecourse and all the dedicated members of the horse racing community. They have become like family to me over the years.” At Hastings, Darren

MacDonald has been appointed Interim General Manager and will be responsible for all operations at the property where the recruitment process for the permanent role has already commenced. At Fraser Downs

Racetrack & Casino, General Manager Ken Stratton will take on full responsibility for standardbred racing overseeing all opera-tions at that property.

Morning-line favorite Broadway Empire will break from post 11 in Saturday’s Grade 3, $200,000 Canadian Derby at Northlands Park. Post positions were chosen by repre-sentatives of the 12 horses that entered the 1 3/8th mile race for 3-year-olds at a brunch held Wednesday morning at Northlands.Trainer Robertino

Diodoro was disap-pointed when he had the last choice with Broadway Empire.“I wanted him closer

to the rail, where he could settle in behind horses, but you have to play the hand you’re dealt with,” Diodoro said.Broadway Empire is

coming off a dominat-ing win in the $50,000 Ky Alta Handicap, and he will need to control his substantial speed in

order to carry it around four turns.Diodoro was pleased

when owner Rick Wiest chose post 9 for Smart Promotion, who is undefeated in three starts for Diodoro. Smart Promotion forced an honest pace before drawing off to win the $50,000 Count Lathum Stakes at 1 1/16 miles at North-lands on July 27.The connections of

longshot Two to Load had first choice, and they chose post 4. Two to Load, trained by Wally Pugh, is ship-ping in from Evange-line Downs.Reporting Star, second

to Verrazano in the Grade 3 Pegasus Stakes at Monmouth Park, will break from post 3. Trainer Craig MacPherson was happy with the way Reporting Star arrived

from Toronto early Wednesday morning. He was on the same

plane as Title Contend-er, who is coming off a win in the Grade 3 Ohio Derby. Title Contender, trained by Anita Bolton, had second choice of posts, but there were no representatives at the draw so the horse was given post 12.Trainer Dino Condile-

nios said he wanted Shooting Jacket as close to the rail as possible, and he was pleased when post 1 was still available when he made his choice by phone from Vancouver. Shooting Jacket is coming off a win in the $50,000 Chris Loseth Handicap at Hastings on July 1.
