Maths is a key skill which children need to acquire for use in their everyday lives. Daily experiences in the setting are full of problem solving opportunities and numbers. Children have a natural curiosity to resolve diffculties, use numbers and fnd out about them. Developing counting skills is something we do all the time, but it’s not just about counting; it’s important to develop the concept of maths, through counting, sharing and positioning of shapes. We promote number through communication and language development such as using positional language when doing things, for example “your tower is big” “put your animals in the box”. As they grow they go on to organise and categorise objects and counting aids. Having mathematical resources as part of my continuous provision is so important. We encourage children to develop their counting skills by counting everyday objects in real life experiences. For example, counting how many children in the line? How many children are in school today? How many children are having a school lunch? Real life objects are placed in the maths area for children to use, for example during autumn months conkers and leaves maybe added, in winter baubles may be added and in summer shells. Children are also encouraged to show their counting using fngers for a visual aid. Number lines are placed around the classroom for visual aids.
