The Family Sunshine Center Foundation continues support for the financial operations of theFSC. The assets are used as needed for construction projects and development.

Our asset mix between stocks and bonds served us well over the last year given theimprovement in the stock market. At the end of the fiscal year, the assets of the foundationtotal $1.64 million and are divided 44% equity and 56% fixed income and cash. Our capitalgains and dividends are reinvested at the same mix by the board and investment advisorWachovia Bank. Together, we routinely review the investment strategy.

The foundation’s endowment will continue to ensure financial support to the FSC. Weappreciate the ongoing support from the community.

Sincerely,

Louis C. Cardinal, IIIPresidentFamily Sunshine Center Foundation Board

A Message from the President of the Board of DirectorsGreetings,

During the current fiscal year, we have witnessed a series of highs, lows and transitions—sounds alot like life, doesn’t it—but were very gratified in the end that we never allowed ourselves tospend too much time in the valleys because we were too busy striving to reach the peaks.

For example, although few families, businesses or communities were untouched by the ailingeconomic climate, the Family Sunshine Center considered its receiptof federal stimulus monies a bridge over troubled water. In addition,at a time when many non-profit agencies were experiencing decliningrevenues through local fundraising efforts, thanks to the hard work ofthe Family Sunshine Center board and staff and the continuingsacrificial giving of those who believe in our mission, our majorfundraising events were more successful than ever. And, we are verypleased to report we ended our fiscal year in the black!

The transition of sexual assault counseling services to the FamilySunshine Center went very well, and the agency is applying for statefunds to provide sexual assault prevention education in Montgomeryarea schools and the community.

Other opportunities for outreach and education grew out of tragic ornear tragic events. In April 2010, a small child was nearly abducted from a parking lot at a churchin west Montgomery County, which yielded many calls from schools, churches and child carecenters for prevention educators to teach personal safety techniques to hundreds of childrenthroughout the River Region. About the same time, a surge in domestic violence homicidesreported in Montgomery and adjacent counties prompted the FSC and the Montgomery CountyTask Force on Domestic Violence to pull together leaders of media and other communicationsoutlets throughout the region for a media round table, which resulted in a domestic violence call-in show on WSFA-TV and the promise of a week-long series on domestic violence in theMontgomery Advertiser during October 2010 among other things.

We were also very pleased to join a host of other agencies in several candidates’ forums, whichnot only allow the public to discern candidates’ views on crimes against women and children, butalso help educate the candidates about these issues.

The FSC also began working with a local agency on a rebranding effort, developing a new websiteand logo more inclusive of the full scope of services provided by the FSC.

And, finally, as the fiscal year wound down, spirits were soaring as 21 social service agencies, localgovernments and the community as a whole worked actively and strategically to open One PlaceFamily Justice Center, the first family justice center in the state, in Montgomery by the end ofOctober.

To all of the dedicated board members, staff, volunteers and donors, I personally thank you forthe hard work, innovative thinking and special gifts you brought to the FSC this year, and wish youGodspeed for the year ahead.

Grace and Peace,

Barry PrimPresident Board of Directors, 2009-2010

A Message from the Executive DirectorDear Gentle Reader,

As we get ready to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Family Sunshine Center andhave been busy “spiffing up” for the event, I just had a conversation with one of thewomen in shelter that reminds me so poignantly of why we are still here.

It is inauguration day for our new governor and a helicopterhas been flying in the sky since early morning. I told her that Ihad seen that Governor Bentley was scheduled to be atRiverwalk Stadium meeting Alabamians. “Becky” said she reallydid not know about the new governor or anything, that for thepast 10 years “he has kept me away from everything. I did seesomething on the news about it today when I went to get amammogram so I know a little bit.”

She went on to share with me that she has been in the shelterfor three weeks and that “this place has been such a blessingto me. I am finally in a good place”. She said when she came toshelter that she had been so badly beaten she could not walkor even see. “He and his Dad had dug my grave and werebanging me against a tree.” I did not ask how she escaped, but she said her life isdifferent now. She has glasses and can see. She can read a newspaper or watchtelevision. She can say her opinion about something and does not have to stay quiet. She told me more about her years of abuse as a child and adult, but I am sure you havegotten the picture by now that she has spent more years being hurt than being safe andwithout pain.

Some of these freedoms are so basic for most of us that we take them for granted: theright to have a pair of glasses so we can see a newspaper or read a book; the right towatch any television channel we choose; the right to say an opinion or to speak at all.Often, when I think of what the Family Sunshine Center does for family violence victimsI think of freeing them from pain, danger, chaos and “drama”. I rarely think that forsome women, what they appreciate most is the opportunity to read a newspaper orhave an opinion that they can speak.

Every year we serve thousands of women and children (and men too). Over the last 30years we have saved many lives by providing a safehaven for those in flight. But, as “Becky” soeloquently reminded me, what they value the mostis being able to see.

Karen SellersExecutive Director

Against All OddsIn the midst of continued despairing economic news and grey clouds over the world ofphilanthropy the advocates of the Family Sunshine Center proved all the naysayerswrong. We are overwhelmed by your generosity and grateful for the generous andsometimes sacrificial gifts you offer to support the people who seek our assistance. Wewould not be able to serve without you!

By the end of the fiscal year we finished in the black for our budget of $2,232,689.Meanwhile we are supported by our well managed foundation. In the bottom line, numbers always count the most. However, may we never forget the heart and passionthat make the bottom line a reality. There are countless people and organizationsthroughout our 30 year history that have led in policies and programs and contributedtheir time, talent and treasures in every imaginable form…all of which together formthe Family Sunshine Center mission. Thousands of lives have been rescued and savedbecause of the conscience of others. The tribute to our constituents is ever present.

Thank you!
